Ian Rankin is an award-winning writer of crime fiction and the creator of the Scottish detective John Rebus who has featured in 17 novels to date. Born in Fife , Rankin came from a working class background in a coal-mining town where he says he spent most of his childhood trying to 'look like he fitted in'. In his bedroom he would live out a fantasy life, writing poems, stories and creating strip-cartoons. He admits there are many parallels between himself and Rebus - they lived at the same Edinburgh address, both are fond of a drink and now they even share the same taste in music, though unlike Rebus, Rankin has never smoked. However all that is about to change; Rebus has reached the age of retirement in the police force and Rankin's next novel will be the last in the series. 1. Double Barrell

Welcome to the group page of Britain’s most popular contemporary crime writer.
Ian Rankin was writing lyrics for his own imaginary band as a boy. He was buying T.Rex records at eleven, Alex Harvey and Zappa at fourteen and playing for a band called The Dancing Pigs at seventeen. His taste in music is varied and eclectic and has worked its way into the heart and soul of his novels and their titles – Beggars Banquet Let it Bleed The Falls , to name but a few. Music is a vital subtext to the books, setting tone and pace and providing multiple footnotes for the many devoted music fans amongst his readers. For example check this excerpt from his break-out book Black and Blue (recognise the album anyone?): “Allan Mitchison was in a fridge at the Cowgate. He’d died strapped to a chair. Rebus didn’t know why. Pet Shop Boys: ‘It’s a Sin’. Segue to the Glimmer Twins: ‘Fool to Cry’. Mitchison’s flat hadn’t been so different to Rebus’s own in some respects: under-used, more a base than a home. He downed the rest of his drink, poured another, downed that too, and pulled the duvet off the floor and up to his chin. Another day down.” The title of Rankin’s latest novel

His first Rebus novel, Knots and Crosses (1987) was quickly followed by eleven others including Mortal Causes (1995), The Hanging Garden (1998) and Dead Souls (1999). Black and Blue, considered near faultless by critics, won the Crime Writers' association Gold Dagger in 1997. A collection of short stories, A Good Hanging and Other Stories, appeared in 1992. Published under a variant name, Jack Harvey, are three other novels, Witch Hunt (1993), Bleeding Hearts (1994) and Blood Hunt (1995). Four of the Rebus novels were dramatised for television starring John Hannah; Rankin's book sales exceed 5 million copies in the UK alone; he is translated into 26 languages; there's been a South Bank Show dedicated to him; in 2003, Channel 4 television broadcast his 3-part documentary series on the nature of evil; he has received the OBE for Services to Literature (as well as three honorary doctorates).

    AN RANKIN
"I grew up in a small coal-mining town in central Scotland. I was always interested in stories. Even though the town had no book stores (and my parents were not great readers), I made full use of the local library. It was mind-boggling to me that (at the age of 11 or 12) I could not gain access to a movie theatre to see such classics as 'The Godfather', 'A Clockwork Orange' or 'Straw Dogs', yet no one stopped me from borrowing these titles from my library. Books seemed to have about them a whiff of the illicit and the dangerous. That was all the encouragement I needed. I went to university in 1978, joined a punk band (on vocals), and continued to write a lot of song lyrics and poems. However, I found that my poems were actually 'telling stories', and so started to write short stories. A few of these found publication and even won some awards. Then one story raged out of control and became my first novel. It was never published, but that didn't matter: I was now a novelist. I stumbled on Detective Inspector John Rebus by accident while attempting to write an update of 'Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde': Rebus would be my Jekyll, his Hyde a character from his past. Along the way, I discovered that a cop is a good 'tool', a way of looking at contemporary society, its rights and wrongs. Rebus, I decided, would stick around. Meantime, I finished unviersity, moved to London for four years (where I worked first as a college secretary, later as a hi-fi/audio journalist), then rural France for six years. Both my sons were born in France. By the time the oldest had reached school age, we'd decided to move back to Scotland. I now live and work in Edinburgh, and the Rebus novels have gone from strength to strength in terms of sales and recognition.

"What I didn't know at the time was that this police station was investigating a child abduction, which was very similar to what I was describing; eventually, seven kids were taken and killed. These cops see a lunatic come into the station with this spurious story about writing a novel and they immediately cast me as a suspect." Being Ian Rankin has become hard work. Between dashing about on international publicity tours, speaking before crime writers' associations and struggling with a three-part BBC-TV cop drama (set in a fictional fishing community north of Aberdeen, Scotland), the author finds less and less free time nowadays to devote to the continuing adventures of Edinburgh Detective Inspector John Rebus. However, it's his Rebus books the newest of which, Set In Darkness , is due out in Great Britain in February that have brought Rankin, at just under 40 years of age, extraordinary acclaim. On both sides of the Atlantic.
