"O eloquent, just and mightie Death, whom none could advise,
thou hast perswaded."

Sir Walter Raleigh
The History of the World
SIR WALTER RALEIGH
TO LADY ELIZABETH RALEIGH
"I am but dust..."
At his execution in 1618 in the Tower of London, Sir Walter Raleigh asked to see the axe that was to behead him and said, "This is a sharp Medicine, but it is a Physician for all Diseases." As was common at the time, his head was embalmed and presented to his wife. She apparently carried it with her at all times until she died 29 years later at the age of 82. You shall now receive (my deare wife) my last words in these last lines. My love I send you that you may keep it when I am dead, and my councell that you may remember it when I am no more. I would not by my will present you with sorrowes (dear Besse) let them go to the grave with me and be buried in the dust. And seeing that it is not Gods will that I should see you any more in this life, beare it patiently, and with a heart like thy selfe. First, I send you all the thankes which my heart can conceive, or my words can rehearse for your many travailes, and care taken for me, which though they have not taken effect as you wished, yet my debt to you is not the lesse: but I pay it I never shall in this world.

Until the end of 1988, the Club's primary range facilities were located near Knightdale, just east of Raleigh. However, due to the development in the area and a desire by club members to expand the facilities, the Club relocated to it's present location approximately 24 miles north of the Crabtree Valley Shopping Center. The club owns 143 acres on which basic pistol, rifle and shotgun ranges have been constructed. Future construction projects include a 300 yard high power rifle range currently under development, separate trap ranges, a bullseye pistol range, an archery field as well as a clubhouse, camping areas and hiking trails. The goal of the Club is to develop one of the best private shooting sports facilities in the State and possible anywhere in the eastern United States.

Who is Sir Walter Raleigh?
More than a friend to Elizabeth I, and courageous explorer of the New World, Sir Walter Raleigh had a dark side, and lived on the edge much of the time, until his beheading by an angry Crown in 1618.
Sir Walter Raleigh’s adventurous life in 16th century England focuses on two pivotal experiences: his prominence at Court, particularly that of Elizabeth I, and his seafaring explorations of the Americas. Born in 1552 in Hayes Barton, Devonshire, England, Raleigh went to fight in the French War of Religions on the Huguenot side at the age of roughly 15 or 16, then later studied at Oriel College in Oxford, and at the Middle Temple law college. He took up arms again in 1580, this time against the Irish rebels for independence in Munster. Always an outspoken man, Raleigh gained the notice of the Queen around this time for his unabashed criticism of English policy in Ireland, and soon he came under closer scrutiny of the Court. Apparently his candid ways were gilded with charm, however, and he soon became a favorite of the Queen, who knighted him in 1585. As Elizabeth’s reigning favorite, he began to earn royal favors including vast amounts of land in Munster, wealth and influential positions, one of which was as the monopoly holder of licenses for ale of wines, export of broadcloths and warden of the Cornish tin mines. So powerful was Raleigh at this time that it was often assumed Elizabeth would marry him, for there seemed no favor too large for her to grant him. He became vice-admiral of Devon and Cornwall and had a seat in Parliament. He was ultimately captain of the queen’s guard, a position that many consider may have put him close enough to the Queen that more personal favors on her part were also part of his benefits. Apparently Sir Walter’s gallant and chivalrous ways extended to more than bridging a watery gutter for passing noble ladies in the streets of London.

SIR walter raleigh (c. 15521618), British explorer, poet and historian, was born probably in 1552, though the date is not quite certain.
http://www.1911encyclopedia.org/Sir_Walter_Raleigh
Sir Walter Raleigh
From LoveToKnow 1911
SIR WALTER RALEIGH c. 1552-1618), British explorer, poet and historian, was born probably in 1552, though the date is not quite certain. His father, Walter Raleigh of Fardell, in the parish of Cornwood, near Plymouth, was a country gentleman of old family, but of reduced estate. Walter Raleigh the elder was three times married. His famous son was the child of his third marriage with Catherine , daughter of Sir Philip Champernown of Modbury, and widow of Otho Gilbert of Compton. By her first marriage she had three sons, John , Humphrey and Adrian Gilbert. Mr. Raleigh had been compelled to give up living in his own house of Fardell. His son was born at the farmhouse of Hayes near the head of Budleigh Salterton Bay, on the coast of Devonshire between Exmouth and Sidmouth . The name is written with a diversity exceptional even in that age. Sir Walter, his father, and a halfbrother used different forms. The spelling Raleigh was adopted by Sir Walter's widow, and has been commonly used, though there has been a tendency to prefer "Ralegh" in recent times. It was almost certainly pronounced "Rawley." In 1568 he was entered as a commoner of Oriel College

Place for gathering and meeting Painted in gilt above the mantel of the Raleigh Tavern's Apollo Room is the motto "Hilaritas Sapientiae et Bonae Vitae Proles." It may be translated "Jollity, the offspring of wisdom and good living." Established about 1717, the Raleigh's namesake was Sir Walter Raleigh, who had attempted the first colonization of Virginia in 1585. His lead bust stood above the door and, during Publick Times in April and October, planters and merchants from all over the colony passed beneath it on the way to the court. Some adjourned to play dice in the gaming room or to feast in the dining room. Festive balls held here Often there were balls; colonial Virginians loved to dance. Thomas Jefferson, a love-struck student at the College of William and Mary, attended one with Rebecca Burwell (he called her "Belinda") on October 6, 1763. As he described it in a letter to his friend John Page, young Tom made something of a fool of himself: "In the most melancholy fit that ever any poor soul was, I sit down to write to you. Last night as merry as agreeable company and dancing with Belinda in the Apollo could make me, I never could have thought the succeeding Sun would have seen me so wretched as I now am. I was prepared to say a great deal. I had dressed up in my own mind such thoughts as occurred to me, in as moving language as I know how, and expected to have performed in a tolerably creditable manner. But, good God! when I had an opportunity of venting them, a few broken sentences, uttered in great disorder, and interrupted with pauses of uncommon length, were the too visible marks of my strange confusion."
