    The Father of Numbers
Pythagoras, the son of Mnesarchus and Pythais, was born on the island of Samos, off the coast of Asia Minor (what is now mostly Turkey), about 569 BC. Pythais was a native of Samos. Mnesarchus was a merchant from Tyre. An apocryphal story says that he brought grain to Samos during a famine and was granted citizenship of Samos out of gratitude. Pythagoras probably had at least two brothers, perhaps three. Little is known about his childhood. He apparently grew up on Samos, but traveled with his father. It has been said he and his father returned to Tyre on at least one occasion and also traveled to Italy.

    Pythagoras of Samos
    an outline biography
The famous Greek philosopher mathematician Pythagoras was born circa 570 B.C. on Samos an island lying off the western coast of Asia Minor. Samos was at this time one of the colonies that had been developed by the city states of ancient Greece centred upon Asia Minor and the islands lying off its coasts. Such colonisation had been encouraged moreso by population pressures and political turmoils in ancient Greece rather than by the prospect of trading opportunities.
At this remove it is difficult to be precise about Pythagoras and his background, 570 B.C. is rather a long time ago and records were not really maintained even about prominent or controversial figures.
It is suggested that his mother came from amongst the colonial Greeks of Samos but that his father was a Phoenician craftsperson from Tyre who worked with precious metals and who had been granted citizenship rights after bringing corn to Samos at a time of famine.
Pythagoras seems to have had an impressive birthmark on his thigh that, amongst his fellows, was held to be a mark of divine favour - he was considered to have had a "Golden Thigh."

    Pythagoras of Samos
(569-475 BC) Pythagoras was born on the island of Samos, Greece in 569 BC. He was a Greek religious leader and a philosopher who made developments in astronomy, mathematics, and music theories. He moved to Croton (a city in southern Italy) and started a religious and philosophical school there. He had many followers called the Pythagoreans. Pythagoras did much more than just discover what is now referred to as the Pythagorean Theorem. Pythagoras and his followers contributed to music, astronomy and mathematics. Pythagoras believed in secrecy and communalism, so distinguishing his work from the work of his followers is almost impossible. When joining Pythagoras's group, you had to remain silent for five years before you could contribute to the group. Some of their discoveries were right, and some were proven wrong in time. The most important idea of the Pythagoreans was that most things could be understood through math, which was important to math and science development.

Pythagoras of Samos is often described as the first pure mathematician. He is an extremely important figure in the development of mathematics yet we know relatively little about his mathematical achievements. Unlike many later Greek mathematicians, where at least we have some of the books which they wrote, we have nothing of Pythagoras's writings. The society which he led, half religious and half scientific, followed a code of secrecy which certainly means that today Pythagoras is a mysterious figure. We do have details of Pythagoras's life from early biographies which use important original sources yet are written by authors who attribute divine powers to him, and whose aim was to present him as a god-like figure. What we present below is an attempt to collect together the most reliable sources to reconstruct an account of Pythagoras's life. There is fairly good agreement on the main events of his life but most of the dates are disputed with different scholars giving dates which differ by 20 years. Some historians treat all this information as merely legends but, even if the reader treats it in this way, being such an early record it is of historical importance. Pythagoras's father was Mnesarchus ([ ] and [ ]), while his mother was Pythais [

Introduction: In the three essays prior to this one, I outlined the influence of the Pythagoreans on Western science and philosophy, and in particular their contributions to mathematics in the areas of number theory and algebra. The interested reader will have recognised the significance of geometry in all these discoveries. This final essay on the Pythagoreans will attempt to describe some of their contributions to, and influence on, the body of geometry. A. Brief History of Geometry to the time of Pythagoras As has been discussed in the earlier essays, there are few surviving works from this period. Much of what follows is generally accepted as the history of geometry at this time. The principal source of information concerning very early Greek geometry is the Eudemian Summary which is found in the introduction to Proclus' (500 A.D.) "Commentary of Euclid, Book I". Unfortunately the original reference, "The History of Geometry" by Eudemus (370 B.C.), who was a pupil of Aristotle, is lost. This book apparently gave a full account of the developments in geometry to about 335B.C. It is believed that Proclus had reference to it for his summary. What follows is from Proclus' summary of geometry up to Pythagoras as described in Allman The Eudemian Summary attributes the origins of geometry to the Egyptians. It claims that the Egyptians invented geometry to restore the land boundaries which had been destroyed by the annual inundation of the Nile. Eudemus credits Thales of Miletus (ca. 640 - 548 B.C.) as having brought geometry into Greece :

