(opens in new window) First established in June 1990, the Arthur Ransome Society Limited has its registered office at the Abbot Hall Museum of Lakeland Life in Kendal, England. 54. Norfolk Broads Explorer - Arthur Ransome And The Norfolk Broads
As popular as ever after seventy years, the ghost of children s author, arthur ransome, still haunts the boating village of Horning, on the River Bure.
http://www.norfolkbroadsexplorer.com/Arthur_Ransome_And_The_Norfolk_Broads.html
Arthur Ransome And The Norfolk Broads
Many visitors are drawn to the Norfolk Broads every year because of the five children's books, written in the 1930s and 1940s by Arthur Ransome. These are "Secret Water", "Peter Duck", "We Didn't Mean To Go To Sea" and "Coot Club" and "The Big Six", the latter two being set in the village of Horning, on the River Bure. Arrive for the first time as a visitor to Horning, with Ransome's description of Horning fresh in your mind, and shivers will run down your spine, as you realise it is exactly as Ransome described it in 1933, in his world famous book, "Coot Club". Swan Inn, Horning The Staithe, Horning There is the Swan Inn, right on the bend in the river. Stroll along the river bank, past the Swan Inn and there is the staithe exactly as pictured in the line drawing that forms the frontispiece of "The Big Six". Beyond that, some of the boating sheds are still there, exactly as in Ransome's day. And the ghost of Arthur Ransome is never far away. Stroll into the post office, just behind the staithe, and you can still buy copies of "The Big Six" and "Coot Club", in both hardback and paperback. In an age where books get "remaindered" almost as fast as yesterday's newspapers, that is firm testimony to the enduring nature of Ransome's uncomplicated stories of a group of small boys and one girl, Dorothea, in an age when conservation and care of wildlife were given scant regard. It's also a prophetic comment on 21st century attempts to strike a balance between the demands of tourism and the delicate ecology of this unique area.

Arthur Ransome - code S76 of the British Intelligence
Posted by Jim Down in Books section Arthur Ransome was born in Leeds, Yorkshire, England on January 18, 1884. His father Cyric was a history professor and a great lover of nature. As a child, Arthur spent much of his vacation in sailing, camping and exploring the countryside in England's Lake Country near Lake Coniston and Lake Windermere. His poor vision, lack of athletic skills and poor academic performance left him with some unhappy memories of his school experiences.
But newly disclosed records have confirmed that Ransome spied on Bolshevik Russia for MI6, supplying valuable information on the Soviet leadership in the years after the revolution. Ransome was working as a foreign correspondent for The Observer and the Manchester Guardian in 1917, was always seen as a leftwinger who sympathised with Bolshevism. He even wrote a book in defence of the revolution. Ransome entered Russia early in 1919 and soon became friendly with the leading Bolsheviks. His SIS controller, a Major Scale, was assistant British military attach? in Stockholm. Ransome arranged with Scale that if things became too hot for him in Russia the Foreign Office should send an officer to the Soviet Commissar for Foreign Affairs recalling him immediately. His interest in nature can be seen in books such as The Coot Club, published by D. R. Godine in 1990. Here Dorothy and Dick have an adventure in the English countryside and attempt with their friends to protect nesting birds from boaters.

Arthur Ransome 1884 - 1967
The Ransomes lived in the Winster valley and Haverthwaite where he wrote many of the Swallows and Amazons series, the majority set in the Lake District. The books follow the adventures of the Walker and Blackett children camping on islands, mining for gold, fighting fell fires and conquering mountains. Both Arthur and Eugenia are buried in Rusland churchyard.
Quotations
"There was a new world. Everything was white, and somehow still. Everything was holding its breath. The field stretching down to the lake was like a brilliant white counterpane without a crinkle in it. The yew trees close by the farmhouse were laden with snow [...] The island was a white island, except where the rocks rose straight up out of the still water. The snow seemed to have spread downwards from the tops of the hills until everything was covered. It lay like a slab of icing on a slice of cake along the stone wall of the garden. The grey outhouses had thick white roofs. And there was this magical brightness in the air." – from Winter Holiday
