A moral "Compass"
Far from exposing children to "the demonic," as some Catholics claim, "The Golden Compass" celebrates independent thinking. As a Catholic, I hope my daughter will see it. By Mary Elizabeth Williams

Photos: New Line/Reuters A Salon photo composite of "The Golden Compass" and the Catholic League's Bill Donohue. This Sunday morning, I will take my eldest daughter, Lucy, nearly 8, to Mass at our church down the street, as I do every week. Afterward, I will drop her off at Sunday school for First Communion preparation. Then, if she desires, I'll take her to see a movie the Catholic League is urging me to boycott, a film based on a series of books the League claims was "written to promote atheism and denigrate Christianity, especially Roman Catholicism." The run-up to New Line's lavish adaptation of Philip Pullman's "The Golden Compass" has been marked by indignant protest from Christian quarters. The film is based on the first of Pullman's wildly successful, Whitbread and Carnegie award-winning trilogy, a series that makes generous and undeniably negative use of Catholic imagery: In

Filed in World History Prose A-Featured A-Editor's Picks ... Philip Pullman , best known as the author of The Golden Compass , which is in theaters Paradise Los t Four hundred years after the birth of John Milton, he still lives, his example still inspires, his words still echo. Paradise Lost is played on the stage, is sung to music, is choreographed for a ballet; it is an audiobook, it is the subject of countless theses and dissertations, and on the very morning that I’m writing this, an invitation arrives to the private view of an exhibition of paintings and prints called The Fall of the Rebel Angels , whose iconography is unmistakable. Paradise Lost is the great central work, of course, but Milton’s life was far more than Paradise Lost . It’s important to remember how politically engaged his life was – engaged to the point of considerable personal danger: after the Restoration in 1660 he was arrested and imprisoned, and might easily have fared much worse. But he never abjured his republicanism, despite the changed temper of the times, despite the re-introduction of censorship and the persecution of authors and printers known to have supported the republican cause. He was not without his supporters. When his books were ordered to be burnt, the Bodleian Library in Oxford managed to conceal their copies of such inflammatory pamphlets as

Philip Pullman's childish atheism
I've been receiving some e-mails in recent weeks asking about Philip Pullman, his best-selling trilogy, "His Dark Materials," and the soon-to-be released cinematic rendition of the first book, The Golden Compass . For the record, I've not yet read the trilogy—just parts of the first book. But I have read numerous interviews with Pullman, as well as some of his non-fiction essays; I did so in researching a piece for Catholic World Report, a companion article to a review of the books written by Sandra Miesel, who has read the trilogy, much to her disgust (one of her descriptives is, simply, "Repulsive!"). The articles will appear in the December issue of CWR subscribe now! ) Sandra and Pete Vere, who has written several pieces about Pullman and the trilogy, are working on what they hope will be 40 to 50 page pamphlet about the books. More on that in the near future, as information is available. Here is a short clip from Sandra's article on the trilogy: Despite his public avowals of atheism, Pullman was shrewd enough to maintain deniability. After all, the Authority is not actually God and the children do not mean to destroy him. One minor character admits that the existence of a real Creator is unknown. The Magisterium has the trappings of Catholicism, down to its Cardinals’ red robes and the Swiss Guard. But its actual teachings are barely glimpsed, beyond obsessions over sex and the suppression of scientific theories as heresy.

What Catholics attacking 'The Golden Compass' are really afraid of
Christian groups worry that "The Golden Compass," starring Dakota Blue Richards (above), is designed to turn children against religion. (New Line Cinema) Email Print Text size By Donna Freitas November 25, 2007 ON DEC. 7 New Line Cinema will release "The Golden Compass," starring Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig, the first movie in a trilogy with the massive budget and family blockbuster potential of "The Lord of the Rings." Yet, even before it opens, "The Golden Compass" finds itself at the center of a controversy. The Catholic League, a conservative religious organization, launched a campaign on Oct. 9 calling on all Catholics to boycott the film. The group also published a lengthy pamphlet attacking the story and distributed the pamphlet to Catholic schools across the country. Other groups have joined the fray, including the evangelical nonprofit Focus on the Family, whose magazine Plugged In urged parents to keep kids out of theaters showing the film. And the Christian blogosphere is alive with warnings not only about the movie trilogy, but also about the series of books it is based on. Bill Donohue, president of the Catholic League, charges that the books, known as the "His Dark Materials" trilogy, are deeply anti-Christian. Donohue says he fears that the film will inspire parents to purchase "His Dark Materials" for their fantasy-hungry kids on Christmas, unaware that the third book of the series, "The Amber Spyglass," climaxes in an epic battle to destroy God. Some of the book's villains are referred to as the Magisterium - a term used to refer to the Catholic hierarchy. The British author, Philip Pullman, has said openly that he is an atheist, and Donohue charges that his books are designed to eradicate faith among children.

    Who is Philip Pullman?
ad_unit_target='mainAdUnit'; X Close this window Philip Pullman, born in England in 1946, is a British scholar and author, well known for writing the controversial trilogy His Dark Materials . While Pullman's novels are ostensibly for children, they have drawn adult attention, particularly His Dark Materials , because the books deal with many adult themes and issues. Philip Pullman was born in Norwich, England, and his father was a Royal Air Force pilot. Philip and his mother moved with his father's postings until his father's death in 1953. Many of Pullman's books deal with the themes of orphaned or fatherless children and family relations. His mother remarried and moved the family to Australia, where Philip Pullman was first exposed to comic books and fantasy literature. In 1963, Philip Pullman attended Exeter College, Oxford, and after graduating, he married Judith Speller and began teaching children. Pullman also wrote school plays and published several books and collections of plays, beginning in 1972 with the publication of The Haunted Storm , which won the New English Library's Young Writers Award. Many of his books are set in the Victorian and Edwardian eras, indicating an interest in the social, political, and economic structures of that period.

Phillip Pullman is the best-selling author of the His Dark Materials trilogy of fantasy novels, and a number of other books, loved both by children and adults alike. The first volume of the trilogy, Northern Lights , won the Carnegie Medal for children’s fiction in the UK in 1995 and the last volume, The Amber Spyglass , was awarded the Whitbread Book of the Year prize in 2002. His Dark Materials are controversial, especially with fundamentalist Christian groups who believe that Pullman is actively pursuing an anti-Christian agenda. The Archbishop of Canterbury, meanwhile, proposed that His Dark Materials be taught as part of religious education in schools. “The theocratic cast of mind is always reductive, whether it’s in power or not.”
