He's referred to himself as "the world's biggest private eye nut," and certainly, more than anyone else since Hammett, Chandler and Macdonald, Robert Randisi has fought to ensure that P.I. fiction gets some respect. No, not just through his contributions to the genre in the form of his fictional eyes creations of Miles Jacoby Henry Po or Nick Delvecchio , as entertaining and significant as they may be, but through his tireless promotion of the genre through his numerous non-fiction articles, his co-founding and editing, with Ed Gorman , of Mystery Scene magazine, and most importantly of all, through his founding of The Private Eye Writers of America in 1981. With its annual Shamus Awards , which recognize excellence in the genre, its encouragement of young writers, through a contest run in conjunction with St. Martins Press

Critical Praise
Robert J. Randisi

OBERT J. RANDISI is the founder of the Private Eye Writers of America and the author of numerous mysteries. Research for his latest book The Picasso Flop was based on personal experience. The author frequents casinos across the country, and goes to Las Vegas often, and recommends the Bellagio and Mandalay Bay highly, as well as the Venetian and the Rio. His favorite books stretch from age 15 to present. He Enjoys the works of Ross Macdonald, John D. McDonald and Dick Francis quite a bit. Specifically, Ross Macdonald's The Moving Target was made into the Paul Newman film Harper. I saw the movie first, which sent me searching for the book and started reading and writing hardboiled fiction from that point on. The Picasso Flop is decidedly less hardboiled than a lot of my other work. Current authors I read faithfully are Michael Connelly, Peter Robinson, Ian Rankin, Mark Billingham, and Stuart Kaminsky's Lou Fonesca series. I read A LOT so there are too many to keep mentioning.

First, I want to thank you for taking the time to chat with us Bob.
Magnificent movies on tape while I worked on a western. Also some old Warner Bros. westerns like Cheyenne and Maverick Sunset Strip or Hawaiian Eye tapes, maybe some British mysteries or movies, like Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy , or American films like Harper or Chinatown
You created The Gunsmith series, which is published under the pseudonym J.R. Roberts. It first appeared in 1982, and there are currently somewhere in the neighborhood of 320 books in the series. Have you written each book in the series? If so, how do you keep yourself interested in the stories and the characters?
Actually, back in 1983 when Berkley bought out Charter books they wanted to bring in a couple of other writers so we could build an inventory and get about a year ahead. So there were a few years there where I did 8 a year instead of twelve. Also, while two other writers were doing some

The Amazing Randisi
A couple of months ago, I received a very polite email from author Robert J. Randisi . It read "Found your site and enjoyed it" (woohoo!) "but was disappointed to see that I was not in your list of authors." (doh!) I quickly rectified that omission, and Mr. Randisi (or "Bob", as he's called by people who actually know him) graciously agreed to an email interview. So, without further ado... Bleeker Books: What writers did you read when you were growing up? What were the influences on your writing? How did you become such a big fan of PI fiction? Robert J. Randisi: I read all of the classic mystery writers in my teens: Hammett Chandler , Christie, Sayers, Carr, Queen. I became a P.I. fan from watching the Warner bros. P.I. series of the 50'sSunset Strip, Surfside 6, Hawaiian Eye and Bourbon Street Beat. The biggest influence on my becoming a P.I. writers, though, goes to Paul Newman, Lew Archer and Ross Macdonald . When I was 15 I saw Paul Newman in Harper . After the movie I went out and got Macdonald's The Moving Target on which the film was based and discovered that "Harper" was actually "Lew Archer," and I was hooked. I read all of Macdonald, and then kept reading P.I. fiction
