Jump to: navigation search Cover of Arthur Ransome's autobiography Arthur Mitchell Ransome 18 January 3 June ), was a British author and journalist. He is best known for writing the Swallows and Amazons series of children's books. These tell of school-holiday adventures of children, mostly in the Lake District and the Norfolk Broads . Many of the books involve sailing; other common subjects include fishing and camping . The books remain popular to the point that they provide a basis of a tourist industry around Windermere and Coniston Water — the two lakes that Ransome used as the basis for his fictional North Country lake. Ransome was born in Leeds , where his father lectured as a Professor of History . His father's death in 1897 had a lasting effect on Ransome, who always tried to overcome his belief that his father had lacked confidence in his abilities. Ransome received his formal education first in Windermere and then at Rugby School (where he lived in Lewis Carroll 's study room) but did not entirely enjoy the experience - due to his poor vision, lack of athletic skill, and limited academic achievement. He attended Yorkshire College , his father's college, for a year, studying chemistry . However, he abandoned the college and went to London to become a writer. He took low-paying jobs as an office assistant in a publishing company and as editor of a failing magazine, while writing and becoming a member of the literary scene of London.

During this period he worked closely with Hamilton Fyfe , a journalist employed by the Daily Mail
After the Russian Revolution, Ransome remained in the country and became friendly with Lenin and other Bolshevik leaders. His reports provided a sympathetic view of the revolution and when he arrived back in England in 1919 he was arrested by the police. After being interviewed by Sir Basil Thomson Deputy Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police

They are definitely inferior things, belonging to the vegetable not the animal world, rooted and stationary, incapable of gay transition. I admit, doubtfully, as exceptions, snail-shells and caravans. The desire to build a house is the tired wish of a man content thenceforward with a single anchorage. The desire to build a boat is the desire of youth, unwilling yet to accept the idea of a final resting-place.

This section is devoted to the man, his books and his life Arthur Mitchell Ransome was born in Leeds in 1884 and educated in Windermere and Rugby. His family spent their summers at Nibthwaite, to the south of Coniston Water. In 1902, Ransome abandoned a chemistry degree to become a publisher's office boy in London. He used this precarious existence to practise writing, producing several minor works before Bohemia in London (1907), a study of London's artistic scene and his first significant book. An interest in folklore, together with a desire to escape an unhappy first marriage, led Ransome to St Petersburg, where he was ideally placed to observe and report on the Russian Revolution. He knew many of the leading Bolsheviks, including Lenin, Radek, Trotsky and the latter's secretary, Evgenia Shvelpina. These contacts led to persistent but unproven accusations that he "spied" for both the Bolsheviks and Britain. Ransome married Evgenia and returned to England in 1924 Settling in the Lake District, he spent the late 1920s as a foreign correspondent and highly-respected angling columnist for the

    Arthur Ransome Biographical Sketch
Arthur Ransome was born in Leeds , Yorkshire, England on January 18, 1884. His father Cyric was a history professor and a great lover of nature. As a child, Arthur spent much of his vacation in sailing, camping and exploring the countryside in England's Lake Country near Lake Coniston and Lake Windermere . You'll find some wonderful pictures at Arthur Ransome Picture File . This beautiful countryside influenced many other famous English writers, such as William Wordsworth. Arthur and his father shared a great love of fishing. He later used these wonderful settings from nature in his children's books. You can read more about this aspect of his life at Arthur Ransome . Like many upper class English children, Arthur was educated at Rugby where he actually lived in Lewis Carroll's study room (1). His poor vision, lack of athletic skills and poor academic performance left him with some unhappy memories of his school experiences (2).

    'Arthur Ransome'
Arthur Ransome was born in Leeds on 18th Jan 1884. As a small boy he had holidays around Coniston , and attended preparatory school in Windermere, which gave Ransome an early taste for Lakeland. After completing his education, he worked in London, coming North whenever he could. He became a friend of W.G. Collingwood , writer artist and secretary to John Ruskin . Collingwood lived at Lanehead, beside Coniston Water, and it was here that Ransome learned to sail. Ransome's favourite childhood book was W.G. Collingwood's Thorstein of the Mere , which was set around Coniston. After an unsuccessful marriage, he went to Russia, where he met his future wife Evgenia Petrovna Shelepina, who had been Trotsky's secretary. In 1924, he gained a divorce, and was able to marry Evgenia and come back to The Lake District, living first in the Winster Valley. Apart from two periods when he went South, he lived in Cumbria for the rest of his life, finding inspiration and settings for Swallows and Amazons . His last house was Hill Top at Haverthwaite. Arthur Ransome based his book 'Swallows and Amazons' on Coniston Water , and much fun may be had trying to discover the locations of the stories. There are special interest cruises on the

The story of "Swallows and Amazons" began with Arthur Ransome's holiday at Coniston as a child and grew out of the happy summer of 1928 when he and Ernest Altounyan bought two 13-foot dinghies for the young Altounyans to learn to sail. When they had returned to Syria and he was sailing the Swallow on Lake Windermere, Arthur set to work on a story which was to remind them of their holiday. He remembered his own childhood holidays and put the Altounyans into the story with their boats and their "Uncle Arthur", thinly disguised as Captain Flint.
Arthur made his first visit to the Broads in 1919 and having spent part of the summer in England, he went fishing in Norfolk. Ernest Altounyan, who had met Arthur around 1903, claimed to have taught him to sail tacking along the rivers of the Broads. Ernest was a great Broads enthusiast and he almost certainly introduced Arthur to the area before he took his family out to Aleppo in 1919. Right, the yacht "Winsome"

    Arthur Ransome - Peter Duck
When I was a kid, I read and re-read the "Swallows and Amazons" novels many times. The descriptions of children free to idle their summer holiday's away on the lakes and hills of the Lake District, with their own little sailing boats spoke to me more than anyone could have imagined. Of course, 70 years after they were set, you'd be hard pressed to find a family willing to let their kids play around on Lake Conistan, without life-jackets. Never mind let them camp over night.
Of the whole series though, there were a couple of novels that sat uneasily with the others. One of these, Peter Duck, is the story of a sailing trip that the Swallows and Amazons undertake, with Captain Flint and the old sea dog Peter Duck.
The trip, predictably for a children's adventure involves pirates, treasure and ship-wreck. It's all told in Ransome's wonderfully simple style.
Ransome was a fascinating man - Russian correspondant for the Manchester Guardian, he ended up marrying (and bringing back to London) Trotsky's secretary, who I believe went on to do quite alot in the British Communist Party. I am priviledged to have on my shelves two small volumes of Ransome's memoirs of his time in Russia before and after 1917.
But back to Peter Duck, you see it's a lovely children's tale, perfectly English in its outlook. But what I find strange is the way it's removed from the others in the series. You see the voyage (fantastic and memorable that it must have been - who forgets a waterspout for instance) is never referred to again and the title character, Peter Duck shares a name with one of the children's imaginary friends from an earlier book.

Answer. Your first question reminded me of a conversation I had long, long ago, in London. It was on a Saturday night. I was taking a stroll with a friend; that was some twenty years ago. The streets were thronged. Traders were lined all along the curbs, and their stalls were lit up by small metal tubes, filled with naphtha, or something of that sort. The lights were very pretty. The traffic in the streets was really extraordinary. Everybody was buying or selling.
