(The Rats Have Left the Ship)

by Paul T. Riddell
With the end of October comes a collision with truth for many people. For high school students, this truth is that one can't depend upon being able to get out of school early on Fridays for pep rallies after football season ends.
For college students, it's the realization that many of the assignations made during the early days of the semester were ill-advised at best, and that they'll have to continue sleeping with that teaching assistant if they expect to pass the semester.
For those in the working world, it's that most magical time of the year, Layoff Season. Not many can explain why so many large companies decide to cleanse their payrolls of the rank and file so close to the holidays, but the surmisals are legion. The obvious answer is that for most companies, the fiscal year starts on October 1, but the logic behind that date being chosen to start a company's financial calendar is chicken-and-the-egg reasoning.
Others point out, with plenty of evidence, that stock prices jump whenever a company lays off thousands of employees, in the same way the value of a book jumps when its author commits suicide. Still others suggest that American business is so constructed that a manager cannot beat his/her children at Christmas and threaten to return their presents, but abusing the employees is perfectly acceptable.

The Helmet
An excerpt from
The Official NFL Encyclopedia
By Beau Riffenburgh Jerseys and pants identify players. Helmets and pads protect them. The one event that more than any other was responsible for making these articles of protection necessary took place in 1888. The annual rules convention for the emerging sport of college football passed a rule permitting tackling below the waist. Football changed dramatically. Teams no longer arrayed themselves across the entire breadth of the field. Teams bunched themselves around the runner to block for him. The wedge and mass play arrived. Football became, for a time, a savage sport full of fights, brawling, even fatalities.
Grudgingly, football players accepted the wearing of protective equipment. Step-by-step, players braved being called sissies to wear pads of various types that in just a few years would be considered essential.
The article they accepted last of all was the helmet. The banal head harnesses and then the leather helmets that emerged were always disdained by a macho few. Even Glenn (pop) Warner counseled his Carlisle players against them in 1912. "Playing without helmets gives players more confidence, saves their heads from many hard jolts, and keeps their ears from becoming torn or sore," he said. "I do not encourage their use. I have never seen an accident to the head which was serious, but I have many times seen cases when hard bumps on the head so dazed the player receiving them that he lost his memory for a time and had to be removed from the game."

Chris Riddell and Paul Stewart
by Paul Stewart Corby Flood and her family are about to set sail on the rather ramshackle cruise ship, the S.S. Euphonia. Her boisterous brothers might not have noticed that anything is wrong, but Corby is highly observant and has a lot of time for note-taking and eavesdropping. Onboard, amongst all the odd passengers and eccentric crew, there is a strange group of men in bowler-hats who call themselves The Brotherhood of Clowns. There's also a melancholy wailing sound coming from the hold. It's strictly out of bounds but Corby can't help investigating. What could be inside the crate she discovers down in the hold? As the ship arrives at its destination, Corby must enlist the help of some very well moustachioed locals to uncover the contents of the crate and the dark secrets of the menacing Clowns. St.Mary's Ely , originally uploaded by markymarko One of the most important and revolutionary functions of the Bible is to remind people who they are. Over the droning voices of indoctrination which label human beings as peasants, serfs, beggars, outcasts, foreigners, slaves, inmates, patients, consumers or subjects, scripture asserts that in essence, people are the children of God. There is the ringing affirmation which the apostle Peter writes to a bunch of slaves. 'Once you were not a people, but now you are God's people (1 Peter 2v10). Paul declares: 'for all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God' (Romans 8v14). The effect of these words is to provide an unshakeable sense of belonging and inalienable dignity.
