In 1578 he joined his half-brother, Sir Humphrey Gilbert, in pirate attacks on Spanish treasure ships. Two years later he helped put down the Catholic rising in Ireland. Raleigh's military achievements was recognized by Elizabeth who granted him estates and a licence to export woollen broadcloths. In 1585 he was elected to the House of Commons and appointed Vice-Admiral of Devon and Cornwall. In 1584 Raleigh went on an expedition to America and created a settlement on Roanoke Island in North Carolina. On his return he introduced tobacco and potatoes to England. In 1587 Raleigh moved to Ireland where he had an estate in Munster. Soon after his return to England in 1592 he was arrested and charged with having an affair with Bessy Throckmorton, one of Elizabeth's maids of honour.

Walter Raleigh* was born on his father’s leased estate at Hays Burton, England. He attended Oxford, volunteered for service with French Huguenots in 1569 and later studied law in London. In 1578, he joined forces with his half-brother Humphrey Gilbert to organize an exploratory venture in North America. However, the ships were prevented from sailing by a series of storms and eventually the expedition was cancelled. This failed effort was important to Raleigh because it had planted a seed within his mind - he was determined to establish English colonies in the New World. Raleigh’s reputation was enhanced by service at Munster during the Irish rebellion (1580). That contribution, coupled with immense personal charm, led to a close friendship with Elizabeth I and knighthood in 1585. Raleigh further increased his standing by helping to expose a plot by Catholic elements to depose the queen in favor of Mary, Queen of Scots. During the mid-1580s, Raleigh began efforts to establish permanent settlements in North America in an area he thoughtfully named Virginia, to honor his patroness the Virgin Queen. The culmination of these labors was the ill-fated Lost Colony on

6. The Life Of Sir Walter Ralegh (1552-1618) [or Walter Raleigh]
Biography of Sir walter Ralegh, Renaissance Poet, Explorer, and Courtier.
http://www.luminarium.org/renlit/raleghbio.htm
SIR WALTER RALEGH (or Raleigh), British explorer, poet and historian, was born probably in 1552, though the date is not quite certain. His father, Walter Ralegh of Fardell, in the parish of Cornwood, near Plymouth, was a country gentleman of old family, but of reduced estate. Walter Ralegh the elder was three times married. His famous son was the child of his third marriage with Catherine, daughter of Sir Philip Champernown of Modbury, and widow of Otho Gilbert of Compton. By her first marriage she had three sons, John, Humphrey and Adrian Gilbert. Mr. Ralegh had been compelled to give up living in his own house of Fardell. His son was born at the farmhouse of Hayes near the head of Budleigh Salterton Bay, on the coast of Devonshire between Exmouth and Sidmouth.
The name is written with a diversity exceptional even in that age. Sir Walter, his father, and a halfbrother used different forms. The spelling "Raleigh" was adopted by Sir Walter's widow, and has been commonly used, though there has been a tendency to prefer "Ralegh" in recent times. It was almost certainly pronounced "Rawley." In 1568 he was entered as a commoner of Oriel College, Oxford, but he took no degree, and his residence was brief. In 1569 he followed his cousin Henry Champernown, who took over a body of English volunteers to serve with the French Huguenots. From a reference in his History of the World it has been supposed that he was present at the battle of Jarnac (13th of March 1569), and it has been asserted that he was in Paris during the Massacre of St Bartholomew in 1572. Nothing, however, is known with certainty of his life till February 1575, when he was resident in the Temple. During his trial in 1603 he declared that he had never studied the law, but that his breeding had been "wholly gentleman, wholly soldier."

