A Y N R A N D : A R E S O U R C E G U I D E T Like libertarianism, Objectivism is represented on thousands of Web sites. The Ayn Rand Foundation is the official repository of teachings, commentaries, and documents perpetuating her philosophy. During most of her professional career, Rand mentored Nathaniel Branden, but the two had a nasty public falling-out late in the author's life. One result was a fair amount of emnity between Rand followers and those who sympathized with Branden (and his wife Barbara, also a Rand acolyte). A good deal of this dispute leaks over to the Web, including frequent references to Barbara Branden's surprisingly saccharine Rand biography, "The Passion of Ayn Rand." In a public letter in October 1968, Rand explained at great length the reasons for the split. You can read the Brandens' answers from links provided at Russel Hanneken's informative site One of the most relevant sites to the discussion of Objectivism and Libertarianism is Peter Saint Andre's essay , "Why I Am A LIbertarian," which first appeared in the magazine "Full Context" and which you can read online. Here is a sampling of other Web sites put together by friends and enemies of Objectivism. Two good Rand jumpstations (collections of links that will take you to other sites) are at http://www.mtsu.edu/~m_c_000b/objmat.html and http://www.uccs.edu/~kmfreckl/objectivism.html.

The Sociology of the Ayn Rand Cult
by Murray N. Rothbard Written in 1972, this was the first piece of Rand revisionism from the libertarian standpoint. It should be clear at this point in history that an ideological cult can adopt the same features as the more overtly religious cult, even when the ideology is explicitly atheistic and anti-religious. That the cults of Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin, Trotsky, and Mao are religious in nature, despite the explicit atheism of the latter, is by now common knowledge. The adoration of the cult founder and leader, the hierarchical structure, the unswerving loyalty, the psychological (and when in command of State power, the physical) sanctions are all too evident. The Exoteric and the Esoteric Every religious cult has two sets of differing and distinctive creeds: the exoteric and the esoteric. The exoteric creed is the official, public doctrine, the creed which attracts the acolyte in the first place and brings him into the movement as a rank-and-file member. The quite different creed is the unknown, hidden agenda, a creed which is only known to its full extent by the top leadership, the "high priests" of the cult. The latter are the keepers of the Mysteries of the cult.

Neither life nor happiness can be achieved by the pursuit of irrational whims. Just as man is free to attempt to survive by any random means, as a parasite, a moocher or a looter, but not free to succeed at it beyond the range of the moment - so he is free to seek his happiness in any irrational fraud, any whim, any delusion, any mindless escape from reality, but not free to succeed at it beyond the range of the moment nor to escape the consequences. Ayn Rand A desire presupposes the possibility of action to achieve it; action presupposes a goal which is worth achieving. Ayn Rand A government is the most dangerous threat to man's rights: it holds a legal monopoly on the use of physical force against legally disarmed victims. If you try to find out about the legacy of Ayn Rand, your search engine will probably direct you first to aynrand.org , a website run by the Ayn Rand Institute in California. The ARI was founded in 1985, three years after Rand’s death, by Leonard Peikoff, her friend and heir. It runs a newsletter called Impact and, via the Objectivist Academic Center, undergraduate courses in the Randian world vision. Objectivism was the name Rand gave to the system of philosophy she developed in a 30,000-word speech that took her two years to write and which forms the centrepiece of her bestselling novel, Atlas Shrugged (1957). It was later elaborated in speeches, lectures and interviews, in the six non-fiction books Rand published in her lifetime, and a further dozen-odd published after her death. Objectivism is also promulgated by the Objectivist Center in Washington DC, until recently run by David Kelley, the author of

The 1999 addition to the Literary Arts stamp series honors Ayn Rand, the author of The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged . Born Alissa Rosenbaum in St. Petersburg, Russia, Ayn Rand came to the U.S. in 1926 at the age of 21, and later became a U.S. citizen. Rand believed that a productive society is the result of individual freedom and effort. Her philosophy influenced all of her books and made her a controversial but respected author. The stamp art was illustrated by Nicholas Gaetano, who also illustrated book jackets for several recent editions of Ayn Rand’s books.
