"Canadian Conundrums" Mr. Mordecai Richler
Stanley Knowles Visiting Professor in Canadian Studies
The Stanley Knowles Lecture
University of Waterloo
March 23, 1999

La Condition Humaine in its English translation its title, Man's Fate . The novel was based on the Shanghai insurrection of 1927. The communist Reds take over the city and a dubious alliance with Chiang Kai-shek's Blues, who then turned against them and re-take the city. In the last pages of the novel, Malraux's protagonist, a European revolutionary, is among a group captured by Chiang Kai-shek's men. They're fed alive, one by one, into the funnel of a coal-fired train engine. In a final act of heroism Malraux's protagonist surrenders his only cyanide pill to a young comrade. Lying awake in bed in Montreal, born too late to have served in the Second World War, I hoped that one day I would be capable of making just such a sacrifice or perhaps something more modest in the name of a noble cause. Instead, well into my sixties, I found myself embroiled in, let's face it, Canada's longest running opera bouffe . A far from life and death struggle, over the size English lettering and outdoor commercial signs in Montreal. I manned the barricades, so to speak, for the legal right to munch unilingually labelled kosher matzah's in Quebec for more than sixty days a year. I also protested the right of a pet shop parrot to be unilingually English. As a consequence, nice people still stop me on the street and thank me for taking a stand. It's embarrassing, for my stand, such as it is, hardly qualifies me as a latter day Spartacus or Tom Paine or Rosa Luxemburg.

His life becomes consumed with unravelling the secrets from the startling, almost mythical life of a man and family shrouded in lies. Ranging from the underworld of nineteenth-century London, through the Franklin expedition to the Arctic, to the Prohibition years on the prairies and the Eastern Townships of Quebec, Solomon Gursky Was Here is a grand, uncommonly rich tale from one of Canada's best storytellers. • Mordecai Richler 1931-2001
Canadian novelist, essayist, critic, screenwriter, short story writer, editor, memoirist, and children's writer. The following entry presents an overview of Richler's career through 2002. For further information on his life and works, see CLC, Volumes 3, 5, 9, 13, 18, 46, and 70.
    INTRODUCTION
One of the most prominent figures in contemporary Canadian literature, Richler was best known for his darkly humorous novels in which he examines such diverse topics as Canadian society, Jewish culture, Quebec nationalism, the adverse effects of materialism, and relationships between individuals from different socio-economic backgrounds. A skilled and unrelenting satirist, Richler left Canada at the age of twenty, living as an expatriate in Europe for more than twenty years. However, a large majority of his fiction is set within the Jewish section of Montreal where he was raised, exploring the characteristics that define Jewish and Canadian self-identity. The typical Richler protagonist is an alienated, morally disillusioned individual who finds stability and inner-knowledge difficult to attain. Though known primarily for his novels, in his later years, Richler's critical works attracted considerable attention—his essay collection

    > Mordecai Richler died on July 3, and within minutes of the announcement there was a stampede from the grand panjandrums of "CanLit" to conscript him posthumously into the ranks of "Canadian novelists." Mordecai was a novelist who happened to be Canadian, which isn't quite the same thing, and he spent much of his life making gleeful digs about all the great writers who were, as he put it, "world famous in Canada." Richler, by contrast, was world famous in, among other places, Italy, where his last novel, Barney's Version, is a bestseller in its seventh ...
