Executive summary: The Mysteries of Udolpho English novelist, the only daughter of William and Ann Ward, was born in London on the 9th of July 1764. She was the author of three famous novels: The Romance of the Forest The Mysteries of Udolpho (1794) and The Italian (1797). When she was twenty-three years old she married William Radcliffe, an Oxford graduate and student of law. He gave up his profession for literature, and afterwards became proprietor and editor of the English Chronicle . After The Italian Sir Walter Scott wrote an appreciative essay for the edition of 1824, and Christina Rossetti was one of her admirers. She exercised a great influence on her contemporaries, and the "Schedoni" character in The Italian is one of the prototypes of the Byronic hero.

Smith, 1816), 118 pp. This electronic edition seeks to collect together all of the poems featured in her novels; the grouping, therefore, covers the 1816 edition and adds to it a few poems not featured in that edition. As Radcliffe's poetical work in her heyday always worked within her novels, this electronic collection also seeks to put each poem back into its fictional context.

When first the vernal morn of life, Beam'd on my infant eye, Fond I survey'd the smiling scene, Nor saw the tempest nigh, Hope's bright illusions touch'd my soul, My yound ideas led; And Fancy's vivid tints combine'd, And fairy prospects spread. My guileless heart expanded wide, With filial fondness fraught; Paternal love that heart supplied With all its fondness sought. But O! the cruel, quick reverse! Fate all I lov'd involv'd; Pale Grief Hope's trembling rays dispers'd, And Fancy's dreams dissolv'd."

There is not much known about the life of Ann Radcliffe except that she was one of the most acclaimed and contraversial female novelists of her time. Her first work was published in 1764 and her last in 1826. She was married to an oxford graduate and lived a very secluded and secretive life. Many described her as meloncholy and she never really socialized with others, but she did write some of the most interesting and stimulating Gothic literature and remained true to the Romantic ideals while edging on the darker side of fiction. She encompassed the elements of Gothic literature in her works and is still widely read. Radcliffe's Published Books The Castles of Athlin and Dunbayne - 1789

    • Introduction
(Born Ann Ward) English novelist, poet, and journal writer. Considered one of the most important writers of the English Gothic tradition, Radcliffe transformed the Gothic novel from a mere vehicle for the depiction of terror into an instrument for exploring the psychology of fear and suspense. Her emphasis on emotion, perception, and the relationship between atmosphere and sensibility helped pave the way for the Romantic movement in England. Radcliffe's best-known novel, The Mysteries of Udolpho (1794), ranks as one of the chief exemplars of the Gothic genre.
      BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION
Radcliffe was born in London. A shy child afflicted with asthma, she read widely. Though she was given private instruction in the classics, literature, painting, and drawing, Radcliffe received little encouragement from her parents to continue her studies. As a young woman, Radcliffe associated with the "bluestockings" Lady Mary Wortley Montagu and Hester Lynch Piozzi, who, biographers believe, provided her with inspiration and intellectual stimulation. In 1787 she married William Radcliffe, later the editor of the English Chronicle , who recognized her talent and encouraged her to begin writing novels.

    Ann Radcliffe
Ann Radcliffe was born in 1764, the daughter of a London tradesman. In 1786 she married William Radcliffe, later the manager of The English Chronicle. She set her first novel, The Castles of Athlin and Dunbayne (1789), in Scotland, and it received little critical or public attention. Using more exotic locations in Europe, notably the 'sublime' landscapes of the Alps and Pyrenees, she wrote four more novels within ten years: A Sicilian Romance The Romance of the Forest The Mysteries of Udolfo (1794) and The Italian (1797), as well as a volume of descriptions of her travels in Holland, Germany and the Lake District. The success of The Romance of the Forest established Radcliffe as the leading exponent of the historical Gothic Romance. Her later novels met with even greater attention, and produced many imitators (and, famously, Jane Austen's burlesque of The Romance of the Forest in Northanger Abbey ), and influenced the work of Sir Walter Scott and Mary Wollstonecraft. The Italian was the last book she published in her lifetime; a novel
