David Adams Richards What or how did you become an author? Well I read my first book when I was 14, never read very much until then, and it was when I was halfway through that book that I said, "this is what I'd like to do." Since I was 14 I knew what I wanted to be, and by the time I was 19 I never thought of being anything else but a writer. I wrote my first book when I was 21 and I had it published when I was 23. How many novels have you written to this time? Nine - nine novels, a hockey book and a book of short stories. What are your novels mainly about? About living in New Brunswick, the Maritimes and how the people deal with things in their lives. The problems they have, the happiness they have and the sorrows they have. How long have you been an author? Twenty-five years. What is the career of an author like? Is it a hard working job or easy? You have to be dedicated, you have to work every day. The best thing to do is write down something when you think of it. You are your own boss. No one tells you what to do so you have to discipline yourself. The best thing to do is to look upon it as just an ordinary job and to work every day. If you don't look upon it like that, you won't get your work done. So you have to discipline yourself. What is your favorite, or most successful novel, you have written?

Buy it online "The individual characters themselves decide. I mean, once the book gets started, the characters kind of take over. But it's an ongoing study of, well, of the human condition. But it's also a study of how to counteract violence against physical, emotional, economic and how people group among each other in certain senses to achieve power. And how that power can be so core, not only to themselves, but to other people." The day before I met with him, David Adams Richards' most recent book, Mercy Among the Children , had been nominated for the Giller Prize, one of Canada's most coveted literary awards. While clearly pleased and possibly chuffed by this turn of events, Richards is coy about the nomination. "We'll see what happens." Since then, the book has also been nominated for a Governor General's Award for fiction and has been reviewed to choruses of gushing from the generally reserved literati. At 50, Richards is one of Canada's most celebrated little known authors. Perhaps lacking the sex appeal that has followed the careers of some of his peers Margaret Atwood , for instance, or Michael Ondaatje (both of whom also had books nominated for the GG for fiction in 2000) Richards' work is almost always raved about by the critics and widely passed over by the book buying public, something that is inexplicable considering the near-orgasmic reviews his most recent works have received from even the toughest critics. For instance

Antigonish Review # 128
Tony Tremblay Answering the Critics: David Adams Richards and the Paradox of Unpopularity To go back to the letters and diaries of the time is to discover a very different reality from that which we have in the mythology of literary history or in the chit-chat of journalists." Louis Dudek 30 October 1996 In early 1990 a young woman from Ontario, newly minted with a PhD in Canadian literature from UBC, sets up a tape recorder in front of David Adams Richards. She might be in his kitchen in Saint John; they might be sitting in her office in Fredericton. She is a young academic from away; he is New Brunswick's best known writer of his generation, a talent as fierce as Buckler, MacLeod, and Nowlan. A talent uncompromising. (The key point to understand is that the interview takes place in New Brunswick - in his place. If anyone has legitimacy here, it should be he.) After the requisite questions and probes, all of which he is rehearsed in answering, she asks the

Written by David Adams Richards
Afterword by Alistair MacLeod Published by New Canadian Library
ABOUT THIS BOOK
The Terris are engaging people, but they are a family in collapse. Alcoholism, drugs, and loveless sex have reduced them to a petty and wasted bunch. Worse, they typify aspects of the larger community besieged by financial woes and by creeping economic and cultural Americanization.
What David Adams Richards accomplishes is no mean feat: his characters are at times vicious, sleazy, and even outright dim, yet he manages to entitle them to the interest and sympathy of the reader.
Even more now than at its first publication in 1981, Lives of Short Duration

Framed and Booked
We all become different readers in how we respond to books, why we need them, what we take from them. We become different in the questions that arise as we read, in the answers that we find, in the degree of satisfaction or unease we feel with those answers. . . In the hands of a different reader, the same story can be a different story. "The Opposite of Fate" by Amy Tan
