Discussing his new novel, Fleshmarket Close , on the BBC's Page Turners (paraphrased): I start with three or four plots and subplots and have no idea how they will eventually connect together. I've got one A4 sheet of notes and that's it - and it's usually just the murder scene.

Ian Rankin's Rebus
The Rebus books have now been translated into 22 languages. Author Ian Rankin talks to Jason Steger about his latest crime novel, Exit Music To view the video interview, click here You are welcome to respond to the following discussion points and where possible we will publish your comments. 1. Exit Music is apparently the last Rebus book. But on the evidence of the book, do you think we will see him again? 2. Do you like that Ian Rankin has written his hero in real time (as opposed to someone like Ruth Rendell's Inspector Wexford, who goes on and on, hardly ageing) and therefore has to retire him from the Scottish police? 3. What role does Edinburgh play in the Rebus books?

- 07:12pm Jan 26, 1999 PST(# of 7) Yes, Rankin's plots can sometimes be involved. But that shouldn't detract seriously from the fact that his books are some of the most "lyrically gritty" works around today. He's sort of the Scottish version of Michael Connelly, and there are multiple comparisons that could be made between Harry Bosch and the equally dark, cynical, and stubborn detective John Rebus. I recently read "Black and Blue," and must rank it as one of the most engaging books I have happened across in months. Peter Shields - 01:10pm Feb 6, 1999 PST(#

Subscribe RSS Ian Rankin: A Life of Crime Posted: October 17, 2007, 8:32 AM by Mark Medley Must Read Booklist In today's National Post , Ian Rankin discusses his newest (and likely final) Inspector Rebus novel, Exit Music . Not everything from the conversation made it into the article, so here are a few, Ampersand-exclusive tidbits. Rankin, a music junkie, has a few Canadian albums in rotation these days. He likes the Cowboy Junkies and Be-Good Tanyas, and calls the recent Polaris Prize-winning album Close to Paradise by Patrick Watson "absolutely fantastic." Now that the Rebus series is done, Rankin can devote his time to other projects. The first thing he's tackling is a one-off series of Hellblazer . CD Comics contacted Rankin and offered him a chance to write for any of their superheroes. Rankin, a life-long comic book fan, was floored by the opportunity: “Suddenly at the age of 47, I’m being offered these things that when I was 13 or 14 or 15 or even 25 I would have died to do. I would have sold my soul to the devil...Whether I'm any good at it or not, I'll find out.” Rankin lives with his family in Edinburgh, a city he first moved to when he was 18. The city has gained a reputation as a literary hotbed, but Rankin says he and other writers aren't overwhelmed by fans: “JK Rowling can go to the local supermarket and nobody bothers her.”

RANKIN RANKS BY DEIRDRE HANNA ian rankin interviewed by alison gordon at the Brigantine Room (York Quay Centre, 235 Queen's Quay West), Wedneday (October 24) at 8 pm; and reading with andrea goldsmith and allen kurzweil at Premiere Dance Theatre (207 Queen's Quay West), Thursday (October 25) at 8 pm. $18. 416-973-4000. scottish mystery writer ian Rankin claims that Edinburgh's high-priced real estate kick-started his best-selling Inspector Rebus series."When I went to university, my parents' home was only 50 kilometres from the campus, so the student accommodation service refused to help me find affordable housing," he says over the phone from the spacious, centrally located flat he was able to buy after his critically acclaimed Black And Blue hit best-sellers lists in 97. "So a friend and I found a room in a motel near a really gruesome housing scheme. The motel was next to a pub called the University Arms, and when I asked the landlord why it wasn't anywhere near campus he said, "If any students ever came in, we'd rip their arms off.'"Rankin, who wrote his first three novels while he was supposed to be doing a PhD thesis, found rich material in this hidden Edinburgh. When he published his first Rebus book, in 87, the Scottish capital also ranked as Europe's AIDS capital, but its public face was still picture-postcard pretty. He racked up enough critical acclaim and awards that in 1990 he quit his day job, as an editor at London monthly Hi Fi Review, but life was lean until 97.

Information on Authors Ian Rankin Scottish born Ian Rankin is the number one best selling crime writer in the U.K. Born in the Kingdom of Fife in 1960, he began his writing career while a student at the University of Edinburgh, from which he graduated in 1983. His first novel, The Flood, was based on his childhood, and was published in 1986 while Mr. Rankin was pursuing his post-graduate studies. This book is highly collectable in Fine condition as it had a very small print run from the publisher, Polygon; which was itself a small independent publishing house owned by the Edinburgh University Students' Association. After graduating from University, Mr. Rankin worked as grape-picker, swineherd, taxman, alcohol researcher, hi-fi journalist and punk musician. Edinburgh Book Festival Review - Ian Rankin
August 17, 2007 After the “outburst” by Val McDermid and subsequent press frenzy since Tuesday evening, this RBS sponsored event with Ian Rankin was never going to be a straight forward affair. The assembled crowd inside the main tent in Charlotte Square Gardens, Edinburgh, had only two things on their lips; the “argument” between two of Scotland’s best known crime writers, and what the title might be of Ian Rankin’s final Inspector Rebus novel. Rankin arrived on stage looking flush, confident, and very cheery. With his trademark briefcase under his arm and spectacles poking out his shirt pocket, he appeared ready for anything, or anyone. The ice that had threatened to chill the evening was broken swiftly by expert host, Magnus Linklater, when he began the proceedings by mentioning the series of short crime stories being run by the Book Festival’s main sponsor, The Times newspaper. Apparently, today’s edition included a story coincidentally called, Revenge Of The Blood Thirsty Lesbians , and was this Rankin’s way of announcing the title of his final Rebus book?

Ian Rankin, interviewed by Peter Robinson Over the years, the NorCal East Bay chapter of Mystery Readers International has had many "At Homes" intimate evenings with favorite mystery writers. We've hosted Anne Perry, Lawrence Block, Sue Grafton, Elizabeth George, Janet LaPierre, Sharan Newman, Laurie King, Rochelle Krich, Carolyn Hart, James Elroy, Steven Saylor, Janet Evanovich and many others. Recently we were entertained by Eddie Muller, author of The Distance , a great noir mystery set in the world of 1940s boxing in San Francisco. These events are held in private homes, and they're similar to Literary Salons. Since so many of our cyber members and friends aren't able to attend these intimate evenings, I thought it would be fun to have a "visiting" author each month interviewed by another "visiting" author. This month we feature Ian Rankin interviewed by Peter Robinson Ian Rankin was born in 1960 in the Scottish village of Cardenden. By the time Ian reached university, he was already a prize-winning poet. While attending Edinburgh University, Ian turned from poetry to the short story. He won several literary prizes, and one short story just grew and grew, becoming his first novel. Ian's first three novels were written while he should have been studying towards a PhD in English Literature. The last of these three was Ian's first "Inspector Rebus" novel, Knots and Crosses Until he was able to support himself full time as a writer, Ian worked at a variety of odd jobs, including alcohol researcher; swineherd; grape-picker; tax collector; and singer in a punk rock band. Currently, Ian divides his time between Edinburgh, London and France, and is married with two sons. His thirteenth Rebus novel
