Abstract
Women's fiction, poetry, drama and non-fiction represent the complex nexus of continuity and change in the British consciousness following the Second World War. These essays restore the cultural and literary significance of women as readers and writers, examining their various transmutations of international, national and domestic politics. The women-centred writing illuminated in this collection also enhances the tradition-in-process of twentieth-century women's literature. Writers discussed include Iris Murdoch, Doris Lessing, Muriel Spark, Agatha Christie and Stevie Smith. • UK The Literator Friday, 29 June 2007 Barbara Pym, whose novels are admired by such diverse figures as Alan Bennett, Jilly Cooper and Anne Tyler, is to be relaunched in Virago Modern Classics later this year. First published in 1952 by Cape, with Excellent Women, she was famously dropped by hipper-than-thou Tom Maschler in the mid-Sixties and remained unpublished for more than a decade, when Philip Larkin's acclamation led to a contract with Macmillan. Her first book with them, Quartet in Autumn, won the Booker. After her death in 1980, three posthumous novels enjoyed success, but since her work has again slipped out of print. Virago's Jill Foulston is "absolutely charmed" by the Shropshire-born Pym and has commissioned introductions from the likes of Cooper and Alexander McCall Smith, who calls her "a modern Jane Austen". The news from Ebury Press is less uplifting. Former Atomic Kitten Kerry Katona, whose autobiography sold well for Ebury, has been signed up to a three-book deal and will be launched as "a major fiction brand" in the footsteps of rival Jordan. They will be "gritty, real books for real people". Tough Love, her fiction debut, will apparently be "a fantastic blend of Footballers' Wives and Shameless".

Virtual Marginalia
Book title: Crampton Hodnet
Author: Barbara Pym
Posted October 12, 2001
Crampton Hodnet is one of Pym's earliest novels, although it remained unpublished until late in her career. It introduces the characters of Miss Doggett and Jessie Morrow. The novel is set in Oxford and follows the romantic asignations of several members of the small university-related community: a don who is dallying with a student (in a particularly absent-minded professor kind of way), the don's daughter, and a new curate who is young and unmarried. All the characters are shaped by their internal worlds, and all remain true to them. And, in the end, they all get what they deserve (both good and bad). Pym's psychological insight into her characters is masterful. The book is laugh-out-loud funny and is a pure indulgence. Pym is a master of portraying hidden flirtations and surpressed emotions. But this is no mere romance novel. Pym is an excellent observer of human nature, and not all the couples in the book are happy at the end. Here's a taste of Pym's prose (from p. 31):

More Information Barbara Pym, born 1913 and died 1980, was an English novelist whose work was firmly set in her home country, villages and churches etc, quintessentially English. The UK editions precede their US counterparts in all cases. The American catalogue is somewhat chaotic with book being issued out of sequence. All of the Cape 1st editions are of value and sought after by collectors, naturally condition and presence of dust jacket is critical. The Macmillan editions are relatively common so worth a great deal less, as are all the US editions.

Barbara Pym's Excellent Women
Excellent Women
This is a wonderfully British book, and the more I think about it now, the more I like it. It is subtle and charming, a great book to read with tea and a biscuit. A book very clearly from a different generation, but, as with all great and timeless books, there is much to be learned about human relations from it.

Barbara Pyre Society, 115 pages, 7.50 [pounds sterling] Although No Soft Incense, the title of this collection of essays put together by the Barbara Pyre Society (it is available on the Society's website at www.barbara-pym.org), is not in fact the title of one of Barbara Pym's eleven novels, it mimics her penchant for picking up phrases from obscurish English poems: Some Tame Gazelle (Thomas Haynes Bayly), A Glass of Blessings ("The Pulley," Herbert), The Sweet ...
