SF Site's film columnist has an undying love of midnight shows in movie theatres. In this column, he gives us some history, some anecdotes and some reasons why it is a thing of the past. From The Rocky Horror Picture Show to the unlamented Shock Treatment , we get a peek at why they lasted awhile, what caused their demise and where to seek out alternatives for home viewing.

No hover cars, no manned Mars bases, no learning pills. Not that we needed most of these (although learning pills, properly applied, might guarantee that more frat boys leave school with something besides a blasted liver and a police record for date rape), but it's the principle of the thing that's at issue. Most of all, we still haven't made contact with extraterrestrials, and we should be glad of this.

Paul Riddell Revisited: Placing "SFWA Member" on Your Cover Letter
Will It Help Sell Your Story?
(Top SF Editors Reveal Their Views About This Misunderstood Belief)
by James Van Pelt
Why should I care that Paul Riddell said in his Fall Tangent column, "I'm willing to bet that other editors feel the same way I do: with very few exceptions, seeing the letterhead that lists SFWA and HWA is a screaming neon sign saying 'crappy story enclosed; please flush at first opportunity'"? After all, as several editors and writers I talked to pointed out, the statement is clearly hyperbole and shouldn't be taken at face value. Riddell went on to say, "My main beef concerns the SFWA members who put their membership on the letterhead, as in 'Joe Blow, SFWA Member.' When I started accepting manuscripts for the Genetech anthology a year ago, I quickly learned to look at the cover letter; with maybe one exception, every submission that made a big gardyloo about SFWA on its masthead was a complete and utter dog." He says that he plans on addressing in more detail in a future column in Tangent his feelings about SFWA.

Join Date: Apr 2003 Location: Florida Posts: 3,628 The Edge Chronicles, Paul Stewart and Chris Riddell This is a YA series that fell into my lap by chance and the books were so pretty I just had to read them. It is a fantasy story about a boy named Twig who goes on a journey because he doesn't fit in. The books are nicely bound with beautiful black and white ilustrations that truly give the reader a vision of this unique little world.
Twig, while having grown up with the Trolls knows he doesn't fit in and finds out for sure when his Mother tells him he must leave. In order to do so he must make a scary journey through the Deepwoods on his own. His adventures begin in earnest when he forgets his mother's admonishment 'Don't ever stray off of the path!'. He finds out that while some other classes of people may look different and even sleep different but they all are similar in some ways. Twig has to survive an accidental flight tethered to a boy who has been poisoned with a substance that makes him fill with hot air. He then narrowly escapes being eaten by a Bloodwood tree, being destroyed by a newly made Termagent, finds and loses his real father, and later witnesses the hatching of a Caterbird and makes friends with a formidable banderbear.

[My paper] Julia C Piasecki Karen Beagles Brian C Beard Stanley Riddell ... Hans-Peter Kiem In previous studies we showed that low-dose irradiation and immunosuppression with cyclosporine and mycophenolate mofetil prolonged in vivo persistence of gene-modified T cells but was unable to induce tolerance. We hypothesized that the lack of sustained antigen presentation because of the limited life span of the infused T cells might be responsible for the lack of tolerance induction. Thus, we examined whether tolerance could be induced by infusion of long-lived stem cells. Two baboons were transplanted with YFP/neo-transduced CD34(+) cells. The transgene-marked cells disappeared completely within 5 weeks and CD8(+) transgene-specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes were detected in both animals. Thus, this nonablative conditioning regimen did not provide sufficient immunosuppression for the induction of tolerance after infusion of gene-modified CD34(+) cells.

MUDDLE EARTH
by Paul Stewart and Chris Riddell
Delacorte Books for Young Readers
ISBN: 9780385733168
Ages 9-12 464 pages Poor Joe Jefferson. He has a noisy family, not enough time and an assignment to write an essay on "My Amazing Adventure." Given his boring life, he's not even sure what to write about - but soon he'll have enough adventures to fill a whole book, not just a term paper. Joe is about to be whisked away to the land of Muddle Earth by Randalf, a truly inept wizard who knows exactly one spell. Randalf and his sidekicks - the ogre known as Norbert the Not-Very-Big and the bird named Veronica - have summoned Joe (and his own sidekick, his dog Harry) to Muddle Earth in order to save the kingdom from the horrid ogre known as Engelbert the Enormous. Joe is a reluctant warrior at best, and despite his new name of Joe the Barbarian, all he really wants is to fulfill his duties and get back home again. Before Joe can even approach the fearsome Engelbert, however, he has to be outfitted with the appropriate warrior garb: the Woolly Gloves of Determination, the Wellies of Power, the War-bonnet of Sarcasm and the Trident of Trickery (which, given Randalf's pitiful budget, are actually old gloves and boots, a saucepan and a toasting-fork). Nevertheless, despite his apprehension, Joe turns out to be a most capable hero, even when confronted not only with fearsome ogres and trolls but even by dragons, rogue cutlery and the fiercest villain of all - Doctor Cuddles of Giggle Glade, who vows to become Lord and Master of Muddle Earth. But will Randalf, whose only spell involves bringing questionable heroes to Muddle Earth, be able to return Joe to the place he wants to be most of all - home?

Paul and Chris collaborate on the very successful Edge Chronicles which Paul writes and Chris illustrates. They were in Christchurch to promote the ninth and penultimate installment in the trilogy of trilogies (+1).
How collaborative is the process?
What came first - the map, the characters, the illustrations?
Did you deliberately choose to have male protagonists - Twig, Rook, Quint? The Edge characters are not necessarily black or white - you get the feeling that life on the Edge is a matter of looking out for yourself because no-one else is going to, that moral imperatives are driven more by circumstance than character?  Comment?

Paul is often the one that adds the darkness and seriousness into the stories whereas Chris tends to be lighter.
The image of Sanctaphrax very compelling - city on a stone on a chain floating in the sky.  And the buoyant stones and wood, stormphrax and the great storms - are all turning assumptions about matter around to create new world and environment - how carefully did you have to think it all through? - create some new natural laws? Paul - you seem to have issues with parents - you have missing fathers, orphans, abandoned children - is this just a device to give some freedom of movement or motivation to your heroes?
