"His date is approximately settled by two passages in the poem, viz. vi. 531 sqq., in which occurs an illustration drawn from the man-and-beast fights of the amphitheatre , which were suppressed by Theodosius I . (379-395 A.D.); and xiii. 335 sqq., which contains a prophecy, the special particularity of which, it is maintained by Koechly, limits its applicability to the middle of the fourth century A.D." Some scholars suggest an earlier date in the or even the 2nd century , arguing that his Posthomerica shows an influence from the " Second Sophistic ", the school of Greek orators who flourished in the first and second centuries. According to his own account (xii. 310), he began composing poetry in his early youth while tending sheep near Smyrna (present-day Ä°zmir His epic in fourteen books, known as the

A new English translation of Quintus' Posthomerica was long overdue. The archaizing language of Arthur Way's 1913 Loeb is occasionally harder to follow than the accompanying Greek text, which is that of Koechly's 1850 edition. Frederick Combellack's 1968 prose version ( The War at Troy Posthomerica ] has tended to be dismissed as a late imitation of Homer without serious attempt to assess its qualities. (...) How far the main thrust of this critique is justifiable can now be left for unprejudiced readers to judge for themselves" (p. vii).
Introduction
In their recent commentary on Posthomerica 5, J. and the late Kevin Lee provided what was, amazingly, the first full-scale introduction to Quintus and his poem in English. J.'s introduction in the present volume presses largely the same points, but it has been expertly tailored to suit a wider audience. It opens with a section on "Homer and the Epic Cycle" which discusses the oral background of the Greek epic tradition, the Trojan cycle, the contents and nature of the cyclic epics (rightly held to be composed substantially later than the Homeric epics), and the special status, contents, and organization of the

Quintus of Smyrna portrays the gods quite differently than do other ancient poets. In Homer especially, but also in other canonical works, the gods are quarrelsome, inscrutable, capricious, and callous to human suffering. In the Posthomerica , they are willingly subordinate to Zeus and concerned both to maintain harmony among themselves and to ensure the fated course of human events. They are deeply moved by human suffering, rarely harming men except to punish impious wickedness. Quintus effects this revision of the portrayal of the gods in two ways. He avoids, minimises, or qualifies matters which ancient commentators specifically criticized as unseemly or felt compelled to explain away. Also, he evokes specific passages, usually from Homer, not simply imitating them, but altering them in such a way as to present the gods more favorably. Subject Area

Description
Composed in the third century A.D., the Trojan Epic is the earliest surviving literary evidence for many of the traditions of the Trojan War passed down from ancient Greece. Also known as the Posthomerica , or "sequel to Homer," the Trojan Epic chronicles the course of the war after the burial of Troy's greatest hero, Hektor. Quintus, believed to have been an educated Greek living in Roman Asia Minor, included some of the war's most legendary events: the death of Achilles, the Trojan Horse, and the destruction of Troy. But because Quintus deliberately imitated Homer's language and style, his work has been dismissed by many scholars as pastiche. A vivid and entertaining story in its own right, the Trojan Epic is also particularly significant for what it reveals about its sources—the much older, now lost Greek epics about the Trojan War known collectively as the Epic Cycle. Written in the Homeric era, these poems recounted events not included in the

Amazon Sexuality
by Summer Stanger
Introduction
Amazon sexuality is an aspect of this warrior-women society that ancient authors comment on extensively. While we may not know the reason for these authors' interests in Amazonian sexual customs and practices, they nevertheless give us insight, sometimes conflicting evidence, on the way Amazons mated. These literary accounts help us not only understand customs, but also raise questions about the importance of Amazon virginity, possible love relationships, and connections between sexuality and warfare between Amazons and the Greeks. Venus of Melos. Photo Barbra McManus VRoma
Amazon Sexual Customs
Amazon Sexuality and Violence
Amazons as a collective group are portrayed as unyielding and merciless in battle. In addition, the primary sources that focus on sexual customs do not give thorough accounts of individual relationships. We can only conjecture that individual relationships among the Scythians and Amazons were monogamous marriages. However, once Amazons are portrayed as individuals in literature, sexuality is almost always associated with feminine weakness. The most famous accounts we have of individualized Amazons are the stories of Penthesilea, Hippolyta, and Antiope. Quintus of Smyrna of the 4th c. C.E. gives the most detailed account of the story of
Penthesilea's attempt to avenge the city of Troy after Hector is defeated in battle by Achilles. An important focus is placed on Penthesilea's beauty. Quintus writes that "about her face there was a beauty at once terrible and splendid" (Quintus of Smyrna 35).

Nonnus’ Dionysiaca: Summary and Discussion of 17 articles by R. F. Newbold This site is devoted to a review of over 27 years of my research into the longest epic to survive from antiquity, Nonnus’ Dionysiaca. This 48-book poem is over 21,000 hexameters long, considerably longer than the works of the great forerunner that Nonnus sought to surpass, Homer, whose Iliad runs to over 15, 000 lines, and his Odyssey, over 12,000. Apart from his origin in Panopolis in Egypt, and being the probable author of a verse paraphrase of the St. John Gospel (he may have been a Christian bishop) and probably living in the 5 th Century C.E, nothing is known of a poet who has been widely dismissed as unreadable and decadent. Yet he was an influential author in his day. His work offers many rewards and provides much to admire for those willing to lay aside requirements that an author be a master of plot and character, and who can accept that Nonnus is more about theme and motif. That he will ever be elevated to the canon of must-read authors from antiquity or western literature is too much to hope for but it is pleasing to see the recent appearance of the first monograph on Nonnus in English, and an attempt to consolidate the partial rehabilitation that has occurred in recent years as understanding of the author and his methods and aims have deepened (R. Shorrock, The Challenge of Epic.
