Erich Maria Remarque is in many ways the quintessential twentieth-century man. Caught between the intense nineteenth-century nationalism of his youth and the dissolution and despair brought on by World War I, Remarque embodies the phychological and existential dilemmas of his generation. Though Remaque is remembered in the United States primarily
as the author of All Quiet on the Western Front , his life and work intersect nearly every important moment of this century. He fought in the German army during World War I, suffering the plight of returning veterans in Weimar Germany. He turned this experience into All Quiet ,one of the most influential novels of our time. With the wealth the gained from the popularity of All Quiet , he became one of the century's first playboys. He also became a connoisseur of fine art and antiques, collecting an outstanding group of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art. The perception of All Quiet as a pacifist novel and Remaque's heartfelt indignation about human suffering mad him a spokeman against facism in all forms, espacially during World War II. His literary career made him the center of the publishing world for dacades. It also opened the door for him the world of cinema, through which he entered the world of glamour. His numerous lovers included Malene Dietrich and Natasha Paley Wilson, and he counted among his friends Ingrid Bergman, Greta Garbo, and many other Hollywood stars.
Thomas Thornton, the curator of this exhibition, likens Remarque's life to the German Romantic wanderer figurea lonely man on a perceptual search for emotional fullfilment, for a sense of identity, for a place to call home. As the image from one of his many passports on the cover of catalogues shows, Remarque could not stop travellingat least not until he met actress Paulette Goddard, with whom he finally found solace and an end to his wandering. Drawing on the extensive Erich Maria Remarque and Paulette Goddard Papers, and on the Erich Maria Remarque Library held here in the Fales Library, Thornton gives us a sympathetic and personal view of Remarque; he goes beyond the fame and glamour, and shows Remarque's strengths as well as his vulnerabilities, leaving us with a sense of his intense humanity.

It's the one fictional work of the era that we might say has affected history. There is no telling how many readers and leaders were moved by the book to become anti-militaristic. More importantly though, its depictions of the soul-destroying insanity of warfare have become part of our modern response to war—among those of us both for and against any particular conflict—without us necessarily realizing how we have come to absorb these attitudes. This pervasive effect is what elevates Remarque's first novel into being an icon of the modern world above his many other worthy works.

Erich Maria Remarque (1898-1970) - pseudonym for Erich Paul Remark German writer, who became famous with his novel IM WESTEN NICHTS NEUES (tr. All Quiet on the Western Front , 1929), which depicted the horrors of war from the point of view of the ordinary soldiers. In his works Remarque focused largely on the collapse of the old European world and values. Although his later novels also were successful, Remarque lived in the shadow of his "big" first book. "It is just as much a matter of chance that I am still alive as that I might have been hit. In a bomb-proof dug-out I may be smashed to atoms and in the open may survive ten hour's bombardment unscratched. No soldier outlives a thousand chances. But every soldier believes in Chance and trusts his luck." (from All Quiet on the Western Front Erich Maria Remarque was born in Osnabrück, Lower Saxony, into modest circumstances. His ancestors were French, the family name was 'Germanized' early in the nineteeth century. Peter Franz Remark, Remarque's father, was a poorly paid bookbinder. Although Franz Remark did not show much interest in intellectual activities, except his interest in the occult, the family had a piano, and at one point in his life Remarque planned a musical career. In 1904, at the age of six, Remarque entered the Domschule (cathedral school), and four years later he moved to the Johannisschle. Remarque was "always the best in class", as one of his closest school friends later recalled.

Erich Maria Remarque
Remarque is one of the most popular and most widely-read authors of German literature in the 20th century. His works have been translated in more than 50 languages. Erich Maria Remarque was born on June 22, 1898 in Osnabrueck, Germany, where the Erich Maria Remarque Gesellschaft was afterwards founded. He was born as Erich Paul Remark, or, as some sources insist, as Erich Paul Kramer . Later, in 1929, he changed his middle name to Maria, his mother's middle name, and his surname to Remarque - family name Kramer spelled backwards. The difficult financial situation in Remarque's family caused his early work. As a teenager he began giving piano lessons to earn money to buy nice clothes. Remarque had luxurious tastes throughout his life. Raised as a Roman Catholic, he developed a love for the beauty of churches and the deep sense of the religious rituals. He admired music and nature, which he believed to be true representations of peace and beauty. In 1916, Remarque, a third-year student at a teachers' training college, was drafted into the German army. He served on the Western front and was several times wounded. Profoundly changed by the war, Remarque returned to the college after the peace was resumed in 1918, but the civilian life seemed almost unreal and ridiculous after what he and his friends experienced during the war. Before choosing the career of a writer, Remarque tried a series of jobs from stonecutter and a test-cardriver to sports journalist. Nothing seemed to appeal to him.
