Her books reflect her love of the land, particularly the land and people of north central Florida. In 1939 Rawlings was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for fiction for her young adult novel The Yearling (1938), the popular and critical success of which made her one of the most beloved of American children's authors. She was born Marjorie Kinnan in Washington, D.C. After her father died in 1913, she moved with her mother and brother to Madison, Wisconsin, where she soon enrolled at the University of Wisconsin, graduating in 1918 with a B.A. degree in English. DEP Recognizes Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings During Women's History Month
Rawlings remembered for compelling depictions of Florida wilderness TALLAHASSEE - The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) recognizes Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, Pulitzer prize-winning author of The Yearling, during National Women’s History Month. Now a state park, her home along with her words serve as a keystone, connecting Florida’s natural and cultural resources. “With her ability to beautifully portray the environment and interweave the natural places with the people who lived there, Rawlings’ writings reconnect us to natural Florida,” said DEP Secretary Colleen M. Castille. “National Women’s History Month is an excellent opportunity to recognize this Florida writer of national influence who understood our need to respect, protect and care for the land.” Born in 1896 in Washington, D.C., Rawlings graduated from the University of Wisconsin and went on to work as a journalist for the next 10 years. In 1928, she came to Florida to run an orange grove farm and write. Today her Cross Creek farm is the Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Historic State Park, where thousands come each year to walk through the house, grove and farmyard. Her book Cross Creek ends with the words, “It seems to me that the earth may be borrowed but not bought. It may be used but not owned. It gives itself in response to love and tending, offers it seasonal flowering and fruiting. But we are tenants and not possessors, lovers and not masters. Cross Creek belongs to the wind and the rain, to the sun and the seasons, to the secrecy of seed, and beyond all, to time.”*

Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings and her husband, Charles, moved to this inspiring retreat in Cross Creek, Florida, in 1928. The eight-room cracker-style house was built during the 1880s of native cypress and heart pine. Actually three separate structures connected by a bathroom, screened porches, and verandahs, this house, surrounded by nature, gave Rawlings the quiet atmosphere she needed for writing. She often spent 8 to 12 hours a day on the verandah where she wrote and watched "the coming and goings of birds to the feed basket in a crepe myrtle bush."
While living in Cross Creek, Rawlings wrote her Pulitzer-Prize winning novel
