Mario Puzo (1920-1999) American novelist, best-known for his Godfather saga . The novel stayed on The New York Times ' best-seller list for sixty-seven weeks. Puzo's book had a deep impact on American society through its film adaptation, and the saying "I'll make him an offer he can't refuse" has became a cliché. However, Puzo always claimed that he had never met a gangster in his life before the book appeared. "Don Vito Corleone was a man to whom everybody came for help, and never were they disappointed. He made no empty promises, nor the craven excuse that his hands were tied by more powerful forces in the world than himself. It was not necessary that he be your friend, it was not even important that you had no means with which to repay him. Only one thing was required. That you, you yourself, proclaim your friendship. And then, now matter how poor or powerless the supplicant, Don Corleone would take that man's troubles to his heart. And he would let nothing stand in the way to a solution of that man's woe. His reward? Friendship, the respectful title of "Don," and sometimes the more affectionate salutation of "Godfather." Mario Puzo was born into an immigrant family in New York City in the area known as 'Hell's Kitchen'. His father was a railway trackman. Puzo lived with his six brothers and sisters above the railway yards. The discovery of public libraries and the world of literature led Puzo in the direction of writing. During World War II Puzo served in the US Air Force stationed in East Asia and Germany. After the war he stayed in Germany as a civilian public relations man for the Air Force. Puzo then studied at the New School for Social Research, New York, and at Columbia University. During this period he took classes in literature and creative writing. In 1946 he married Erika Broske; they had five children. His first published story, 'The Last Christmans', appeared in

By Albert Mobilio July 9, 1999 O ne of the New York tabloids caught the near biblical-sounding line of succession: "The Father of the Godfather Dead at 78." Mario Puzo may have written a half-dozen other novels and several screenplays, but his 1969 novel "The Godfather" and its film adaptation, which he co-wrote with Francis Ford Coppola, are the works for which he will be long remembered. After initial publication and for many years afterward, "The Godfather's" familiar black cover with its depiction of a puppeteer's hand was ubiquitous the novel sold 21 million copies before the film version appeared. The film, too, was an unprecedented success it broke box-office records and won several Academy Awards.

For Mario Puzo, a spectacular return to the Mafia world he knows so well
    Interview by Robert Fleming
The 26 years since the blockbuster publication of The Godfather have done very little to dampen the American reading public's insatiable appetite for the fictional mob world of Mario Puzo. What has Puzo been doing all this time? "I've been around," the 75-year-old author says from his Long Island home. "I wanted to write other books, do some screenplays, get in some time living. Unlike some other authors, it takes me five years to write a book, instead of the usual two years that most authors take." With the release of The Last Don , Puzo hopes to regain some of the momentum lost in his career due to the lackluster sales of his 1991 novel, The Fourth K , a superbly written political morality tale concerning a charismatic President seduced by the lure of power. The novel received so-so notices, generated some talk, but flopped.

BAY SHORE, New York (CNN) The author who kept pulling readers into the underbelly of the mob with his "Godfather" trilogy has died. Mario Puzo died Friday of an apparent heart failure at his home in Bay Shore, Long Island, according to his literary agent. Puzo was 78. Puzo was born October 15, 1920, in Hell's Kitchen on Manhattan's West Side, the son of Italian immigrants. After serving in World War II, he began writing fiction and nonfiction for men's magazines. He wanted to move on to bigger things, and in 1955 he published his first novel, "The Dark Arena," based on his World War II experiences in Europe. The next book, "The Fortunate Pilgrim," was an autobiographical piece about the Italian immigrant experience. Although Puzo considered it to be his finest work, it failed to reach many readers. This angered Puzo, so he took a different tactic. After receiving a $5 million advance from Putnam, he wrote about a different immigrant experience: It focused on the Corleone family, Sicilians who came to the United States and plunged into the world of organized crime. He titled it "The Godfather."

Sunday, October 16th, 2005 By Tim By Michael Callahan See, nine years ago I was assigned by an airline magazine to do a telephone interview with Puzo. I set up the time with his agent and, on the appointed afternoon, dialed him at his house in Long Island. We chatted for about an hour. As is the case with most celebrity interviews, it was painless and rather pointless. I did call back (1:43 PM) to clear up some stuff, and this time we had a more conversational chat. I could tell he was doing something as we talked, so I asked him what he was up to. Making a sandwich, he said. Don Corleone could not have said it any better.
