Erich Maria Remarque
It is a difficult job to break down the writer Remarque in a short description. He had all his life granted very few interviews. He slipped all his experencies in his novels even if slight changed. He drew the line at experiences all too private, that wasn't of the world's business. He also disdained to describe detailed other people in his life in his novels because he found this irreverent. He made it a rule to distribute on several characters. By it he obtained realistic characters.
Remarque belongs definitely to the most successful German romanciers. His most successful novel - "All Quiet on the Western front" - published in 1927, is often described as the most wide-spread book of the world after the Bible. His literary styles can be subdivided into the following notes: strong powers of observation, unvarnished realism, skepticism, pessimism, connected with a subliminal social engagement. "One doesn't believe, how difficult I make it myself, to write so understandable. What you can read with easeness and - hopefully! - without any difficulties at the end, is the result of long polishment, simplification and correction. Especially if the man in the street is able to understand me, I have reached my goal". His handwriting conveys, according to graphological points of view, a modest, even if a proud man, who is reserved as far as he is concerned.

Biography of Erich Remarque (1898-1970)
Erich Remarque Critic Richard Firda wrote in retrospect of French author Erich Maria Remarque as "destined to span a wide range of political, social, and historical changes that affected not only Germany but Europe and the United States." Born as Erich Paul on June 22, 1898 in Osnabruck, Germany, Remarque was the second son (and third child) of the lower middle-class family of Peter Franz Remarque and Anna Maria Stallknecht. It was in Osnabruck where Remarque was raised, developing boyhood interests of fishing and butterfly collecting. In Catholic school, he was labeled as talented and gifted, though many biographers believe that his idealistic nature often gave way to depression and discouragement with real life situation. His hospital stay was interrupted by two deaths: his mother's as well as his close friend, Fritz Horsteimeier. Although both events dealt him an emotional blow, Remarque's artistic talent had been revived. His interest in writing and publishing was sparked and the writer even submitted his first attempts at writing to a German periodical. But in October of 1918, Remarque was declared fit for garrison and was released from the hospital. Assigned to the First Replacement Battalion of Infantry Regiment 78 in his hometown, the writer was examined by a battalion physician and pronounced fit for duty. Luckily for Remarque, the World War I armistice was signed four days later.

THE AUTHOR AND HIS TIMES
The family's poverty drove Remarque as a teenager to earn his own clothes money (giving piano lessons). He developed a craving for luxury, which he never outgrew. His piano playing and other interests, such as collecting butterflies and exploring streams and forests, later appeared in his fictional characters. His love of writing earned him the nickname Smudge. Because of the frequent moving, Remarque attended two different elementary schools and then the Catholic Praparande (preparatory school). He loved the drama of Catholic rituals, the beauty of churches, the flowers in cloister gardens, and works of art. He later wrote with a sense of theater, and he featured churches and museums, flowers and trees as symbols of enduring peace. While in school, he had problems with teachers, however, and eventually paid them back by ridiculing them in his novels. At the Praparande he argued so much with one teacher that he used the man's personality and another's name (Konschorek) to produce a specific character in All Quiet on the Western Front: Schoolmaster Kantorek. The next few years in Germany brought shortages, profiteering, runaway inflation, unemployment, riots, and extremist politics- including the rise of National Socialism from the postwar German Workers Party, a group almost fanatic in stressing nationalism. For lack of anything better to do, Remarque and several friends returned to the Seminar, but they found the studies and the older teachers' attitudes ridiculous. Remarque became involved in many disputes. For example, to ridicule the town authorities for their continued belief in the glory of war, he had himself photographed with his dog for the local paper- he in an officer's uniform decorated with two Iron Crosses and other medals. The scandalized Osnabruck officials demanded a public apology.

Erich Maria Remarque Is Dead; Novels Recorded Agony of War
Special to The New York Times GENEVA, Sept. 25Erich Maria Remarque, the German-born author who attained world fame with his World War I novel "All Quiet on the Western Front," died at noon today of a heart collapse at the Sant Agnese clinic at Locarno, Switzerland. He was 72 years old. A naturalized American, Mr. Remarque made his residence at Porto Ronco on the Swiss shore of Lake Maggiore for 40 years. At his bedside when he died was his wife, the actress Paulette Goddard. Mrs. Remarque said by telephone that her husband's heart collapse had been brought on by an aneurysm, a tumor formed by the dilatation of an artery. He had been suffering for four months, she said. A funeral service is to be held Sunday at the Roman Catholic Church at Ronco, a village near Mr. Remarque's residence. Burial will be at the village cemetery "overlooking the Lake Maggiore that he loved so much," his widow said. Compassionate Storyteller By ALDEN WHITMAN The power to move people by words, to arouse their sensibilities as well as their minds, was Erich Maria Remarque's to an extraordinary degree. He demonstrated it again and again in novels that sold in the millions, but in none so much as in "All Quiet on the Western Front."

  • Erich Maria Remarque 1898–1970
(Born Erich Paul Remark) German-born novelist, playwright, journalist, poet, and essayist. Remarque is considered one of the most important war novelists in contemporary literature. At one time he wrote articles on sports, travel, and the "good life" for various magazines. Critics dismissed Remarque because of the frivolous nature of many of these pieces. He also wrote two early novels and a collection of poems and essays which were virtually ignored by critics and readers before the publication of his highly-acclaimed war novel All Quiet on the Western Front . In this novel and the ones that followed, however, Remarque seems to disregard technique in his concern with illustrating the physical and spiritual doom of the First World War generation in Germany. Remarque's strengths as a writer are cited as the simple, direct language of the war novels—in contrast to the often violent subject matter—and his ability to create moving, realistic characters and situations, but some critics feel that his writing occasionally suffers from an emphasis on content. Remarque is best remembered for All Quiet on the Western Front . Although an introductory paragraph states that the novel is supposed to represent the feelings of a whole generation, it actually deals only with those soldiers who learn to hate the futility and destruction of war. Initially

Updated - Sunday, 21 October, 2001 German novelist (1898-1970, pseudonym for Erich Paul Remark), who became famous with his work Im Westen Nichts Neues (tr. All Quiet on the Western Front , 1929), one of the best-known anti-war novels, which depicted the horrors of war from the point of view of the ordinary soldiers. In his works Remarque focused largely on the collapse of the old European world and values from 1914 through the cold war. "It is just as much a matter of chance that I am still alive as that I might have been hit. In a bomb-proof dug-out I may be smashed to atoms and in the open may survive ten hour's bombardment unscratched. No soldier outlives a thousand chances. But every soldier believes in Chance and trusts his luck." (from All Quiet on the Western Front Erich Maria Remarque was born in Ossnabrück, Lower Saxony, into modest circumstances. His ancestors were French. Remarque's mother was Anna Marie Kramer and father, Peter Maria Kramer, a bookbinder. He studied at the University of Münster but had to enlist in the German army at the age of 18. He fought on the Western Front and was wounded several times. After his discharge Remarque had taken a teacher's course offered to veterans by the government. He taught for a year in a school, and tried also his hand as a stonecutter and a test-car driver.
