And he in turn created an imaginary neighborhood about one block over from the real one. Richler lived and breathed these streets even after he left them. He remembered them, savoured their sights and sounds and smells, and then described them in his writings over a period of some fifty years. Mordecai Richler Was Here features selections from Richler's most memorable writing — both fiction and nonfiction — along with family photographs, archival images, and witty illustrations by political cartoonist Aislin. It also offers readers an intimate look at the street that shaped — and was shaped by — one of Canada's greatest writers. As Richler himself said, "I do feel forever rooted in Montreal's St. Urbain Street. That was my time, my place, and I have elected myself to get it right." He certainly did, as this lively collection of writings attests.
MORDECAI RICHLER was one of the world’s great novelists, essayists and humorists. Richler died in Montreal in July 2001.

Richler was one of Canada's most respected writers
By Mike Fox in Montreal The Canadian author and journalist Mordecai Richler has died at the age of 70. He wrote many best-selling novels, including The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz, but he also played a significant and controversial role in the debates over whether Quebec should separate from the rest of Canada. Mordecai Richler had been struggling against cancer for some time. In 1998 he lost a kidney, and last week it was announced that he was undergoing chemotherapy for the second time in three years, with the cancer apparently having spread to his other kidney. Prize winning He was one of Canada's most respected novelists of the modern era, but he only gained his literary reputation after emigrating to London as a young man. His books paint a vivid picture of life as a Jew in Montreal, in the days when they suffered considerable prejudice. He won several Canadian awards for his books, and was twice listed for the prestigious Booker Prize.

From the publisher:
St. Urbain s Horseman is a complex, moving, and wonderfully comic evocation of a generation consumed with guilt – guilt at not joining every battle, at not healing every wound. Thirty-seven-year-old Jake Hersh is a film director of modest success, a faithful husband, and a man in disgrace. His alter ego is his cousin Joey, a legend in their childhood neighbourhood in Montreal. Nazi-hunter, adventurer, and hero of the Spanish Civil War, Joey is the avenging horseman of Jake’s impotent dreams. When Jake becomes embroiled in a scandalous trial in London, England, he puts his own unadventurous life on trial as well, finding it desperately wanting as he steadfastly longs for the Horseman’s glorious return. Irreverent, deeply felt, as scathing in its critique of social mores as it is uproariously funny, St. Urbain

Intrigued by Richler's defiant denial that his personal history plays any part in his fiction, we unveil the life-altering events he semi-discloses. Amazed at his brazen plundering of past and present literary works, we watch as he reworks the stories and poems of other writers, for purposes of his own.
