Radcliffe was born Ann Ward in Holborn . At the age of 22, she married journalist William Radcliffe, owner and editor of the English Chronicle , in Bath in . The couple was childless and, to amuse herself, she began to write fiction, which her husband encouraged. She published The Castles of Athlin and Dunbayne in . It set the tone for the majority of her work, which tended to involve innocent, but heroic young women who find themselves in gloomy, mysterious castles ruled by even more mysterious barons with dark pasts. Her works were extremely popular among the upper class and the growing middle class , especially among young women. Her works included

Radcliffe, Ann
9 July 1764 - 7 February 1823
Hugely popular Gothic novelist of the 1790s (and beyond), Radcliffe crafted a brand of explained supernaturalism (which owed not a little to the early novels of Charlotte Smith ) that struck a chord with British readers during the anxious 1790s. Her blend of moralism, aesthetics, and drama became definitive for what was often taken as a more genteel strain of Gothic fiction during the Romantic period, although that characterization of her work has come in for critical scrutiny in recent years, owing in no small measure to the groundbreaking biographical work of Rictor Norton (see below). Hers is one of the most famous early names of the Gothic tradition; The Mysteries of Udolpho is an essential Gothic text, though many readers prefer The Italian and the oft-overlooked The Romance of the Forest . Radcliffe suddenly quit writing despite ongoing fame and significant financial reward; her later reclusiveness, which may well be attributed to a nervous breakdown, and her acute lifelong sense of propriety, decorum, and reserve have left us with no known portraits or likenesses.

Ann Radcliffe was the most popular writer of her day and almost universally admired. Contemporary critics called her the mighty enchantress and the Shakespeare of romance -writers. Her popularity continued through the nineteenth century; for Keats, she was Mother Radcliffe, and for Scott, the first poetess of romantic fiction Little was or is known about Radcliffe's life, so not surprisingly apocryphal stories sprang up about her: it was reported that she had gone mad as a result of her dreadful imagination and been confined to an asylum, that she had been captured as a spy in Paris, or that she ate rare pork chops before retiring to stimulate nightmares for her novels; several times she was falsely rumored to be dead. She seems to have been happily married and to have been fortunate in having a husband who encouraged her to write. There is no explanation for why, at the age of thirty-two, the most popular writer of her times stopped publishing; there is of course much speculation by her biographers and by literary critics. In 1833, years after her death, her husband published some of her poems and a historical romance, Gaston de Blondville ; it is not clear that she intended to publish these works.

I apprehend that neither Shakespeare nor Milton by their fictions, nor Mr. Burke by his reasoning, anywhere looked to positive horror as a source of the sublime, though they all agree that terror is a very high one; and there lies the great difference between horror and terror, but in uncertainty and obscurity, that accompany the first, respecting the dreader evil.

Ann Radcliffe was born in 1764, the daughter of a London tradesman. In 1786 she married William Radcliffe, later the manager of The English Chronicle. She set her first novel, The Castles of Athlin and Dunbayne (1789), in Scotland, and it received little critical or public attention. Using more exotic locations in Europe, notably the 'sublime' landscapes of the Alps and Pyrenees, she wrote four more novels within ten years:

From LoveToKnow 1911
RADCLIFFE ANN (1764-1823), English novelist, only daughter of William and Ann Ward , was born in London on the 9th of July 1764. She was the author of three famous novels: The Romance of the Forest The Mysteries of Udolpho (1794) and The Italian (1797). When she was twentythree years old she married William Radcliffe, an Oxford graduate and student of law. He gave up his profession for literature, and afterwards became proprietor and editor of the English Chronicle. After The Italian she gave up writing for publication, and was reported to have been driven mad by the horrors of her own creations, but the nearest approach to eccentricity on Mrs Radcliffe's part was dislike of public notice. Of scenery Mrs Radcliffe was an enthusiastic admirer, and she made driving tours with her husband every other summer through the English counties. She died on the 7th of February 1823. In the history of the English novel, Mrs Radcliffe holds an interesting place. She is too often confounded with her imitators, who vulgarized her favourite "properties" of rambling and ruinous old castles, dark, desperate and cadaverous villains, secret passages, vaults , trapdoors, evidences of deeds of monstrous crime sights and sounds of mysterious horror. She deserves at least the credit of originating a school of which she was the most distinguished exponent; and none of her numerous imitators approach her in ingenuity of plot, fertility of incident or skill in devising apparently supernatural occurrences capable of explanation by human agency and natural coincidence. She had a genuine gift for scenic effect, and her vivid imagination provided every tragic situation in her stories with its appropriate setting.

Page It is a curious coincidence of literary history that the stars that reigned in the year of the nativity of The Castle of Otranto (1764) saw the birth of Mrs. Ann Radcliffe (Ward), in whose works we perceive the Gothic fiction approaching its meridian. Not much is known about her life, except that she was the wife of an Oxford graduate, and that she wrote her weird and mysterious tales beside a blazing fire in a quiet room to enliven her long, solitary winter evenings. Extraordinary fascinating stories flowed from her pen which, with all their faults, unmistakably bear the stamp of genius. The name of this potent enchantress, who touched the secret springs of fear and extended the domain of romance, was felt as a spell by her admirers, and to this day her blood-curdling terrors freeze many a midnight reader. Yet she was known only by her works. The Edinburgh Review (May 1823) declares: "She never appeared in public, nor mingled in private society, but kept herself apart, like the sweet bird that sings its solitary notes, shrouded and unseen." She spent a life in the quiet shade of domestic seclusion, unheeded amidst the bustle of the world, confining her activities to domestic duties and homely pleasures. "She was more than repaid by the enjoyments which were fostered in the shade; and perhaps few distinguished authors have passed a life so blameless and so happy." . . . She probably attended Sophia Lee's school at Bath, and perhaps the only reference we get about her person is given by Charles Bucke in an interesting footnote to a curious work
