Pythagoras of Samos was born about 580 BC. He was according to legend the son of a grain merchant who been granted Samoan citizenship for bringing grain to the city at a time of famine. Pythagoras evolved a whole way of looking at life from counting beans. He founded a school of philosophy at Samos until a change of regime forced his exile to Crotona, an important Greek colony on the foot of Italy. Here his school flourished until it was suppressed in about 508BC. Pythagoras is said to have taken refuge in Metapontum where he died. His school was sacked and his followers persecuted. An attitude imputing value to number will always be threatening to those who know the price of everything. His teachings were transmitted orally and his doctrine is only available through later writings. He is said to be the first teacher to call himself philosophos , lover of wisdom, rather than sophos or wise man, and the first to use the term

About: Pythagoras of Samos is an Ionian (Greek) philosopher and founder of Pythagoreanism, a religious movement. In the late 6th century BC, he made influential contributions to philosophy and religious teaching. However, he is best known for the Pythagorean theorem.
The Pythagorean theorem is a relation in Euclidean geometry among the three sides of a right triangle. Pythagoras is credited with its discovery and proof.
More than a mystic and scientist, Pythagoras is often revered as a great mathematician, the first pure mathematician, and the "father of numbers."

Pythagoras of Samos
From the Introduction to Arithmetic , by Nicomachus of Gerasa (ca. 100 AD), trans. by Martin Luther D'Ooge, Macmillan, 1926 (pp. 181-190).
Book I Chapter I The ancients, who under the leadership of Pythagoras first made science systematic, defined philosophy as the love of wisdom. Indeed the name itself means this, and before Pythagoras all who had knowledge were called 'wise' indiscriminately a carpenter, for example, a cobbler, a helmsman, and in a word anyone who was versed in any art or handicraft. Pythagoras, however, restricting the title so as to apply to the knowledge and comprehension of reality, and calling the knowledge of the truth in this the only wisdom, naturally designated the desire and pursuit of this knowledge philosophy, as being desire for wisdom.
He is more worthy of credence than those who have given other definitions, since he makes clear the sense of the term and the thing defined. This 'wisdom' he defined as the knowledge, or science, of the truth in real things, conceiving 'science' to be a steadfast and firm apprehension of the underlying substance, and 'real things' to be those which continue uniformly and the same in the universe and never depart even briefly from their existence; these real things would be things immaterial, by sharing in the substance of which everything else that exists under the same name and is so called is said to be 'this particular thing,' and exists.

Pythagoras of Samos, c.560-c.480 BC, was a Greek philosopher and religious leader who was responsible for important developments in the history of mathematics, astronomy, and the theory of music. He migrated to Croton and founded a philosophical and religious school there that attracted many followers. Because no reliable contemporary records survive, and because the school practiced both secrecy and communalism, the contributions of Pythagoras himself and those of his followers cannot be distinguished. Pythagoreans believed that all relations could be reduced to number relations ("all things are numbers"). This generalization stemmed from certain observations in music, mathematics, and astronomy. The Pythagoreans noticed that vibrating strings produce harmonious tones when the ratios of the lengths of the strings are whole numbers, and that these ratios could be extended to other instruments. Pythagoras of Samos
Life Pythagoras (c. 580-500 BC) is one of the most important and enigmatic Presocratic figures. He was born in Samos and traveled for many years in Egypt and the Orient. Due to Samos’ tyrannical rule, Pythagoras migrated to southern Italy about 532 BC and established the Thiasos , a religious and philosophical academy-brotherhood at Croton with ethical and political aims. Pythagoras was influenced by oriental thought and especially oriental mysticism. He wrote nothing but most of his radical thinking survived in the writings of his students Philolaus, Archytas and Alcmaeon. Pythagoras’ ideas was also influential in Plato and later Platonism. Important stories about his life and activities, but dubious most of them, are presented in the Neoplatonic biographies of Porphyry and Iamblichus. Philosophy Pythagoras was a great mathematician. He seems to discover (1) the incommensurability of the side and diagonal of a square, and (2) the Pythagorean theorem for right triangles. On this basis, for Pythagoras cosmos is ordered according to hidden mathematical relations. The power of number has a functional significance, both ontological and cosmological, in the objective world. Number is the wisest and eternal principle in the natural world. It can be observed in the harmony of the world and the musical harmony of the heavenly spheres. Music is the best manifestation of the mathematical cosmos

Pythagoras of Samos
The Greek philosopher Pythagoras of Samos is responsible of great advances in the study of astronomy, mathematics and the theory of music. A tyrant ruled Samos at the time and Pythagoras fled to southern Italy at about 532 BC. In Croton, Pythagoras founded a religious school that also specialized in philosophy. Pythagoras's school made outstanding advances and contributions to the study of mathematics. His school was very private and secretive which made it hard for researchers to distinguish between his work and those of his followers and colleagues Even though the theorem now known as Pythagoras's theorem, he was the first to understand and prove it. Pythagoras believed that all relations could be reduced to number relations. He generalized this from observing music, mathemati
