The Ellery Queen mystery V. GANGADHAR
THE bottle was chunky; the liquid it contained was amber-coloured. But I was more interested in the packet of books accompanying it, gazing at it from a distance, then bringing it closer and finally opening it. My expectations were high. My daughter now in the United States during her recent trip back home brought traditional gifts like clothes, perfumes, chocolates and shoes to the rest of the family. I was not keen on any of these. But when she insisted, I mentioned a list of books by mystery writer Ellery Queen, out of print in India and, if possible, some cranberry juice. These had arrived! During my first visit to the U.S. in 1989, unlike most journalists who opted for single-malt bourbon or sour mash whiskey, I took to the sweet cranberry juice. Coke and Pepsi invaded India but not my favourite drink. My daughter explained cranberry juice was no problem and brought a brand, which was certified "safe" by the American Diabetics Association. What more could I ask for? The next few days were happy. Revelling in the company of my daughter, I sipped cranberry juice and began reading the Ellery Queen mysteries. My association with Queen began way back in the 1950's when I discovered him at the Calicut Public Library. And the affair had continued. I began to collect his books but soon found them hard to come by. "Ellery Queen? Sorry sir, out of print!" was the usual reply from bookshops. Rather surprising when Conal Doyle, Agatha Christie and Erle Stanley Gardner and other traditional crime writers were freely available. I searched high and low, talked to book lovers from other cities, but my collection of Queen remained incomplete.

Quade was very smart and a good investigator. He was known as the "Human Encyclopedia" because he'd applied his extraordinary mind to memorizing the entire Encyclopedia Americana in his youth, and then committed to memory every odd and interesting bit of information he'd run across since then. In his own immodest but not undeserved words: I have the greatest brain in the United States, probably the greatest in the world. I know the answers to all questions. Try me out, gentlemen. Ask any question at allany! History, science, mathematics, general interest. He was in his 40s, tall, lean and handsome, and made a living traveling around the U.S. selling books with titles like The Compendium of Human Knowledge . He was also a psychologist, and used that when some poor fool decided to commit a crime against him or his friends, to whom he was quite loyal. He naturally knew everything there was to know about the law and was devoted to seeing that justice was done. Quaile, Inspector

    To Guide Entry
    Introduction
When reading and discussing short stories with students in the sixth, seventh or eighth grades, much time is spent in figuring out the plot. Focusing on the central problem in a story forces students to understand the motivation of the characters. Why do the characters act the way they do? Amazingly, many students will read stories without ever considering the problem presented by the author, and then they end up totally confused about what they have read. After working with plot until students begin to ask themselves, what is the problem in this story, characters and setting can be discussed more clearly. The pieces make more sense once the motivation of the action is understood. Reading mystery and detective fiction is a splendid means of accomplishing plot recognition. Detective fiction allows students to get in tune with the author, and then with the characters in a book. While reading a mystery, the young person is forced to listen to the author much more than in other types of literature. Therefore, the focus on plot brings about a clearer understanding of how an author goes about contriving his tale. While enjoying a good book the student is also learning how a good author works. Once a student’s grasp of plot is firm, the further study of character and setting will make more sense.
