BOOK: Hockey Dreams by David Adams Richards
Hockey Dreams by David Adams Richards
Memories of a Man Who Couldn't Play New Brunswick book for the Canadian Book Challenge When I started this book, all about Canada and hockey, while a good choice obviously for the Canadian Book Challenge, I wasn't sure how much it would be about New Brunswick. I am hoping that most of the books that I read by province evoke a sense of the province as well as a good story. This book is actually several books in one: history and role of hockey over the last fifty years, how Canadians identify with hockey, and finally, the author's memories growing up on the Miramichi River, playing hockey. It certainly gave me a feel for growing up in the Miramichi. This was a touching and patriotic read. I may have to get this for my husband for Christmas - he grew up in a small village, playing hockey on natural ice, and Richards' stories of playing hockey as a youngster remind me somewhat of my husband and his brother's stories. Richards recalls that during talk of expansion in the sixties, he assumed that Newcastle would be a logical spot for a new franchise. When he was young, my husband thought his father's old-timer league was the step below the NHL. So I could definitely identify with most of what Richards wrote; I think many Canadians could. There are reminisces of a lot of international hockey, of course including Henderson's goal and the 1972 series with the Russians. I certainly haven't thought so much about the Canadian identity and hockey as in depth as he has, but I know that there are others who also have looked into it. I would love to read a Richards' article after the Salt Lake City Olympics, when we finally iced the best hockey players in the world, male and female. He must have been over the moon. The Friends of Meager Fortune by David Adams Richards
The power of words can kill a man - and so can greed. By Angela Wilson Books But no matter what Mary or anyone else tries, fate is determined to fulfill the prophecy. Owen is torn between his desire for this woman and his loyalty to Reggie. He is tired of the work and his war wound is hurting desperately in the cold and harsh landscape of the Canadian wilderness. The town buzzes with gossip that the two are sleeping together, but they are never inappropriate. Camelia is an innocent eventually ravaged by the malicious rumors in a Salem Witch Trial fashion; she is never the same.
Those who enjoy literary reads will likely eat up every word, and while Friends is a good book, it is not great for the average reader. Movement is incredibly slow until the middle of the book, when it takes off to the frequently foreshadowed end. Even after the middle, the scenes sometimes drag before readers get to the heart of what is happening. www.davidadamsrichards.com

Onyx reviews: The Friends of Meager Fortune by David Adams Richards
Many authors establish a geographic niche, a part of the world that is theirs (and often theirs alone) to explore and reveal. For David Adams Richards, it's the rural Miramichi region of New Brunswick in Eastern Canada. In every sense, it is a small community, known primarily for salmon and trout fishing, and for its forestry industry. As a former native of the area, Richards understands the soul of the people. He gets inside their skin and puts on their vernacular and concerns without effort. The title of his latest novel sounds dire and pessimistic: The Friends of Meager Fortune The Jameson family is one of three lumber dynasties in the area at a time when the old ways are dying. Each winter, foresters hew trees the girth of three men with saws and axes, transport the logs to tributaries by horse and sledge, and ride the booms down the river to the mill when the ice melts in the spring. Within a decade, chainsaws and trucks will transform their arduous lives and many of them will not survive the change. The impending arrival of unions is just one of many rumors of change in a book where rumors shape reality.

39. THE BAY OF LOVE AND SORROWS BY DAVID ADAMS RICHARDS
Learn More About david adams richards The Bay of Love Sorrows by david adams richards originally appeared 10 October 1998 in The Toronto Star.
http://www.judithfitzgerald.ca/davidadamsrichards.html
Imagine a flimsy dinghy tossed upon a Stygian river of rough love, cheap sex, and violent death in some New-Brunswick back-of-beyond and you begin to appreciate the cruel and carnal currents David Adams Richards navigates in The Bay of Love and Sorrows
It's the latest instalment in the critically lauded Maritimer's grit-and-gristle series that includes, among its brighter offerings, Blood Ties Lives of Short Duration Hope in the Desperate Hour , and 1988's Governor-General's Award-winning Nights Below Station Street
The Bay of Love and Sorrows
revisits the shacks and homes scattered along the all-important road which, according to the omniscient yet mumpish narrator, "had become a very different place in just four months . . . The road, with the river that ran beyond it . . . had suddenly become less idyllic."
Because she feels it "proper for proper girls to wait," Karrie Smith, the only daughter of Dora and Emmett who own "the gas bar just above Oyster River," pursues Tom Donnerel until he catches her. When the winsome hopeful returns from community college to begin her life on Tom's farm, she attempts to rebuild the friendship between her fiancé and Judge Skid's son, Michael. Inevitably, a situation develops. Inevitably, it involves a metaphoric parade of grotesque characters led down a crooked, capricious, and occasionally overgrown path by Everette Hutch with the sister-brother duo of the radiantly beautiful Madonna and clinically depressed Silver Brassaurd firmly in grip and tragically in tow.

David Williams To Jody Richards: Pound Sand
Senate President David Williams sent a letter to House Speaker Jody Richards refusing Richards' offer of a junket to St. Louis to talk to Peabody Energy:
I do not understand why you need to fly to St. Louis, unless you are trying to create cover for the House failing to act on this important measure when it unconstitutionally attempted to adjourn Sine Die and left town while the Senate remained and worked on this important incentive package.
Only your use of leadership to summon your members back to Frankfort to act on this bill, which has passed the Senate, will make you and the House relevant in accomplishing the important goal of developing Kentucky's coal assets and creating thousands of jobs.
These guys will put on their bipartisan hats again in January when it is time to spend your money and re-elect their members. But until November, this is what you get. Can't wait to see Richards' response.
