Ruth Rendell is a British mystery and psychological suspense writer, often referred to as "the Queen of Crime." Rendell actually writes in three different voices, using two names: her popular, long-running mystery series featuring Chief Inspector Wexford of the Kingsmarkam police department is written under her own name of Ruth Rendell , as are her various stand-alone novels of psychological suspense that explore issues such as sexual obsession, miscommunication, domestic abuse and the status of women in contemporary society. She also writes even darker, issue-oriented psychological novels under the pseudonym of Barbara Vine . Both her Wexford mysteries and her darker psychological suspense feature elegant prose and insight into human thought processes. Her works are known for their tight, logical plots and strong characterizations. In a career of over 40 years, she is also well known for bringing important contemporary social issues to light in fictional settings. The following authors may appeal to you if you enjoy either of Rendell's writing styles. The author names in this list are hotlinked to their holdings in the library's catalog, so that you may check on the availability of their titles in print or audio formats.
