"Cross Creek belongs to the wind and the rain, to the sun and the seasons, to the cosmic secrecy of seed, and beyond all, to time."
Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings published Cross Creek in February 1942. It is a collection of reminiscences, anecdotes, and reflections of her life in frontier Cross Creek, Florida, beginning in 1928 until her death in 1953. A believer that there is "an affinity between people and places," she felt that her "life and destinty were tied up with the simple way of life" she found at Cross Creek. This web page was created by Dr. Anna Lillios, of the University of Central Florida, at the request of the Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Society. The MKR Society plans to distribute information about this web page to high school students throughout the state of Florida. The essays were written by students in Dr. Lillios's fall 2002 Florida Writers course. For further information, contact Dr. Lillios at lillios@pegasus.cc.ucf.edu

    By Murray D. Laurie
The white frame Cracker house with its cypress-shingled roof that was the home of author Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings in Cross Creek, Florida, was added to from time to time as need and her unsteady income permitted. Sitting on the open porch on a summer day, the sound of the electric fan in the bedroom forms a background hum, but the palm fans on the deerhide chair are reminders of the early days when there was no electricity. The old outhouse remains, but Rawlings rejoiced in the indoor bathroom she added with the proceeds of the sale of one of her first magazine stories. When Marjorie Rawlings, reared in Washington, DC, came to the rural Florida village near Gainesville in 1928, during the Depression, she found not only the sense of place she yearned for, but a bounteous source of material for her writing. Her home in Cross Creek, which became a magnet for her friends and admirers even before the movie of the same name, starring Mary Steenburgen, came out in 1984, draws more than 30,000 visitors a year. Despite her sophisticated tastes and her love of spirited conversation, she embraced the song of the cardinals and mockingbirds in her garden, the scent of her own orange blossoms, and her down-to-earth, stubborn and surprisingly complicated neighbors, whom she wrote about in her best selling book, "Cross Creek." The birds still sing from the wire fence surrounding the tomato plants and bean bushes, the orange trees still perfume the air, and the neighbors still keep a wary eye out for what goes on at "Miz Rawlings" place.

In 1928, Rawlings gave up a journalism career to settle on a farm in Cross Creek, Florida. Her difficult life there gave her the setting and theme for her novels. Her best-known work, The Yearling, won the 1939 Pulitzer Prize for fiction. The novel is set in rural Florida in the 1870's. It tells the story of a 12-year-old boy whose father must kill the boy's pet fawn because the animal was eating the family's scanty crops.

A trip up to Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings' Florida home is a trip back in time, and a chance to imagine old Florida in the early part of the 20th century.
Rawlings is probably best known for her book, "The Yearling," although it is by no means her only Florida-based work. There were others, including her memoirs, "Cross Creek."
When Rawlings moved to Cross Creek in 1928, making a living in the small community was not an easy task. Farming and hunting were both livelihoods and pastimes for the local folks. Rawlings was intrigued by the locals, who found her to be rather strange, but they accepted and sometimes ignored her, which was probably as good as it got.
