Finding-Aid for the Gass Papers [00051]
Collection Description
Papers, ca. 1948-1981 ca. 5400 items  Access: Open  Gass' fiction has received critical praise from the outset of his career. His first novel, Omensetter's Luck (1966), was heralded by critics. Richard Gilman, in his review of the book for The New Republic , went so far as to call it "the most important work of fiction by an American in this literary generation," and his subsequent work has received similar critical response. Gass is equally important as a critic and his theory of fiction manifests itself in both his criticism and his fiction. He is clearly aligned with that group of authors and theorists who view language and writing as the ultimate subject matter of literature. Thus plot, narrative, character, etc, the traditional concerns of fiction writers are used by Gass to explore the nature of language, as one might expect from an author whose best known critical works are The World Within the Word (1978) and Habitations of the Word (1985). In 1995 he published

HYGIEIA, OF PERSPECTIVE
BY CARL RAKOSI
AIE! There's the greenwood fern and the open woods and the smell of hay and the eye of a frog and a fern signature left in a coal and there is fern by analogy, a most ancient weed. "IN THY SLEEP/LITTLE SORROWS SIT AND WEEP" In the night a little crow whose wing was broken lay on the ground and cried out. Strigidae the owl protector of grain heard and glided soundless nearby to a low branch. Straight ahead he looked like a man engraved as on an ancient measuring cup or seated at the knee of Michelangelo's Night waiting motionless erect. Not two weeks old the crow slept. An hour passed. A feather stirred. instantly the great head swivelled and the bird of prey leaped, spearing and carried off the body to a distant tree stump. Again he waited listening. The implacable beak then grasped it by the head and gulped it down. Three times he swallowed, spitting out the crow bones, fur and feathers. Then the great bird silent on Egyptian tombs blinked preened and hooted.

Carl Rakosi 1903-2004
John Tranter has passed on this sad news from Tom Devanney:
Poet Carl Rakosi died on Friday afternoon June 25 at the age of 100, after a series of strokes, in his home in San Francisco. He was with his family and they were reading Mark Twain and listening to music when he died.
Jen Hofer writes that Carl's last words, or nearly-last words were these:
You can read a poem by Carl (with a photo) in the very first issue of Jacket magazine, from 1997. Jacket will publish more material, including a conversation between Carl Rakosi and Tom Devanney, in Jacket

Broken/Open Shortlisted - Kenneth Slessor Poetry Prize 2006; The Age Poetry Book of the Year 2005
Available now from Salt Publishing "The result is poetry of unsettling mystery and beauty. ... [t]he art of this book lies in the precision with which it renders the glassiness of things, the shatterings, without having to say so - passionate and parodic at once, as cool as all get out."
