The Dragon and the Unicorn Kenneth Rexroth was born in 1905 in Indiana, into a family that had a long line of freethinkers, feminists, abolitionists, socialists and anarchists. His father used to drink whisky with Eugene Debs, the socialist leader. He had an enlightened upbringing but then had the misfortune of being orphaned at the age of 12. Most of his adolescence was spent in Chicago, where he worked as a newspaper reporter and was involved in running a jazz tea shop. Here he came in contact with the bohemian world of musicians, poets, writers, artists, hobos, revolutionaries and outsiders.

Kenneth Rexroth: Radical Poet for the Modern Era
Kenneth Rexroth determined early that he wanted a life of adventure and ground-breaking independence. He was born in South Bend, Indiana in 1905, but moved to Chicago with his aunt when his parents both died within two years. His father was an alcoholic. His mother was chronically depressed, so it is no surprise that he was a rebellious youth, expelled from high school, always the iconoclast. He briefly attended the Art Institute of Chicago, but he ran into trouble when he was arrested and jailed after they raided a speakeasy and brothel he regularly attended. It was later alleged that he was part owner of the brothel.
Left-wing politics captured his attention, and he traveled around the country giving soapboxes speeches in favor of the International Workers of the World, better known as the Wobblies, supporting himself by temporary bits of labor as a horse-wrangler, sheep-herder, and pamphlet salesman for constipation cures. He was briefly a postulant in a monastery near Poughkeepsie where he learned meditation and the value of silence. Soon he took his knapsack to Mexico, South America, and Europe. In Paris, he met leading Surrealists, camped in the wilderness and learned several languages.

Kenneth Rexroth on the student movement, 1960 "The Students Take Over" In talking about the Revolt of Youth we should never forget that we are dealing with a new concept. For thousands of years, nobody cared what youth were doing. They weren’t news. They weren’t minding. They aren’t minding now. That isn’t news. They haven’t been minding since the days of.... F. Scott Fitzgerald. In those days, they were cutting loose. In the thirties, they were joining up.... During the McCarthy Epoch and the Korean War, they were turning their backs and walking away. Today they are striking back. That is news. Nobody else is striking back. Kenneth Rexroth (1905-1982) lived many lives in the avant-garde of six decadesfirst in Chicago as a precocious actor, cubist painter, and soap-box poet of revolution after World War I, then on the west coast as a Wobbly in the Industrial Workers of the World, a cowboy-cook, and mountain-climbing naturalist committed to the protection of the planet long before ecology became a popular concern. Exploring Mexico, New York, Europe, and later Asia, he won international fame as a poet of vision and protest, an erudite and popular essayist, a translator from half a dozen languages, Asian and Western, and an original thinker whose anarcho-ecological-erotic-Buddhist-Christian worldview harmonized worldly and transcendental wisdom.
Rexroth was a contemplative activist, a lyricist of love and nature, a fierce satirist and preacher against injustice, a rowdy comedian and tragic playwright, an erudite sage and countercultural critic. He struggled for revolutionary hope and mourned its defeat in World War II and the Cold War. This tragic view of a worldwide collapse of values, along with a deeply religious sense of "total responsibility,” ennobled Rexroth's character at a time when most Americans uncritically, simplistically, and self-righteously supported first the "good war" against fascism and then the promotion of Capitalism against Communism. Long before the public woke up to the worldwide ecological crisis, Rexroth expected it to finish us all off eventually if a nuclear Apocalypse did not.

SOURCE: "Lyrical 'Rage,'" in The Saturday Review , Vol. XL, No. 45, November 9, 1957, p. 15. In this review, Rukeyser praises In Defense of the Earth.] The fineness of Kenneth Rexroth's In Defense of Earth depends on several virtues. They are virtues which are rare in this year but which are apparent in almost every one of the Rexroth poems: a lyric-mindedness that has been prepared by many disciplines to summon up its music; a learning that eats the gifts of the world, knowing (like the laboratory baby before the food) how many cultures must be drawn on to make human fare; and that quality which has been talked about so much in speaking of Kenneth Rexroth and of those he has known in San Francisco: rage. The poems included in the collection are the whole background of lyrics written by Kenneth Rexroth since 1949. Here is the exquisite "Great Canzon": … She, when she...

    Definition Press. By KENNETH REXROTH
Most of us who were there remember Eli Siegel as almost the sole survivor of the Golden Age of Greenwich Village. Sadakichi Hartman, Hippolyte Havel, Polly Halliday, Harry Kemp, Maxwell Bodenheim, John Rose Gildea, Little Joe Gould and all those wonderful girls who wrote poems about Italian truck drivers for Joe Kling's Pagan — they are all gone, if not into a world of light, at least gone from the Minettas, Macdougal Street and Hubert's Cafeteria. Eli is still there and comes up in this book with a lovely nostalgic poem to Sheridan Square, that Local Stop. Eli Siegel has had his audience down the years...whom he taught to write verse, and a few people motivated by intelligent taste rather than fashion. But these latter, including myself, have always looked on him as a kind of le douanier Rousseau of poetry, a deeper, and broader, and older, and wiser, and wittier Gregory Corso.