Sir Walter Raleigh
The Discovery of Guiana, 1595
Introductory Note Sir Walter Raleigh may be taken as the great typical figure of the age of Elizabeth. Courtier and statesman, soldier and sailor, scientist and man of letters, he engaged in almost all the main lines of public activity in his time, and was distinguished in them all. His father was a Devonshire gentleman of property, connected with many of the distinguished families of the south of England. Walter was born about 1552 and was educated at Oxford. He first saw military service in the Huguenot army in France in 1569, and in 1578 engaged, with his half-brother, Sir Humphrey Gilbert, in the first of his expeditions against the Spaniards. After some service in Ireland, he attracted the attention of the Queen, and rapidly rose to the perilous position of her chief favorite. With her approval, he fitted out two expeditions for the colonization of Virginia, neither of which did his royal mistress permit him to lead in person, and neither of which succeeded in establishing a permanent settlement. After about six years of high favor, Raleigh found his position at court endangered by the rivalry of Essex, and in 1592, on returning from convoying a squadron he had fitted out against the Spanish, he was thrown into the Tower by the orders of the Queen, who had discovered an intrigue between him and one of her ladies whom he subsequently married. He was ultimately released, engaged in various naval exploits, and in 1594 sailed for South America on the voyage described in the following narrative.

SIR WALTER RALEIGH
Renaissance Man
INTRODUCTION
Sir Walter Raleigh was perhaps the most colorful personality of the Renaissance.
BACKGROUND
Sir Walter Raleigh was born in Hayes, Devonshire. This was the beginning of an incredible life. Sir Walter Raleigh later attended Oxford but did not finish there. Instead he studied law in England. He also did not finish there. Instead he went on an expedition of piracy with his brother Sir Humprey Gilhar in 1578. In 1580, Raleigh became the captain of the army of Ireland and suppressed a rebellion.
Ten years later, in 1590, Raleigh was at the height of his power. By this time he was known as one of the dashing personalities of England. He had been knighted and was one of the queen's favorites. He was so popular with the queen he was granted 12,000 acres of land in the new world.
A short time later his power dropped severely. He lost the queen's favor by marrying one of her maids of honor. In 1603 things were even worse. The queen died and the new king charged Raleigh with treason. After the king locked him in the London Tower for twelve years, he finally convinced the king to let him free by promising him the gold of Spain. The king had ordered him not to engage the Spanish in war but Raleigh's son attacked a village and was killed. Upon return to England Raleigh was executed for disobeying orders. In 1618 Sir Walter Raleigh was beheaded but he faced his fate bravely. He joked with his executioner and even gave the signal for the axe to fall... After all he was a Renaissance man.

Sir Walter Raleigh.
His background.
He was born in 1552, during a time when his father leased Hayes Barton from the Duke family of Otterton. He was half brother to Sir Humphrey and Sir John Gilbert, from his mother's first marriage. He had a brother, Carew, and sister, Margaret. The spelling used in those days was rather erratic and thus "Raleigh" is just one of the (over 40) ways in which his surname was written. He used numerous of these spellings, with "Rawleigh", "Ralegh" and "Rawley" being more often used than the currently accepted version. His name was pronounced "raw lie" and it is said he is never known to have used the modern "Raleigh" spelling. He is known to have attended church in East Budleigh. The nearby sea-side town of Budleigh Salterton is the setting for the painting "The boyhood of Raleigh" by Millais (on show at the Tate Gallery, although from May 20th. to September 30th., 2000 it will be in an exhibition about Raleigh at the

Is his name properly spelled RawleygheM as he signed it once in 1587, Rauley as he signed it until 1583, or Ralegh as he signed it more or less consistently from 1584 until his death in 1618? The spelling we prefer today is one he may never have used. How should his name be pronounced-rawly or rolly? Both questions and their several answers are appropriate to any consideration of this well-known, yet oddly enigmatic man. One of the great streams of events in modern history has been the expansion of western Europe, which carried European influence all over the world and brought the influence of distant places back to Europe in the backwash. Sir Walter Ralegh played a pivotal role in the expansion of England into the New World. We know little about his birth or childhood, other than that he was born about 1554 at Hayes Barton in Devonshire. In 1569 he was in France fighting for the Huguenots. In 1572 he was at Oriel College, Oxford; and 1575 he was at the Middle Temple, one of the Inns of Court. His career was exciting-fighting for his fellow Protestants in France; exploring the New World with his half-

