Many of her works have been adapted for television. Lake of Darkness (1980) won the Arts Council National Book Award (Genre Fiction) for that year. Tribute to Ruth Rendell
In 2004 Ruth Rendell was given the Gumshoe Award for Lifetime Achievement. "Rendell builds plots the way the Romans built bridges. They soar high because they are sunk deep, and cost a human life or two." Marilyn Stasio, New York Times In truth, it means all of these things and many more. To be described as Rendellesque is an accolade any writer would be proud of. To be compared to the one of the most respected you'd be hard pressed to find a crime writer who doesn't list Rendell as one of their favorites, one of their influences, from Ian Rankin to Patricia Cornwell to Sue Grafton crime novelist of this century or the last is very high praise indeed. "Ruth Rendell is not only the finest crime novelist there is, but one of the finest novelists writing in the English Language." Gerald Kaufman

Edinburgh Book Festival Review - Ruth Rendell in conversation with Ian Rankin
August 16, 2007 No other author in any genre can boast the type of reputation and world-wide recognition that Ruth Rendell can. She is perhaps the world’s best known crime writer, and at the sprightly age of 78, the Queen of Crime looks well below her years, and well up for the task of writing many more best sellers. If you don’t believe me, have a read of the following facts: Ruth Rendell has written over 60 novels, including several novellas, and collections of short stories. She has written various non-fiction books, a chapbook, and one anthology. Her novels have been translated into 25 different languages, and she is the recipient of countless awards, including several Crime Writers’ Association awards, Mystery Writers of America awards, a CBE, and was made a lifelong Peer of the Realm, now known by the official title; Dame Ruth Barbara Rendell, Baroness Rendell of Babergh. In short, she is a remarkable author, and a spectacular woman.

This four-part pilot, produced by John Davies and adapted by Clive Exton , set the template for all subsequent Wexford adaptations that has remained largely unchanged. The main exception is the music: Marc Wilkinson wrote the somewhat heavy-handed score for the pilot, while

(35 previous messages) Amazonchic - 02:36pm May 3, 2000 PST(# of 42) Please disregard my post above. We discussed the solution today in class. I wasn't the only one who had trouble recognizing the killer. I was very disappointed at the ending of "Keys to the Street" It seemed like she just got sick of writing and decided to chop it off. There seemed to be a lot that wasn't cleared up. Especially in regards to the murderer. I loved the book, up until the last chapter. The ending could have been a lot better than it was. It's a shame that it wasn't. Marie Javet - 01:08pm Oct 23, 2000 PST(#

This is Rendell's output, with year of publication, alternate titles (if any), Swedish titles, and the detective of the story. Nos. 48-57 are those short stories that have not been collected in book-form, as far as I know. Then follow the novels that were published under the pseudonym Barbara Vine (nos. 58-67). Last is the one short story that has been published under the Vine pseudonym.
