Pythagoras of Samos (c. 569-c. 500 BC)
To the Pythagoreans "everything is number" and every number was supposed to be a quantity that could be expressed as the ratio of two integers. Such a number we now call a rational number . The Pythagoreans used music as an example of the perfection and harmony of numbers that can be expressed as ratios. They showed that pitch could be represented as a simple ratios that came from the length of equally tight strings that could be plucked.
Perhaps the most famous of the Pythagoreans' mathematical results is Pythagoras's theorem . Then the sky fell in on the Pythagoreans' world-view. Using their very own theorems they showed that not all numbers are rational. Their discovery that the square root of 2 (the length of the hypotenuse of a triangle with sides one and one) can't be expressed as ratio of two whole numbers was to have been kept a closely guarded a secret, but was later revealed by one of the cult's members.
Pythagoras believed that Earth was a sphere at the center of the universe, and correctly realized that the morning star and the evening star were the same object (Venus). He was also the first to teach that the Earth was a sphere rotating around a central "fire."

Pythagoras of Samos

Pythagoras of Samos is often described as the first pure mathematician. He is an extremely important figure in the development of mathematics yet we know relatively little about his mathematical achievements. Unlike many later Greek mathematicians, where at least we have some of the books which they wrote, we have nothing of Pythagoras's writings. The society which he led, half religious and half scientific, followed a code of secrecy which certainly means that today Pythagoras is a mysterious figure.

Pythagorean Theorem
The Greek philosopher Pythagoras of Samos is responsible of great advances in the study of astronomy, mathematics and the theory of music. A tyrant ruled Samos at the time and Pythagoras fled to southern Italy at about 532 BC. In Croton, Pythagoras founded a religious school that also specialized in philosophy. Pythagoras's school made outstanding advances and contributions to the study of mathematics. His school was very private and secretive which made it hard for researchers to distinguish between his work and those of his followers and colleagues
Even though the theorem now known as Pythagoras's theorem, he was the first to understand and prove it. Pythagoras believed that all relations could be reduced to number relations. He generalized this from observing music, mathematics and astronomy. He first noticed that different harmonies were made from different lengths in the ratio of whole numbers, and that this observation could be extended to different instruments. He further realized that if a string with the same degree of tension was reduced to half, when plucked the pitch of the shorter string was exactly one octave higher than that of the original string.

He was born on the island of Samos, Greece in 569 BC. Various writings place his death between 500 BC and 475 BC in Metapontum, Lucania, Italy. His father, Mnesarchus, was a gem merchant. His mother's name was Pythais. Pythagoras had two or three brothers. Some historians say that Pythagoras was married to a woman named Theano and had a daughter Damo, and a son named Telauges, who succeeded Pythagoras as a teacher and possibly taught Empedocles. Others say that Theano was one of his students, not his wife, and say that Pythagoras never married and had no children. Pythagoras was well educated, and he played the lyre throughout his lifetime, knew poetry and recited Homer. He was interested in mathematics, philosophy, astronomy and music, and was greatly influenced by Pherekydes (philosophy), Thales (mathematics and astronomy) and Anaximander (philosophy, geometry).

About us
Contact Us Pythagoras (58 5-500 b.c.) was bo rn in Samos bu t resided and flourished for years in the southern town of Krotona , Italy . His parents named him Pythagoras honoring the ancient prophet Pythia. He is considered one of the most significant of ancient Greek philosophers and mathematicians. Founder of the Pythagoreon school and father of the renowned mathematical theory. His teachings evolved from experiences encountered in his travels to areas of Ionia and Italy . The myth surrounding this legendary figure is hidden in rugged terrain on the slopes of Kerkis mountain, in the southwestern section of the island. It is believed that this is where Pythagoras took refuge from the tyrant Polycrates . Invented by the infamous Pythagoras himself, the cup was designed to ascertain his students drink equal amounts of wine, while discouraging indulgence and abuse. Made of clay it holds a certain amount of liquid up to a designated point. Any excess liquid will provoke the loss of the entire contents through a hole in the bottom of the cup Pythagoras is also known to have developed a musical scale that harmonised with the vibration of the spinal column, each vertabrae being a note on an ascending scale. The lower notes beginning at the base of the spine, becoming higher as one goes up towards the brain. His musical scale put middle C at 2.5.6. vibration to match the 2.5.6. spinal column vibration and thus music was used for healing purposes successfully. In 1946 however, the concert pitch was changed to 2.6.4. altering the vibration of music and as a result losing its healing quality.

A. During the era when Polykrates was winning glory for the island with his great works and military achievements, another great personality of Samos was making it with his new theories and wisdom. This was of course the great philosopher Pythagoras son of Mnesarchus and Parthenia. His wife was Theano and his children were: Mnesarchus, Tilavges, Arimnistus, Mamercus, Myia and Damo.
His first teachers were Ferekydes, Ermodamas, Avares and Navaratus. Later he traveled to different places and in his travels he met many wise people of his time, learning many secrets, prophecies and magic. He traveled to Athens and Sparta where he studied the laws of Solon and Lykourgos. He also won twice in the Olympic Games in Olympia and Crete.

Pythagoras of Samos (ca. 560-ca. 480 BC)
Greek philosopher and mathematician who founded the mystic Pythagorean cult. The cult he founded was devoted to the study of numbers, which the Pythagoreans saw as concrete, material objects. They studied figurate numbers, Eric Weisstein's World of Math defining them as triangular numbers, Eric Weisstein's World of Math pentagonal numbers, Eric Weisstein's World of Math hexagonal numbers, Eric Weisstein's World of Math etc., based on the patterns that numbers of regularly spaced dots formed (Boyer 1968, p. 59-61). Pythagoras's biographer Proclus ascribed two specific mathematical discoveries to Pythagoras: construction of the regular solids (known today as the Platonic solids Eric Weisstein's World of Math), and the theory of proportionals.
Pythagoras also investigated the ratios of lengths corresponding to musical harmonies, undertook studies in number theory, and developed methods of geometric proof. Among the results attributed to Pythagoras and his followers is the proof that the number (Pythagoras's constant Eric Weisstein's World of Math) is irrational, Eric Weisstein's World of Math usually attributed to Hippasus.

Pythagoras of Samos
Pythagoras of Samos was not only the first "pure mathematician" but also an important religious philosopher. He was trained in Egypt in the universal mysteries, which included math, geometry, astronomy, music, harmonics, and intervals, especially as they relate to states of consciousness. Pythagoras established an influential school in Croton (now in southern Italy) that had many followerscalled akousmatics and an inner circle of disciples known as mathematikoi . The mathematikoi Amos Bronson Alcott undoubtedly had Pythagoras in mind when he formed his Fruitlands commune in 1843.
