In a brilliant rejoinder and an inspired act of literary invention, Alice Randall explodes the world created in Margaret Mitchell"s famous 1936 novel, the work that more than any other has defined our image of the antebellum South. Imagine simply that the black characters peopling that world were completely different, not egregious, one-dimensional stereotypes but fully alive, complex human beings. And then imagine, quite plausibly, that at the center of this world moves an illegitimate mulatto woman, and that this woman, Cynara, Cinnamon, or Cindy beautiful and brown gets to tell her story. Cindy is born into a world in which she is unacknowledged by her plantation-owning father and passed over by her mother in favor of her white charges. Sold off like so much used furniture, she eventually makes her way back to Atlanta to take up with a prominent white businessman, only to leave him for an aspiring politician of her own color. Moving from the Deep South to the exhilarating freedom of Reconstruction Washington, with its thriving black citizenry of statesmen, professionals, and strivers of every persuasion, Cindy experiences firsthand the promise of the new era at its dizzying peak, just before it begins to slip away.

Abstract: In this paper I re-evaluate the merits of Margaret Mitchell’s historical novel, Gone with the Wind. Though many dismiss Mitchell’s novel as a romance, an implicitly (or explicitly) racist condemnation of Northern aggression, and/or a romanticization of the ante-bellum South, I argue that the novel is in fact an insightful, critical, and complex work with philosophical import and political relevance. I draw attention to Mitchell's use of the German concept of the Gotterdammerung (the twilight of the gods) and to her implicit criticism of those who would wish to maintain obsolete traditions in a new world. Best understood as an intelligent, philosophically aware, immanently critical allegory about the rise and fall of civilizations, Gone with the Wind has much to teach us about the foundation of Southern national identity, the South’s historical memory of the Civil War, and what it takes to survive a great social upheaval and to prosper even after the twilight of the gods.

Alice Randall, author of 'The Wind Done Gone'
CNN Moderator: What are the main differences between your book and "Gone With the Wind?" Alice Randall: My book is a parody of "Gone With the Wind." "Gone With the Wind" in certain ways divides the nation into white and black. My book unites the nation. Ultimately, most of the characters in my book turn out to be black, which is a way to make that line invisible. So, my book is a critique of "Gone With the Wind" in the form of a parody. MORE STORIES 'Wind Done Gone' hits stores Question from chat room: What sorts of reactions have you had from readers with respect to your book? Alice Randall: I've had some wonderful reactions. I've received letters from Maine to Georgia, and phone calls from people in Chicago on a Sunday morning. I received a call from a woman who said she's been waiting all of her life to read this book. By that, I took her to mean that she had been waiting all her life to hear someone rebuke "Gone With the Wind" in printed prose. CNN Moderator: What is the current status of the legal battle?