Sir Walter Raleigh was one of the grand scalawags of the Elizabethan Age. He made a name for himself fighting the Irish at Munster; later he was introduced at court and became a favorite of Queen Elizabeth I . Known for his wit and womanizing, Raleigh was in and out of Elizabeth's favor. (According to a famous legend he once laid his plush and expensive cloak over a mud puddle so that the Queen's feet would not be dirtied; the legend has long been disputed, but it may actually be true.) He also organized expeditions to the new world, popularized tobacco, and found time to write poetry on the side. Raleigh was not a favorite of Elizabeth's successor, James I , who kept Sir Walter imprisoned in the Tower of London for years and finally had him beheaded in 1618. Extra credit : After Raleigh's execution, his head was embalmed and returned to his wife... Some sources say on the day he was beheaded Raleigh was granted a last smoke of tobacco establishing the tradition of giving a prisoner a last cigarette before execution. Other leading figures of Raleigh's era include author William Shakespeare , sea captain Sir Francis Drake and astronomer Johannes Kepler ... Other beheaded English citizens include Anne Boleyn Lady Jane Grey and Sir Thomas More Raleigh joins John the Baptist in the loop

Sir Walter 'the Unfortunate' Raleigh
Walter Raleigh (or perhaps Ralegh) was born in the farmhouse of Hayes near Budleigh Salterton Bay . He apparently did nothing of interest until 1580, when he tried to make up for his slow start by being twice arrested for dueling
Of course, his big claim to fame these days is the story that he once gallantly threw his cloak over a mud puddle so that Queen Elizabeth I wouldn't get her feet dirty. Like most of these nifty stories, it's almost certainly wrong. He actually had another legend as well, much less well-known these dayshe supposedly used a diamond to scrawl verses on a window pane in order to get the Queen's attention
Whether it was because of the verses or not, Walter became Sir Walter in 1584, which just goes to show you that a prison record doesn't always have to hold you back. The Queen chose him as a favorite and showered him with gifts of land and money, but, strangely, never gave him any high office . In return, he introduced tobacco from the New World to England, earning the gratitude of physicians everywhere on the British Isles.

Walter Raleigh (c.1552 - 1618)
Raleigh was an adventurer, courtier to Elizabeth I, navigator, author and poet. M Walter Raleigh (also spelt Ralegh) was born into a well-connected gentry family at Hayes Barton in Devon in around 1552. He attended Oxford University for a time, fought with the Huguenots in France and later studied law in London. In 1578 Raleigh sailed to America with explorer Sir Humphrey Gilbert, his half brother. This expedition may have stimulated his plan to found a colony there. In 1585, he sponsored the first English colony in America on Roanoke Island (now North Carolina). The colony failed and another attempt at colonisation also failed in 1587. Raleigh has been credited with bringing potatoes and tobacco back to Britain, although both of these were already known via the Spanish. However, Raleigh did help to make smoking popular at court. Raleigh first came to the attention of Queen Elizabeth I in 1580, when he went to Ireland to help suppress an uprising in Munster. He soon became a favourite of the queen, and was knighted and appointed captain of the Queen's Guard (1587). He became an MP in 1584 and received extensive estates in Ireland.

Raleigh (or Ralegh ), Walter ( c.
The English courtier and explorer Walter Raleigh with his eldest son in 1602. A favourite of Elizabeth I until his marriage to one of her ladies-in-waiting, he was later accused of conspiring against James I and was imprisoned in the Tower of London from 1603 until 1616. Raleigh was released to make a second voyage in search of El Dorado in South America, but this ended in failure and on his return to England he was executed. Born in Devon, England, Raleigh became a confidant of Queen Elizabeth I and was knighted in 1584. He led a gold-seeking expedition to the Orinoco River in South America in 1595 (described in his Discoverie of Guiana of 1596).
