Pym was born in Oswestry Shropshire . After studying English at St Hilda's College, Oxford , she served in the Women's Royal Naval Service during World War II . Her literary career is noteworthy because of the long hiatus between and , when, despite early success and continuing popularity, she was unable to find a publisher for her richly comic novels. The turning point for Pym came with a famous article in the Times Literary Supplement in which two prominent names, Lord David Cecil and Philip Larkin , nominated her as the most underrated writer of the century. Pym and Larkin had kept up a private correspondence over a period of many years. Her comeback novel, Quartet in Autumn , was nominated for the Booker Prize . Another novel, The Sweet Dove Died , previously rejected by many publishers, was subsequently published to critical acclaim, and several of her previously unpublished novels were published after her death. Pym worked at the African Institute in London for some years, and played a large part in the editing of its scholarly journal

Right?

INTRODUCTION Barbara Pym’s Excellent Women The Napiers’ marriage is on the rocks, due to Helena’s fierce dedication to her anthropological fieldwork and to dashing Rockingham’s effortless romancing of every woman he encounters. As their go-between and confidant, Mildred suddenly finds herself swept into their milieu of romantic drama and self-important science. Two love triangles develop: between the Napiers and Everard Bone, and between Allegra Gray, Julian Malory, and, to her surprise, Mildred herself. Even as she expresses her intent to preserve her independence, a number of potential suitors present themselves. The more Mildred tries to extricate herself, the more involved she becomes, as each of her friends depends on her to sort out the unflattering messes they make for themselves. Yet behind her plain and patient facade, capable Mildred turns out to be a more ruthless social observer than even the anthropologists whose job it is to “study man.”

Barbara Mary Crampton Pym was born in Oswestry, Shropshire, the 2nd of June 1913, from Frederic Crampton Pym, solicitor, and Irena Spenser Thomas. She studied at the Huyton College, in Liverpool, and readed English at the St. Hilda's College in Oxford (B.A. "with honors"). During II World War she worked for Censorship (as Mildred does in Excellent Women ) then served in the Women's Royal Naval Service, in Britain and in Naples. From 1946 to 1974 she worked at the International African Institute where she was assistant editor of the anthropological journal Africa Her first novel, Some Tame Gazelle , was published in 1950, followed by five more books. In 1963 the new chief editor of her publisher rejected An Unsuitable Attachment , because, as he wrote, "in present conditions we could not sell a sufficient number of copies to cover costs". In 1969 she sent The Sweet Dove Died , written in 1968, to many publishers, with no success. Discouraged, she stopped writing.

Profile
Novelist; born at 72 Willow Street, Oswestry the daughter of a solicitor and educated at Liverpool College, Huyton and St. Hilda's College, Oxford where she read English. She spent most of her childhood at Morda Lodge, a large Edwardian house on the outskirts of Oswestry, which was to remain the Pym family home for many years. Barbara was brought up in a family where the Church played a major part; her mother was assistant organist at the parish church of St. Oswald, her father sang in the choir and there was a longstanding family tradition of having curates home for supper on a Sunday. Both parents were keen members of Oswestry Operatic Society in the 1920's. Barbara's first real creative work (she had been encouraged to write by her mother) was an operetta called The magic diamond performed by family and friends at Morda Lodge in April 1922. She was writing throughout the 1930's and, indeed, was working on her first novel Some tame gazelle from 1935 onwards although it was not published until 1950. During the war she joined the W.R.N.S. and after worked for the International African Institute, living with her sister in London. In more recent years and up to the time of her death she was living in a country cottage in Oxfordshire.

A regiment of women, some excellent, some annoying
January 14, 2007 This is the new year's first column, and though I don't like to think of what 2007 holds in store for us, I do like to think of what it marks. It is, for instance, the tercentenary of Henry Fielding's birth and bicentenary of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's . What is more, both Daphne du Maurier and W. H. Auden would be 100 this year had they stuck around. But closest at hand, only a week from today, is the 30th anniversary of the resurrection of Barbara Pym's literary career, and in my book that's big. In the Times Literary Supplement of Jan. 21, 1977, both Philip Larkin and Lord David Cecil named Pym "the most underrated novelist of the century," and suddenly her published novels were back in print, and those that had been rejected by countless publishers were accepted and greeted with praise. My own library of these novels is in dreadful repair acid-burned, crumbling, and pilfered so I was happy to see that "Excellent Women" (first published 55 years ago, speaking of anniversaries) has just reappeared in a Penguin Classics edition, with an introduction by A. N. Wilson (paperback, $14). Set in dismal, straitened, postwar London, it is narrated by Mildred Lathbury, the daughter of a clergyman and his wife, both deceased. She is in her early 30s and works part time for "an organisation which helped impoverished gentlewomen, a cause very near to my own heart, as I felt that I was just the kind of person who might one day become one." She is a helping presence in the nearby church and lives in a flat with a bathroom shared by downstairs tenants .
