Note that the examples provided may not contain all fields that should be present in bibliographic or authority records.
  • Is it true that LC does not make a NAR for all uniform titles? Is it necessary to search the LC database to determine if LC has a bibliographic record for the item before creating a NAR for a UT when one is used as a secondary access point? If the bibliographic item is found in the utilities, but not on a LC record (040 $a DLC), is it still necessary to make the NAR for the UT title used on my PCC-designated bibliographic record? Why? Are all PCC libraries required to follow LC policy in assigning a UT title to bibliographic records? ... Are PCC catalogers responsible for updating name/title authority records that use the subfield $k according to the pre-AACR2 rules?
  • Is it true that LC does not make a NAR for all UTs? Yes, that's correct. LC's uniform title policy is to make NARs for UTs only in the three basic situations stated in

    25. CONTEXT: Barbara Wright Reading Raymond Queneau

Right from his very first book, The Bark Tree (1933), Queneau acquired a few farsighted fans who understood that something new and special had arrived on the French literary scene. They remained a select few for over twenty years, until in 1959 Zazie in the Metro became a bestsellerfor all the wrong reasons. Roland Barthes suggested one explanation: he said it was doubtless that the fact Queneau's fiction made its readers laugh out loud originally prevented it from being held in as high esteem as it deserved. It is true that "France neither looks for nor expects humor from its great writers," but although it may well be Queneau's humor that makes his novels so enjoyable on a first reading, he was always an innovator, and as everyone knows, the general public has always needed to take its time to get the hang of something it's not used to. And while Queneau's novels always have plenty of plot, and plenty of believable (if unusual) characters, they are also chockablock full of the eruditeeven serioussubjects in which Queneau took a passionate interest, but for which many of us, alas, still retain the distaste implanted in us by some of our schoolteachers. . . . His genius, though, is that he makes these subjects attractive, and even understandable; he imbricates them within his all-embracing

Comment? Queneau, Raymond. Pierrot Mon Ami (1942). Translated from the French by Barbara Wright. Dalkey Archive, 1989. Calling an author sui generis Pierrot Mon Ami , his eighth novel, is a fine introduction to the particular style of this French polymath. Queneau takes the mystery and turns it around so that we see the back of it, never getting enough information and never finding anyone (except ourselves) interested in the solution. Pierrot walks through a world without conclusions and he does it happily. Conversational Reading Tags: novels queneau

In 1939, when Anne was 13, her parents sent her to England to escape the Nazis. She was met by an aunt she had never seen before, and within a week, was sent to a school 140 miles away to live among strangers and to learn a new language. Abstract
Researchers in the humanities who focus their efforts on the use of computer technology to engage texts have wrestled with the relevance of their work. Within the field of humanities computing, scholars have used information technology to analyze single texts as well as large corpora in search of patterns that would be difficult to detect without the use of machines. Despite the ability of computers to organize and process massive amounts of textual data, the broader community of literary scholars has not readily accepted the potential of digital technology in humanities research. In 1993, Mark Olsen argued that scholars using computers to analyze texts tended to focus on quantifying a literary effect instead of exploring how texts are meaningful in broader historical and cultural contexts ( Olsen 1993 ). Recent efforts to reconceptualize text analysis with computers have emphasized hypothesis testing and the search for elusive patterns that may provide insight into interpreting texts. In order to broaden the appeal of this new direction in humanities computing, advocates have invoked the example of the Oulipo, a group of writers in France that invent “potential” ways to create literature using rigorous formal constraints. The idea that computers can lend themselves to formal methods of subjective textual study (thereby assuaging concerns that computers will make reading literature a soulless process of crunching numbers) is expressed forcefully by Jerome McGann in his book
