When Mordecai Richler left Canada for Paris, he was a brooding young intellectual with lots to say. He returned a prolific, respected writer with a keen eye for the absurd and the magnetism to charm or anger just about all of his contemporaries. MORDECAI RICHLER
Place of birth : Montreal, Quebec
Place of residence : Montreal, Quebec A prominent author, scriptwriter, and essayist, Mordecai Richler was persuaded by his children, Daniel, Emma, Noah, Martha, and Jacob, to write something for them. The result was Jacob Two-Two Meets the Hooded Fang . Started as a bedtime tale for his youngest son, it went on to win two major children's book prizes in 1976. It has been translated into French, Finnish, German and Dutch, recorded, filmed, read on the radio, and adapted as a musical. Jacob Two-Two's adventures continue in two other stories, the most recent, Jacob Two-Two's First Spy Case , winning one of the prestigious 1995 Mr. Christie's Book Awards. Mordecai Richler grew up in Montreal, attended Sir George Williams University, and then lived and wrote in England for many years. Homesick for "blizzards, hockey, smoked-meat sandwiches" and "the mountain lakes of his boyhood", he returned to Canada in 1972, dividing his time between Montreal and Quebec's Eastern Townships.

ONE OF CANADA S MOST OUTSPOKEN WRITERS, Mordecai Richler is probably the best-known author Montreal has ever spawned. Caustic, controversial and often crude, he shares with the title character of his novel, Solomon Gursky Was Here , an unquenchable itch to meddle and provoke. But Richler's acerbic and scatological inventiveness is fired by a secular moralism that is less obvious, though no less important, to an appreciation of his work than is his gleeful obscenity. "In a time when there really is no agreement on values," he once observed to Tom Harpur, the religion columnist of the Toronto Star , "and a collapse of religious values, which certainly created a certain order, or standard, you are obliged to work out your own code of honour and system of beliefs and to lead as honourable a life as possible." For Richler, "the honourable life" appears to have meant being a devoted husband and loving father to his family of five grown children (his oldest son, Daniel, a child of his wife's first marriage, is also a novelist and television arts critic) and of writing precisely as he pleases. Stupidity, hypocrisy, pretentiousness and greed have always been the cardinal sins in his canon, targets of the savage wit that is as acidic and uproarious today as it was when he began to write nearly forty years ago. Raised in an orthodox Jewish setting in the ghetto of Montreal during the Depression ("where you could take in three movies for a quarter, but sometimes felt gray squishy things nibbling at your ankles"), on his mother's side the grandson of a scholarly rabbi, since the publication of his first novel in 1954 Richler has grappled with the same themes: "Man without God. Man embarrassed. Stripped. There is a current chaos in the world, and we no longer know what is right or wrong."

    SOLOMON GURSKY WAS HERE
    By Mordecai Richler.
413 pp. New York: Alfred A. Knopf. $19.95. The menacing black raven that swoops in and out of Mordecai Richler's inventive new novel is the familiar and totem of one Ephraim Gursky (1817-1910): Jewish-Eskimo shaman, Minsk cantor, London (c. 1830) pickpocket, Newgate prisoner, bogus millenarian preacher and Klondike roustabout. Popping up all over the globe, working dozens of shadowy scams, Ephraim represents only the first of the generations of Gurskys whose convoluted, endearingly manic saga propels ''Solomon Gursky Was Here.'' Gursky darkness. The crooked line that Moses - and the novel - traces is the path of dynastic succession as wisdom, wealth and power zigzag down through the Gursky family tree. So the multitalented Ephraim recognizes, as his spiritual heir, his adventurous grandson Solomon. Together with his brothers, Morrie and Bernard, Solomon founds the lucrative liquor business that is inherited (or usurped) mostly by Bernard after Solomon disappears - apparently dying in what may (or may not) be an accidental plane crash.

CP He might be a grumpy old man on the subject of Quebec nationalism, but when Mordecai Richler's subject is fiction, there's no funnier Canadian. That was the conclusion at the 1998 Stephen Leacock Award for Humour luncheon yesterday, when it was announced that Richler was the winner for his book Barney's Version (Knopf, $32.95). Richler was not present but Knopf representative Dianne Martin, who accepted the award on his behalf, suggested that despite his celebrated grumpiness, the Montreal-based writer becomes more appealing as time goes on. "The older and more curmudgeonly he gets, the cuter he gets. I think this is what's happening to Mordecai." Humourist Dave Broadfoot said he, too, was often puzzled by the Richler dichotomy.

    St. Urbain's Horseman rides again
Mordecai Richler's classic novel is being made into a miniseries for CBC. It took a while to get a script just right, and David Julian Hirsh, who will play Jake, can hardly wait
    BRENDAN KELLY, The Gazette
Monday, September 11, 2006 St. Urbain's Horseman, the book many consider to be Mordecai Richler's masterpiece, is finally going to be adapted for the small screen. After years in development at Montreal-based Galafilm, the cameras start rolling this week in Montreal on a $7.4-million, four-hour miniseries based on the 1971 Governor General's Award-winning novel. It will air on CBC sometime during the 2007-2008 season. Ian Whitehead, who is producing St. Urbain's Horseman, said the project has taken a long time for one simple reason: The producers had a tough time coming up with a screenplay that does justice to the rich, complex novel chronicling the trials and tribulations of an expatriate Canadian TV director living in London, England. "This was particularly hard to crack at the script level," Whitehead said in a phone interview from the St. Urbain's Horseman production offices late last week. "The first adaptation was quite close to the book, with the jumping back and forth in time, and it was just really messy. So getting it right took a long time."
