Very few American writers, while still alive, have been accorded the somewhat dubious honor of having their last name turned into an adjective. Even fewer have seen this resultant adjective become a buzzword in highbrow popular culture, a process that associates their name with everything from film and literature to advertising campaigns, pop music, and underground publications. Thomas Ruggles Pynchon, Jr., came into the collective consciousness of late-twentieth- and early-twenty-first-century American culture largely through the use (and abuse) of the labels “Pynchonian” and “Pynchonesque,” which sprang up after the publication of his mammoth novel Gravity’s Rainbow.

Writer
Name at birth: Thomas Ruggles Pynchon, Jr. Literary critics loved Thomas Pynchon's first novel, V , published in 1963. Instantly he was considered one of the great new prose modernists, often compared to Vonnegut and Joseph Heller. Pynchon's next books, The Crying of Lot 49 (1966) and Gravity's Rainbow (1973), established him as one of America's best living authors. His books are funny and tragic, hip Kafkaesque quests about love and death that have earned a cult following. Like J. D. Salinger , Pynchon has dodged publicity to the point where his reclusiveness has defined his public image, creating a rich environment for speculation and rumor about the man himself. Throughout the 1990s scholars and fans debated whether Pynchon was really the man behind The Letters of Wanda Tinasky to the AVA, a collection of letters written in the late '80s to a central California newspaper. Pynchon denied it, but that didn't stop the rumors. In 2000 the book Author Unknown: On the Trail of Anonymous claimed that Pynchon was not Wanda Tinasky.

For the Love of Big Brother
Orwell turns 100.
In the wake of WWII, George Orwell is said to have handed over the names of several potential communist sympathizers to the British government. This dirty little secret, first revealed several years ago, raised a bit of a shitstorm in certain intellectual circles. How could a man whose work condemned such behavior in no uncertain terms have become such a willing tool? Animal Farm satire, , Alexander Cockburn argued that Orwell had been not only a rat, but a fascist at heart. In Why Orwell Matters , Christopher Hitchens rejected such claims, saying that Orwell was an adamant anti-Stalinist and hated totalitarianism in any form. (The controversy was covered in some detail by John Strausbaugh in these pages last year.)

NOTE: The discussion can also be followed at Metaxucafe . Previous installments: Part One (Max), Part Two (Carolyn) and Part Three (Megan).] The New Chums of Chance, aided by associative penchant and a perfervid desire to ferret out reference, continued their journey, hitting beyond Part One and, with Colonel Bud Parr beginning to see references to the Bible and Eliot, settling into the firm fields of Part Two: “But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God” (Romans 2:5) My reading of Part 1, “The Light Over the Ranges,” and early Part 2, “Iceland Spar,” has me coming back to the idea of faith in all of its manifestations. Faith in the Old Testament sense of an apocalyptic fear; Faith in anarchism, Faith in science and technology; magic and pagan rituals and of course Faith in money and materialism, particularly as the book opens on the 1893 World’s Fair, which, as one commentator on that event said, was a dry run for America’s “consumer based society.” Each of these manifestations appear to be represented by a major character. When the anarchist Webb Traverse shrugs and says “Sufficient unto the day” on page 96 he echoes Saint Matthew (6:34):

Heroes of Cyberspace: Thomas Pynchon
by Charles A. Gimon
for INFO NATION Published November 1996 Cyberspace, however you define it, is something that most people think of as an artifact of the 1990s. Yet the mental constructs of what we call "cyberspace" have deep, deep roots, and there have been many thinkers over the last 30 (or 300 or 3000) years who have contributed to the style and substance of the new culture long before computing found it way into the public eye. Among these founding thinkers is Thomas Pynchon. Yes, that Thomas Pynchon, the most famous non-person in America. The greatest American writer of the second half of the 20th century. Frequent non-guest on "The John Larroquette Show" . The only celebrity today for whom an 8-by-10 glossy cannot be had at any price. Pynchon's works have been influential for many of today's digital elite, and obscure references to his work are scattered through web pages and Usenet .sigs around the world. Pynchon's overarching themes reflect the American psyche, and even in the 1960s he foresaw the oddnesses and enormities of our end-of-the-century Internet. What little we know of Pynchon's life suggests experiences that while common enough, would be shared with many of the builders of today's world of computers and networking. He seems to have gravitated toward late-50s bohemianism while at Cornell, spent time hanging around Greenwich Village, and may have dabbled in drugs during the 60s. On the other hand, he did a stint in the Navy and worked as a tech writer at Boeing in Seattle, perhaps making him more Dilbert than
