ALS ("Geo Cruikshank"), 1 1/2pp, 8vo, Seaford, Sussex, 25 October 1866, with original envelope. To the editor, Charles Kent, at "The Sun": "Your 'Sun' has just shone upon us and the light it throws upon the 'Beggars Benison' is certainly a just light. . . . I just write this to beg (if not too late) that you will . . . put by 3 copies and I will buy them. . . . The copy you sent just came in time for me to forward to the author who resides in Scotland. . . . " Lightly soiled; near-fine. George Cruikshank (1792-1878); English artist and caricaturist. He was the illustrator of Dickens's two series of "Sketches by Boz" (1836, 1837) and of "Oliver Twist" (1838). William Charles Mark Kent (1823-1902); English author and journalist. He wrote for "Household Words" and "All the Year Round," and came into intimate relations with Dickens, the editor and proprietor. Kent's literary acquaintance was large, and included, besides Dickens, Leigh Hunt, both the first and the second Lord Lytton, Charles Reade, Robert Browning, George Meredith, and Matthew Arnold. Dickens wrote a letter to Kent within an hour of the novelist's death (8 June 1870), and Kent presented it to the British Museum in 1879.
