Aleksandr Pushkin
Aleksandr Sergeyevich Pushkin (Russian: Алекса́ндр Серге́евич Пу́шкин ) ( – ) was a Russian Romantic author whom many consider the greatest Russian poet and the founder of modern Russian literature. Pushkin pioneered the use of vernacular speech in his poems and plays, creating a style of storytelling—mixing drama, romance, and satire—associated with Russian literature ever since and greatly influencing later Russian writers.

    Russian playwright, poet, and essayist.
    INTRODUCTION
One of Russia's most intelligent and highly educated aristocrats in the early nineteenth century, Griboedov was an accomplished playwright best known for Gore ot uma Woe from Wit ), which many critics consider the greatest comedy in Russian literary history. The play quickly transcended critical favor and became part of the cultural fabric of the country. Fellow Russian writer Ivan Goncharov described the phenomenon: “Immediately grasping its beauty, and not finding any faults in it, the literate masses wore the manuscript down to tatters, to verses, to hemistiches; they distributed all its pith and wisdom into colloquial speech; they turned a million into kopecks.”
    Biographical Information
Although there is a great deal of contradictory information regarding the date of Griboedov's birth, many sources maintain that he was born on January 4, 1795—others place his birth as early as 1790. His father, Sergei Ivanovich Griboedov, lived apart from his family and had little contact with his son. Griboedov was raised by his mother, Nastas'ia Fedorovna Griboedova, who saw to it that her son received a first-rate education. Griboedov entered the Moscow University Preparatory School for Nobles in 1803, receiving a literature degree in 1808 and a law degree in 1810. He began writing poetry while still a student, and one of his poems was published in the Moscow journal

    Aleksandr Sergeevich Pushkin
The Russian poet and prose writer Aleksandr Sergeevich Pushkin (1799-1837) ranks as the country's greatest poet. He not only brought Russian poetry to its highest excellence but also had a decisive influence on Russian literature in the 19th and 20th centuries.
Aleksandr Pushkin is Russia's national poet. He established the norms of classical Russian versification, and he laid the groundwork for much of the development of Russian prose in the 19th century. His work is distinguished by brilliance of language, compactness, terseness, and objectivity. His poetry is supremely untranslatable, and consequently Pushkin has had less influence on world literature than on Russian literature. He may be described as a romantic in subject matter and a classicist in style and form.

    Study Notes
The Golden Age of Russian Poetry
The period from 1820 to about 1835 is known as the "Golden Age" of Russian poetry. During this time poetry dominated literary art, and a large number of very good poets were offering their works to the public. One of your textbooks, Mirsky's History ofRussian Literature , contains factual and evaluative material on such poets as Zhukovsky, Baratynsky, Batiushkov, Davydov, Vyazemsky, and Delvig. The works of these writers provided the period with poetic depth and breadth; however, each of them knew and acknowledged the genius of the greatest poet of the periodAleksandr Pushkin. Still today, Pushkin is as revered by Russians as Shakespeare is by speakers of English.
Aleksandr Pushkin (1799-1837) Aleksandr Sergeevich Pushkin was born on May 26, 1799, in Moscow. His father's family traced its lineage back seven hundred years, to the historical beginnings ofthe Russian state. The Pushkin family had a history of being at odds with the established authority. Aleksandr Pushkin shared that fate, both as a writer and in his personal life. His mother's family wThe Life of Aleksandr Pushkin (1799-1837)as descended from an Ethiopian prince named IbrahimHannibal. Prince Hannibal had come to Russia during the reign of Peter the Great, and in due course he became an important general in the Russian army. So outstanding was his service to the state that Tsar Peter conferred nobility on Hannibal and his descendants. From a social point of view, Pushkin's descent made him a combination of the "old" nobility of family and the "new" nobility, created by Peter the Great, of service to the state.

died Feb. 10, 1837, St. Petersburg
Russian writer. Born into an aristocratic family, Pushkin began his literary career while still a student at the Imperial Lyceum at Tsarskoye Selo (later renamed Pushkin). His first major work was the romantic poem Ruslan and Ludmila (1820). With his political verses and epigrams, he became associated with a revolutionary movement that culminated in the unsuccessful Decembrist revolt of 1825. Banished to several provincial locations, he produced a cycle of romantic narrative poems that confirmed him as the leading Russian poet of the day and the leader of the Romantic generation of the 1820s. He also worked on his important historical tragedy
