Joy Novak Fall 2005 IS – 289: Interpreting Documents A New Generation of Activism: The Sudden Political Shift in Gay Activism as Seen in Event Announcements from Before and After the Stonewall Riots In his essay “The Outlaw Sensibility in the Arts From Drag and Leather to Prose, the Mythology of Stonewall, and a Defense of Stereotypes,” John Rechy addresses the symbolic importance that the gay and lesbian community has placed on the Stonewall riots that took place in June of 1969.  Regarding the common perception of the riots, he writes “Overnight – or so the myth has come to indicate – gay liberation was born.  The next morning, freed, everyone sprang out of closets dank with decades of oppression and proclaimed their proud identity under a showers of light arguing a new day.”   However Rechy argues that Stonewall was only one event in the struggle for gay and lesbian rights which he notes had been being fought before the Stonewall riots of 1969.   Yet, despite the existence and strives of the gay rights movement before this event, the riots are still considered by many a turning point, if not the beginning, of the gay civil rights movement.  Ultimately, the Stonewall riots encouraged homosexuals from the youth generation of late 1960s to fight for gay and lesbian rights.  The movement before and after Stonewall show distinct generational differences, as seen in documents such as gay event announcements, which can attribute to the lasting impact of Stonewall on the development of the gay and lesbian collective identity.

Literary Criticism/West What, if anything, is western about western American autobiography? The essays in this anthology explore the idea of place as it is revealed in a variety of texts rooted in the West—from a bestselling memoir that connects environmental disruption with the impact of disease on a family, to a Paiute woman’s personal history presented in defense of her public activities, to a famous folksinger’s “novel” of his life. Whether studying writers such as Terry Tempest Williams, William Kittredge, and Woody Guthrie or lesser known men and women whose autobiographies are grounded in western America, this thorough volume of criticism and scholarship seeks to understand the ways the West takes shape in “lifewriting” as landscape, language, or state of mind. Kathleen Boardman is associate professor of English and associate dean of the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Nevada, Reno.

FIRST BOOKS by AMERICAN WRITERS
GEORGETOWN UNIVERSITY LIBRARY
Introduction An author's first book, as often as not, marks something of a watershed in his life. If, as is usual, he (or she) goes on to publish again, the maiden effort may end up something of an embarrassment in later years. But that maiden effort may be an only effort, too, as is the case with Margaret Mitchell's Gone with the Wind or John Parke's Lyrics of Horace . All too frequently the "first book" takes the ephemeral form of a slim pamphlet. Or it embodies work far removed from that for which its author later will be best known. But to the collector of first editions, it is, whatever its form, the first of the first. And yet, of course, the collector must seek Ann Beattie's first two books, a novel and a volume of short stories published on the same day. Fanshawe and Tamerlane the lure that takes him upon the rocks, for he will come to discover that although Hawthorne's and Poe's works are more famous, they are neither more common nor more often read than Jesse Stuart's Harvest of Youth . Though certainly far, far more expensive.
