Advocate, The ... July 22, 2003 by Andy Dehnart Mary Renault is an enduring literary superstar, and not just because of her addictive way with a story. Twenty years after her death, her eight best-selling novels of ancient Greeceespecially her trilogy on the pansexual ancient hero Alexander the Great, now being adapted for HBOare still introducing young gay readers to a world where same-sex love can be heroic. Fewer readers know that as a young writer, starting before World War II, Renault shocked society with six contemporary novels that featured honest and complex gay and lesbian protagonists. This summer Vintage releases two of these titles: The Friendly Young Ladies (1944) and The Charioteer (1953).

The Glimpse of a Strong Greek Light Novelist Linda Proud assesses the work of Mary Renault The moments recur and, flipped through like one of those little cartoon books we had as children, give the semblance of movement. But they are frozen moments, scenes from an unhappy, frustrated childhood.
The first scene is our last history lesson before the long vacation. We were neither bright children nor good, and we had the teacher we deserved: fierce, cruel and uncompromising. On that particular day, she moved furiously between the desks, issuing sheets of paper duplicated via a stencil on a Gestetner machine. The King Must Die by Mary Renault Special Order

The ink was purple, the sheet smelt of methylated spirits, and the list was of titles for holiday reading, but where was Tudor England or The Repeal of the Corn Laws? From the titles you would not know that these were history books. The titles were strange; the titles were interesting.
My hand shot up, perhaps for the first time ever. 'Please Miss!' I was too vibrantly alert to be shy. 'Are these novels?' For once Mrs C. looked almost capable of loving. 'Yes, girlie. It's called historical fiction.'

The Bull from the Sea The King Must Die The Bull from the Sea
The legend of Theseus belongs to the same sort of period as the Trojan War, perhaps best described as legendary history. How far the legends were based on real events and people is uncertain; what is certain is that they exerted a powerful hold on the imagination and are still being retold now, thousands of years later. The Bull from the Sea
Masterful retelling of the Theseus legend.

In the Author's Note at the end of The King Must Die , she explains why she decided to make him a small man and concludes: "If one examines the legend in this light, a well-defined personality emerges. It is that of a light-weight; brave and aggressive, physically tough and quick; highly sexed and rather promiscuous; touchily proud, but with a feeling for the underdog; resembling Alexander in his precocious competence, gift of leadership, and romantic sense of destiny."

She was the first of two daughters of Frank Challans, a physician, and Clementine Mary Baxter Challans. She attended boarding school and studied English at St. Hugh's College, Oxford. Instead of undertaking the teaching career she had prepared for, she took a clerical job but soon returned to Oxford, this time to Radcliffe Infirmary, to study nursing. Her first published novel, Promise of Love (1939; published as Purposes of Love in Britain), earned sufficient royalties to allow her to write full time. When England entered World War II, she returned to nursing but continued to write. At the end of the war, Renault traveled in Europe, the Mediterranean countries (particularly Greece and the Aegean Islands), and Africa. In 1948 she moved to South Africa, where she lived for the remainder of her life. ...
