Border States: Journal of the Kentucky-Tennessee American Studies Association, No. 7 (1989) GIMME THAT OLD TIME RELIGION: JOHN CROWE RANSOM AND WILL D. CAMPBELL AS CRITICS OF AMERICAN RELIGION
Thomas D. Kennedy
Austin Peay State University
It is a truism to say that the South has been and remains one of the most conservative politically and religiously conservative regions in the nation. Whereas in the past when one spoke of religion in the South the Scopes trial may have come immediately to mind, today it is school textbook controversies or the contemporary version of circuit riding evangelists, the televangelists, mighty and fallen. Among these are religious broadcaster Pat Robertson of Virginia Beach, Jerry Falwell of Lynchburg, Virginia, Oral Roberts of Tulsa, Jim Bakker (not himself a Southerner) and the Fort Mill, South Carolina, based PTL Club, and Jimmy Swaggart of Baton Rouge. Though these names are familiar, it is too seldom recognized that within Southern religion there are trenchant critics who are as loyal to their Southern identity as they are unforgiving of American not just Southern religion.
I want to look briefly at two of these Southern critics of American religion, John Crowe Ransom and Will D. Campbell. Widely disparate in terms of vocations, socio-economic backgrounds, and theological commitments, these two men, separated by three decades, nevertheless think of themselves as Southerners and offer a Southern analysis of the ills of American religion. They engage in identical task, to use Biblical language, the task of naming the powers, the invisible forces of evil which manifest themselves in human institutions. And they are in at least partial agreement as to the identity of these powers which oppress the human spirit. A comparison of these two critics may, thus, provide us with some insight into the character of Southern religion and perhaps into the Southern character itself, if there be such a thing.

John Crowe Ransom, son of a Methodist minister, was born in Pulaski, Tennessee. Rigorous training in the classics enabled him to enter Vanderbilt University at fifteen. He left after two years to teach; returning, he graduated in 1909 with the highest grades in his class. After teaching another year, he went to Christ Church College, Oxford University, as a Rhodes scholar, successfully pursuing a degree that required extensive reading in original Greek and Latin texts. Soon he had an offer from the English Department at Vanderbilt, where he taught from 1914 to 1917. During two years spent with the United States Army field artillery in England and France, First Lieutenant Ransom published Poems About God
In 1920 Ransom married Robb Reavill, a well-educated young woman who shared his interest in sports and games. In the early 1920s discussions of poetry with colleagues and friends led to the formation of a magazine, edited by a group including Ransom, Donald Davidson, and Allen Tate. Ransom found his mature poetic voice in the short lyric poems published regularly in the pages of

Ransom was eager to get back to scholarship and completed a B.A. at Vanderbilt, again graduating valedictorian with membership in Phi Beta Kappa. He was selected Rhodes scholar in 1910 after a year as principal in Lewisburg, and he earned an M.A. with honors in the classics from Christ Church College, Oxford, before traveling Europe and the British Isles. After a year of teaching Latin in Lakeville, Connecticut, he returned to Vanderbilt in 1914 to teach English literature, numbering among his pupils Cleanth Brooks, Donald Davidson, Randall Jarrell, Robert Lowell, Allen Tate, and Robert Penn Warren. Ransom remained active, publishing critical essays on poetry and a collection, Beating the Bushes: Selected Essays, 1941-1970, and serving as visiting professor at Northwest University and Vanderbilt. Despite his shift from pure creative art, by the end of his long life, his reputation had already begun to revert to master poet rather than mentor or critic. He died in his sleep in Gambier, Ohio, on July 3, 1974; his ashes were interred at the Kenyon College Cemetery. Posthumous works include Selected Essays of John Crowe Ransom (1984) and a compendium of letters in 1985.

Eclogue Posted in John Crowe Ransom Poetry JANE SNEED BEGAN IT: My poor John, alas,
Ten years ago, pretty it was in a ring
To run as boys and girls do in the grass -
At that time leap and hollo and skip and sing
Came easily to pass.
And precious little innocents were we.
