There will be one detective it will be hard to escape in 2007. From a brand new edition of his first recorded case in March to the publication of his final case in October, there will be television shows, exhibitions, new reading guides to the backlist and even, appropriately, special edition beer and whisky. The detective is of course Inspector John Rebus of Lothian and Borders CID. Rebus has reached retiral age and, despite the attempts of Scottish Parliament MP Helen Eadie to extend the serving age of police officers to guarantee more books, it is time to hang up his handcuffs. 2007 marks the 20th anniversary of the first Rebus novel, "Knots and Crosses", and author Ian Rankin has made long-standing promise to himself to finish the series in its 20th year. "I think I’m just going to treat it as another book. I don’t think I’m going to tie up loose ends like his relationship with Big Ger Cafferty (the Edinburgh gangster who is Rebus’s long-standing nemesis)," Ian revealed. As for Rebus, Ian suspects at the end of the book he will just walk away without a "

Ian Rankin's fictional detective, John Rebus is moody, dogged, and getting older by the day, policing in a city that keeps him constantly challenged. He has been shunted off to a new station and is deprived of a desk as a not-so-subtle hint to take early retirement. His latest case involves the death of a Kurdish asylum seeker, and the skeletons of a woman and child unearthed in a basement of a pub on Fleshmarket Alley. His colleague and friend Siobhan Clarke is dealing with the disappearance of a girl whose sister's rape and subsequent suicide devastated Siobhan many years ago. With startling dexterity Rankin entwines these two cases, as well as presenting a chilling commentary on contemporary immigration problems.

    An Interview with Ian Rankin
Ian Rankin is one of the best crime writers who ever got into the bloody business by accident. On his way to a doctorate in Scottish literature at the University of Edinburgh, he began exploring his dark, baffling city by writing about a grim detective inspector named John Rebus in his debut novel, . Rebus is an unapologetic hard-drinking cop with sharp instincts but a tenacious knack for getting himself in trouble. Through the course of sixteen Rebus novels, Rankin has painted a detailed portrait of a European city at the end of the twentieth century, showing the depths of its humanity by detailing its crime and its effect on its populace. He has earned the Gold Dagger for fiction for Resurrection Men In his latest book, Fleshmarket Close , Inspector Rebus is drawn into the sordid world of illegal housing schemes. An asylum-seeker has been murdered. Nearby, his partner Siobhan is investigating the matter of two skeletons found buried beneath a concrete floor in Fleshmarket Close. , a travel guide for fans of the series, and write new introductions to each book in the series, which celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2007.

Interview with Ian Rankin Jon Ian Rankin Here's part one.If there is some thing you don't feel comfortable answering, just tell me to bugger off and move on to the next one.
For people who may live in a cave and not read any of your books yet, could you give a brief rundown of the series? John Rebus is a police detective working in contemporary Edinburgh and exposing a side of that elegant city which tourists and visitors never see. He's a loner, a fighter, not much of a lover. The job is his only salvation. The city itself is a central character in the series, and beyond that each book tries to focus on one part of modern-day Scotland, so that the series itself becomes a jigsaw, laying out where the country's going, and how it got to where it is. Is there any of Ian Rankin in John Rebus? A bit. The music; the loner; the drinking... But I'm nicer than him; maybe not quite so fucked up. Long time ago, he was a cipher merely, a way of telling my stories, then he started infecting me... now there's more of him in me than ever before. Addictive poison. A lot of authors have had some strange jobs before they get published. What kind of things have you done before you were able to write full time?

    "The Naming of the Dead"
(Reviewed by Chuck Barksdale AUG 1, 2007) The Naming of the Dead and Knots and Crosses The Black Echo Since the setting is in Scotland and not in the United States, the U.S. reader does need to learn a little bit more about the geography and police and political structure to understand some of the references in the book. For example, John Rebus is a Detective Inspector (DI for short), a higher level than DS (Detective Sergeant) Siobhan Clarke. They both work for CID, Lothian and Borders police. The CID is for Criminal Investigation Department and the Lothian and Borders is a region of southeast Scotland that includes the City of Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland (since 1437!) and second largest city with a population of over 400,000. - Return to top of the page - Our Assessment: B+ : taut, entertaining thriller See our review for fuller assessment. The complete review 's Review John Rebus never has (or takes) it easy. In Let it Bleed he's involved in a car crash, faced with a root canal and a possible promotion, and given a bag containing the pieces of a cat. Pretty much all in a day's work for the inspector. Heavy alcohol consumption is one thing Rebus can fall back upon, though here in the only surprise there's also quite a bit of weeping. But it's work that Rebus likes to lose himself in most, and the case here is certainly one he can get worked up about. Let it Bleed begins with multiple suicides: first there's a car chase gone bad, and then a terminally ill man offs himself in very dramatic fashion. Too dramatic fashion, as it turns out: as Rebus later explains:

    Sunday Book Review
    Let It Bleed

By NATALIE MOORE Published: November 19, 2006 Ian Rankin likes to work with “big picture” stories, taking a wide-ranging topic and honing it to play out on the streets of Edinburgh. His most recent Inspector Rebus novel, “Fleshmarket Alley,” wrestled with issues of race and illegal immigration, taking an unsettling look at unscrupulous employers, government detention centers and brutal housing projects. All these subjects confront us in the morning newspaper. Rankin prides himself on his realism, scoffing at the mildewed detective genre of yore. “Forget Miss Marple and arsenic in the crusted port,” he once wrote in the introduction to an anthology of crime stories. “Today’s crime writers are dealing with the real world, real problems, real dramas.” Skip to next paragraph
