Quasimodo, Salvatore
Between 1930 and 1938, the year he left his government position, he made the acquaintance of many prominent Italian authors and painters. In 1938 he became editor of the weekly magazine, Tempo, and three years later was appointed to the chair of Italian Literature at the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory in Milan.
During the 1930's Quasimodo was a leader of the "Hermetic" school of poetry; however, with the appearance of his translations Lirici Greci (Greek Lyrics), 1940, it was obvious that his direction was no longer entirely along the lines of that group. In Nuove Poesie (New Poems), 1942, Quasimodo reveals both the influence of classical stylistics and a greater understanding of life in general. His subsequent translations, which range from the Greek and Latin poets ( Sophocles Aeschylus Euripides Ovid , Vergil, etc.) to Shakespeare and Molière and twentieth-century writers ( Neruda , e.e. cummings, Aiken, etc.), reflect his full appreciation of the original works as well as his modern taste and sensibility.

Until about 1942, Quasimodo belonged to the hermetic school, a group of poets who wrote in a difficult, personal style that seemed sealed off from everyday life. Largely because of World War II, Quasimodo turned to a style that dealt with the events of his time. Beginning with Day after Day (1947), his poetry became an accurate reflection of the grief and destruction that the war had brought to humanity.

He began to write while working as a civil engineer. By 1938 he had published five books of poems. From 1940 he was drama critic of the journal Tempo. He founded the Hermetic school of Italian poets, who, unable to speak out openly against fascism, had to write in veiled terms using complex symbolism and a sophisticated style. After World War II his writing became more socially committed, reflecting his opposition to the unjust fascist regime, the horror of war, and the feeling of guilt experienced by the Italians, as in Giorno dopo giorna (1947, Day After Day).

Salvatore Quasimodo, one of Sicily's better known poets, was also a critic, editor and sometime translator. He was born in Modica, near Ragusa in southeastern Sicily, in 1901, the son of a railway stationmaster an important position in the days before widespread use of automobiles. Salvatore initially studied engineering but after leaving school worked at several jobs in civil engineering. He had always loved to write, and his brother-in-law, the novelist Elio Vittorini, encouraged him to pursue writing professionally. His early published work was featured in magazines. His first collection of poems, Waters and Lands , was published in 1930. It includes work written over a number of years, much of which reflected the moods prevalent in Sicily during that time. In 1938, Quasimodo became a magazine editor and, in 1941, a professor of literature in Milan. And Suddenly It's Evening , published in 1942, remains his most widely read book, but Day After Day (1947) presents touching impressions of post-war Italy, while

PRESENTATION COPY QUASIMODO, Salvatore. Oboe sommerso. Genoa, Edizioni di Circoli, 1932. 8vo, pp. 127; a very good copy, uncut in the original printed wrappers. First edition of Quasimodo's second collection of poems, edited by Eugenio Montale. One of 500 numbered copies, of a total edition of 515. With a signed presentation inscription on half-title to the poet Raffaele Carrieri (1905-1984): 'A Raffaele Carrieri con affetto, Quasimodo. Milano, gennaio 1935'. 'Salvatore Quasimodo (1901-68, Nobel prize for literature 1959) is the poet whose lyrics best illustrate what was then referred to as "hermetic" poetry: a verse sealed in impenetrable imagery where nuances of sound and colour take precedence over subject-matter. In his books Oboe sommerso ("Sunken oboe", 1932), Erato e Apollion ("Aerato and Apollyon", 1936) both contained in Ed è subito sera ("And It Is Suddenly Evening", 1942), the poet is absorbed in the vagaries of landscape, nature's mysteries and the substance of the unfathomable, arcane past of his Sicilian homeland' (Cambridge History of Italian Literature, p. 504-5). Gambetti-Vezzosi p. 378; Spaducci p. 241.
