About Friends of Mystery
Friends of Mystery is a non-profit literary/educational organization headquartered in Portland, Oregon. Its purpose is to promote educational study in all realms related to mystery. Members are interested in fiction, true crime, how mysteries are solved, and many other aspects of knowledge that can be included in the term "mystery". We sponsor a series of public meetings, called Bloody Thursdays , publish a newsletter, The Blood-Letter , give an annual award, the Spotted Owl , for the best mystery by a Pacific Northwest author. And, we also sponsor a local reading group.

The trust paradox

For me the fundamental paradox of the Christian life is summed up in this exhortation: Try harder to trust God.

General statement : I start out trying to cope with the shortcomings of my present environment by learning more about other more interesting environments. This leads me to think more about those other environments and makes me more unhappy about the present shortcomings. This tension eventually becomes unbearable, leading to self-induced instability. Whodunit?
This lists the authors in my mystery collection as of August 2007. I should say “virtual collection”, because I deaccessioned much of the physical collection when we moved into a smaller place in 2006, keeping only a favorite subset and this list of who was once there. Some of these authors test the limits of "mystery", either as to genre or as to quality - depressingly often, as to both. I owned ' em , so I list ' em . Authors whose books I would definitely buy again carry a single "*"; authors I might even buy in hardcover carry a double "**" (although this is moot in the case of authors who write no more). I'll buy books by unrated authors again, too, and by authors I've not yet read. (Truth be told, I'll buy and read books I've read before, remembering neither the mystery nor the solution. On occasion I won't realize that until I shelve them, and, if the publisher has changed the cover, perhaps not even then.) I remember names badly, so there are authors I've failed to rate because I've forgotten who they are. Don't take the ratings too seriously. The list grows over time. Ratings change without notice. Comments or recommendations welcome, preferably by

      Chairman
Philip Reed attended the public schools of Milwaukee and in 1917 entered the University of Wisconsin, but quit in his freshman year to join the Army. An appendix operation kept him out of the American Expeditionary Forces; when the Armistice came he was at Fort Monroe, training for the heavy artillery. Reed returned to Wisconsin to complete his degree in electrical engineering. GE, then scouting for engineering talent, offered Reed a job at $115 a month, but he refused it. Instead, he took a $2,000-a-year job with a firm of patent lawyers in New York. By studying nights at Fordham, he got his law degree in 1924, and in due course was admitted to the New York Bar. In 1926, went to work for Judge C. W. Appleton in GE's law department in New York where he had frequent contact with Swope and Young, who gave him an assortment of special assignments. Reed was transferred to the Incandescent Lamp Department in 1927 and became its general counsel in 1934. Because he was an effective speaker, he was invited by plant managers to talk on labor relations, company policies and pension plans. In December 1937, he was appointed assistant to the President and two years later was elected chairman of the board.

Global Domination may still be played with the updated components. In the updated Risk, the Goal is to be the first player to complete 3 Objectives and be in control of your capital." link 1 comment post comment Do board/card games need to be "complete?" 06:51 am Recently, I've spent a lot of time working on the print buying for a few large-box games. Part of that work has been focused on making the games complete; if you need it to play, it's in the box.
Is this the right approach? I think it is I know that when I buy a game, which is not a rare event, I expect the game to be complete but I would like to hear what others think. link 8 comments post comment Impressive Release...
