  • Allan Ramsay 1684(?)–1758
    Scottish poet and editor.
    INTRODUCTION
Through his own poetry and his editions of works by earlier writers, Ramsay played a major role in reviving the Scots poetic tradition that had languished since the late sixteenth century. Although he wrote both in English and in vernacular Scots, he is most remembered for his verses in Scots, which demonstrated the viability of the Scots language and of traditional Scottish genres and verse forms as vehicles for contemporary literary expression. He is considered an important predecessor of Robert Burns and a precursor of the Romantic movement of the later eighteenth century.
    Biographical Information
    Major Works
Ramsay's first poems were apparently written for the Easy Club, including his first poem in Scots, "Elegy on Maggie Johnston, who died Anno 1711." Over the next several years, his poems in Scots and English circulated in the form of broadsides and small collections. His reputation as a poet spread with his publication in 1721 of a collection of his verse which he issued to nearly five hundred subscribers, including a number of aristocrats and prominent literary figures, merchants, and professionals. Ramsay's poetry, written in both Scots and English, included work in a wide variety of genres, but he was particularly known for his depictions—sometimes humorous, sometimes sentimental—of Scottish rural and urban "low life." His pastoral drama

Next to Sir Joshua Reynolds and Thomas Gainsborough he was the outstanding British portraitist of his period, and at his best he rivals them in quality. In addition he was an accomplished writer who was friendly with some of the leading literary figures of the day, notably Samuel Johnson Ramsay was born in Edinburgh on October 2, 1713. His father, also called Allan Ramsay , was a distinguished poet, and the boy grew up in a bookish atmosphere. He had a good education and became an excellent linguist, learning French and Latin at school and later adding German, Italian, and Greek to his skills. From an early age he also showed a talent for art and when only 15 he made a drawing of his father (National Portrait Gallery, Edinburgh) that was later engraved and used as the frontispiece for various editions of his poems. In 1729 Ramsay began studying at the short-lived Academy of St Luke in Edinburgh, and soon afterwards worked in London in the studio of the Swedish-born portraitist Hans Hysing. From 1732 to 1736 he worked independently in Edinburgh, and then made his first visit abroad, from 1736 to 1738, going via Paris to Italy. There he met some of the leading painters of the day, including

    Ramsay, Allan
    (b. 1713, Edinburgh, d. 1784, Dover) Scottish portrait painter, active mainly in London. He was the outstanding portraitist there from about 1740 to the rise of Reynolds in the mid 1750s. Ramsay studied in London, in Rome, and in Naples (under Solimena), and when in 1739 he settled in London he brought a cosmopolitan air to British portrait painting. His portraits of women have a decidedly French grace (The Artist's Wife, National Gallery, Edinburgh, c. 1755) and in this field he continued to be a serious rival to Reynolds , who was upset when Ramsay was appointed Painter-in-Ordinary to George III in 1760.
Ramsay, however, gradually gave up painting during the 1760s to devote himself to his other interests. He was the son of Allan Ramsay, the poet, and inherited his father's literary bent. Political pamphleteering, classical archeology (he revisited Rome in 1754-57), and conversation took up much of his later years. He was successful in literary circles and Dr Samuel Johnson said of him: 'You will not find a man in whose conversation there is more instruction, more information, and more elegance.' Works
