Ann Radcliffe will always be remembered as the great exponent of Gothic fiction. Though Jane Austen would parody her novels in Northanger Abbey (1818), Radcliffe's wild, often bleak, landscapes, dark threatening men, and gothic mysteries lived on in the works of Keats, Mary Shelley, the Brontes, Dickens, and Bram Stoker and many others. Contemporary readers and modern day critics have variously dubbed Radcliffe the 'Mistress of Udolpho', 'The Great Enchantress', and the 'Mother of the Gothic', but these are misleadingly exotic titles to bestow upon such a private person with such a prosaic life history. According to The Edinburgh Review (May 1823), 'She never appeared in public, nor mingled in private society, but kept herself apart, like the sweet bird that sings its solitary notes, shrouded and unseen'. In fact, so little was known about Radcliffe's life in the nineteenth century that Christina Rossetti abandoned a projected biography due to a lack of material. ^ Top In 1787 Ann married William Radcliffe, a hardworking Oxford law graduate who became part-editor and owner of

Ann Radcliffe
ANN RADCLIFFE was born in 1764, the daughter of a London tradesman. In 1786 she married William Radcliffe, later the manager of The English Chronicle. She set her first novel, The Castles of Athlin and Dunbayne (1789), in Scotland, and it received little critical or public attention. Using more exotic locations in Europe, notably the 'sublime' landscapes of the Alps and Pyrenees, she wrote four more novels within ten years: A Sicilian Romance The Romance of the Forest The Mysteries of Udolfo (1794) and The Italian (1797), as well as a volume of descriptions of her travels in Holland, Germany and the Lake District. The success of The Romance of the Forest established Radcliffe as the leading exponent of the historical Gothic Romance. Her later novels met with even greater attention, and produced many imitators (and, famously, Jane Austen's burlesque of The Romance of the Forest in Northanger Abbey), and influenced the work of Sir Walter Scott and Mary Wollstonecraft.

Ann Radcliffe
A young woman, born to a poor but noble family, loses first her mother and then her father. She becomes the ward of her greedy aunt who marries an Italian nobleman for the money. Her father's estate executor sells her family home. Meanwhile, her new uncle promises her hand in marriage to a vile count in order to seal an alliance. She is whisked away to Castle Udolpho in Tuscany, never again to see the young chevalier she loves. [And this is just the first volume...] Ann Radcliffe invented the Gothic Romance. The Mysteries of Udolpho , this massive (300,000 words) novel, is the one Jane Austen lampooned in Northanger Abbey . It is presented here in four volumes. The Ann Radcliffe Trust in Harvard College (formerly the Harvard College Women's Initiative), founded in 1997 by Harvard College, exists to raise awareness of women, women's leadership, and women's issues at Harvard and beyond, while emphasizing relevance to the undergraduate students it serves. In the interest of promoting dialogue among students, faculty, administrators, alumnae/i, and prominent women, the Trust serves as the guiding set of principles on which forums for discussion and interaction are given during each academic year. The Trust is named for Ann Radcliffe who established the first scholarship fund at Harvard College in 1643, and for whom Radcliffe College was named two and a half centuries later. The Ann Radcliffe Trust aims to provide a network of exchange between professional women and students to promote communication and education, and works closely with faculty and students at Harvard College to advance and expand the understanding of women's leadership. Throughout the year the Trust will hold events that bring professional women to campus to meet with students to share their success stories and strategies, and facilitate discussion about a variety of women's issues. The Ann Radcliffe Trust also promotes the Terrie Fried Bloom '75 Harvard College Women's Leadership Awards and sponsors the annual Amy Smith Berylson '75 lecture.

Product Rating: You will enjoy this if you read on its terms: with patience and imagination.
by gothicfunk , Jul 18 '06
Pros: It's long. Meaning the pleasure isn't over too quickly. Also: suspenseful, rich, and sensible.
Cons: It's long. Sometimes obnoxiously so. Exposition tends to drag on. Plot and prose are shaky. The Mysteries of Udolpho is one of my favorite books, and if it wasn't for its length, I probably would have read and reread the things at least a dozen times. With the Castle of Otranto it is probably the novel most universally associated ... Read the full review Product Rating: A Good, but Rather Long, Introduction to the Gothic Novel