(Musei Capitolini, Roma) Pythagoras of Samos (c.570-c.480): almost legendary Greek philosopher. Like his older contemporary Thales of Miletus , Pythagoras of Samos was looking for a first cause, but their approach was different. Thales was thinking of something concrete, water; Pythagoras, on the other hand, believed in a more abstract approach - numerals. According to legend, Pythagoras left his country and studied with the wise men of Egypt, but was taken captive when the Persian king Cambyses invaded the country of the Nile (525). He now became a student of the Chaldaeans of Babylon and the Magians of Persia. Some even say that he visited the Indian Brahmans, because Pythagoras believed in reincarnation, but this is almost certainly impossible, although he may have met Indian sages at the court of the Persian king Darius I the Great At the end of the sixth century, Pythagoras lived in southern Italy, where he founded a community of philosophers. In his view, our world was governed by numbers, and was therefore essentially harmonious. It is very difficult to know more about the philosophy of Pythagoras. The famous Pythagorean theorem is certainly not his invention, as it was known in Egypt and Babylonia at least a millennium earlier.

Who Was Pythagoras?: Pythagoras, who was born on the Aegean island of Samos in the 6th century B.C., was an ancient Greek philosopher and mathematician best known for a theorem in geometry that is named for him. He founded a philosophical school that deviated from the male-dominated Greek norms by allowing women to participate equally. The teachings of the school aren't strictly what we think of as philosophical. They also include rules on living and what to eat. Supposedly, the Pythagoreans explained the common human physiological response to beans as a spirit trying to exit the body. Therefore bean-consumption was taboo. ad_unit_target='mainAdUnit'; X Close this window Pythagoras of Samos was an early philosopher and mathematician who lived between 570 and 480 BC. Many of Pythagoras' mathematical insights and discoveries influenced modern mathematics such as the Pythagoras Theorem. The Pythagorean Theorem holds that the square of the hypotenuse of a right-angled triangle is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides. Some historians believe that Pythagoras' Theorem was information known by the Egyptians and Babylonians even before Pythagoras of Samos was credited with creating it. Pythagoras did develop many theories, however, encompassing many different subjects such as religion and music. All of his theories involved numbers in some way. Pythagoras' theory of music states that the time in between musical notes can be expressed as ratios between the numbers, or integers , one to four. Pythagoras believed that both music and numbers are powerful to the soul. That belief formed the basis of his religious convictions and teachings. Pythagoras of Samos founded a school that taught what would later be advanced by Nostradamus as numerology. Pythagoras believed that numbers express reality. Just as he discovered that music could be explained with numbers, he thought that the nature of the entire universe could be explained by number theory.

Not much is known about Pythagoras and nothing about his life and work can be proven. Probably, he lived around 500 BC. He may have studied Babylonian and Egyptian mathematics while traveling in those areas. He was particularly interested in geometry and number theory on which he also did some important research. The Pythagorean theorem and the Pythagorean Number Triplets are named after him. We know, however, quite a lot about the Pythagorean schools. Their students thought about philosophical questions like reincarnation and studied sciences, especially mathematics and astronomy. (Astronomy was part of mathematics back then). They made many new discoveries on these subjects. The Pythagoreans were also politically active. One of their most famous members was the philosopher Plato.
It is remarkable that women too were admitted. A couple of hundred years later, the wide spread attitude about women was that they are backwards in physical and mental strength and if you educate them, they only get chattery to top it off. Pythagoras was born in the island of Samos in ancient Greece. There are no good records regarding the life of Pythagoras, so the exact dates and other issues are not known with certainty. But, it is believed that it was around 570 BC. His first teacher was Pherecydes, and Pythagoras stayed in touch with him until Pherecydes' death. When Pythagoras was about 18 years old, he went to the island of Lesbos. There, he worked and learned from Anaximander, an astronomer and philosopher, and Thales of Miletus, a very wise philosopher and mathematician.
Pythagoras was known as "The Father of numbers". He made significant contributions to philosophy and religious teaching in the late 6th century BC. Pythagoras believed that everything was related to mathematics, and could be predicted and measured in rhythmic patterns or cycles.

Pythagoras in Samos: Pythagoras was born on the island of Samos in 570 BC. This island lies slightly off the western coast of Asia Minor. His mother was native of Samos and his father was a merchant from Tyre. He studied with the priest of Memphis, who was well-known for his wisdom. After Memphis, he studied at the temples of Tyre and Byblos in Phoenicia. It is most likely in Egypt where he came up with his geometric principles that would lead to his famous theorems. Samos Reviews Pythagoras did not only think up mathematical principles during his life. He also founded a religious society. His society had very strict rules of conduct. The inner circle of the society was called Mathmetikoi. As a member of the society, you had to live at the school, have no personal possessions and had to follow a vegetarian diet. They did allow students from other areas to attend the school. These students, called Akousmatics, were permitted to eat meat and own a few personal things. As a whole, the members of this society were known as Pythagoreans and had a very structured life of religious teaching, common meals, exercise, reading and philosophical study. They had to sing to the Greek god Apollo on a regular basis. They believed that they could use the lyre to cure illnesses of the soul and body.
