'twas part of a festival called bealtaine it's a national festival celebrating creativity in older people. i choose to teach barbara ras and william stafford because they both published first books in their late forties, because many of their poems suit the festival's theme (forever begin), and because they are accessible. we read "rhapsody today," and "you can't have it all" by ras and "you reading this, be ready," "being eighty," "choosing a dog," "any morning," and "climbing toward the river" by stafford. folks loved these poems. said they now love poetry. that who knew poetry could be so pleasurable. we had a great chat about trying to experience and appreciate each moment as new, a subject both poets write about. tried to rouse ourselves into commiting to watching the day break every morning, like stafford. once sophie gets into a regular sleep pattern, i think i'll give it a go. but then i'm reminded of stafford saying, "are you waiting for better thoughts?" in other words, get off your duff, quit making excuses, time enough for sleep when you're gone. posted by Heidi Lynn Staples at 12:50 PM 0 Comments: Post a Comment bout heidi lynn staples is an american poet living and writing in dublin, ireland

We use biochemical, biophysical and molecular biology approaches to investigate how sequence-specific DNA binding transcription factors regulate gene expression in normal and diseased states. Current projects explore signaling pathways, DNA binding properties, and protein-protein interactions within the ETS family of regulatory transcription factors. Regulation of gene expression requires the targeting of regulatory transcription factors to their site of action in the genome. Molecular complementarity between a regulatory protein and its DNA binding site provides the primary targeting mechanism. A constellation of electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions between matching surfaces of the DNA helix and the protein establish high-affinity and sequence-specific binding. The effectiveness of this macromolecular matchmaking is challenged by the complexities of eukaryotes. There are hundreds of regulatory transcription factors that function by binding DNA sequences within promoter regions. Almost all of these proteins are encoded by multi-gene families. Members of a family display the same structural fold for binding DNA and recognize similar DNA sequences. My laboratory investigates the regulatory pathways that provide specificity for transcription factors that belong to multigene families.

The investigated sites are situated on the southern part of the Kola Peninsula (three sites), on the Karelian Isthmus (two sites), in the Valdaj region (one site), in eastern Russian Karelia (four sites) and in the Jaroslavl region north of Moscow (three sites). The high-resolution analyses of the sediments include pollen-, macrofossil- and diatom analyses, geochemistry, mineral magnetic parameters, tephra analysis and AMS C measurements.

Birds, up there, away and away. Up there, plum flowers, petals falling everywhere too fast. My tail nearly levitates my whole behind.
