'His Dark Materials' Writer Philip Pullman Takes 'Narnia,' 'Lord Of The Rings' To Task

Fantasy author (whose 'Golden Compass' was made into a December flick starring Nicole Kidman) knocks 'Narnia' ending, calls 'LOTR' 'trivial.'
By Jennifer Vineyard NEW YORK We don't normally think of classic fantasy series as being pit against one another, because despite their differences, they have so much in common. Most of them are about little people (be they children or Hobbits) caught up in a war of good versus evil that requires a singular sacrifice to save the world, often with a bit of biblical allegory thrown in for good measure. But even if "Harry Potter," "The Lord of the Rings," "The Chronicles of Narnia" and "His Dark Materials" were all put on the same bookshelf, they're not all friends, as "Materials" author Philip Pullman explained during his Times Talks appearance Tuesday. Pullman's series is often referred to as the anti-"Narnia," shorthand for saying they're on opposite sides of the theological fence. (A film version of the first installment of "His Dark Materials," "The Golden Compass," is about to hit theaters December 7 and stars Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig.) In "Narnia," more so than in "LOTR," Christianity is at the forefront, with the story of the crucifixion and resurrection retold with Aslan in "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe." Even Harry Potter has his fair share of the resurrection tale (see

The Golden Compass
The Subtle Knife The Amber Spyglass Further Stories ... Site Main
When The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman was published in 1995, it was the start of His Dark Materials , an ambitious trilogy that offered a startlingly new perspective on childhood, innocence, and sin. On the surface, the series relates the story of two children on a fantastic voyage, encountering an intriguing blend of complicated characters and twisted landscapes as they make their way toward an uncertain goal. Beneath the exterior, however, lie murky questions of morality and existence, changing an enjoyable children's series into a thought-provoking view on maturity. The diegesis of His Dark Materials is still expanding: at least two more books ( Lyra's Oxford and The Book of Dust ) concerning the characters and universes of His Dark Materials are slated to be published, and the trilogy has already been adapted into a successful radio drama. A theatrical play is scheduled for the end of 2003, and a set of major motion pictures is in the works. This site exists as a humble tribute to the series, its offspring, and the influences that shaped it.

Why are we marking the centenary of CS Lewis's birth with parties and competitions? His books were reactionary and dishonest, says Philip Pullman The centenary of C S Lewis's birth on November 29 is being celebrated with all manner of hoopla, much of it connected in one way or another with the Narnia books. There will be an adaptation of The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe presented by the Royal Shakespeare Company, a 100th birthday party at the toy shop Hamleys, a competition for children to draw greetings cards based on the Narnia stories, and fresh editions of the seven books, with newly coloured illustrations. As if that wasn't enough, The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe was recently named their favourite story by such celebrities as Geri Halliwell, Liam Gallagher and Peter Mandelson, and the same book starred in a recent range of pictorial stamps.

Philip Pullman the extended e-mail interview
However much I might disagree with Philip Pullman's beliefs and his characterization of Christianity in the His Dark Materials trilogy, it must be said that Pullman very graciously agreed to exchange several e-mails with me back in September, for my article on The Golden Compass that appears in the current issue of Christianity Today
Only a fraction of this "interview" ended up in the article itself, but a lot of what he said was quite interesting, so I figured I'd post a longer, and slightly edited, version of it here. ("Slightly edited" here means that I have moved a few bits around, and inserted one or two follow-up questions and answers into the middle of a previous answer; plus I have deleted the usual "hi how are you" sort of pleasantries.)
As you can see, I had no idea how quickly he would respond, or how much opportunity there would be for follow-up questions, so I tended to bunch the questions up somewhat and there wasn't time for some of the follow-up questions that I might have wanted to ask. Maybe one day we'll have a voice-to-voice conversation, but for now, this will do!

By Susan Roberts Writer Philip Pullman's books are selling in their millions. The Amber Spyglass, the third book in the His Dark Materials trilogy, has won the prestigious Whitbread Prize. Some people have accused Pullman of nurturing a dark agenda and an anti-Christian purpose. He was recently described in The Mail on Sunday as the most dangerous author in Britain. Susan Roberts talked to Philip Pullman about God, the church and the meaning of life.

Somewhere in England a cowboy and a witch are flirting on a balloon. "It's a flying boat," clarifies Sam Elliott, the weather-beaten character actor who plays Texas aeronaut Lee Scoresby. Indeed, the airship looks like a dinghy held aloft by multiple balloons, a visual detail not mentioned in The Golden Compass , the first book in the wildly popular His Dark Materials trilogy by Philip Pullman.

How we work: Philip Pullman, author
Pullman was well-known for writing in a shed, to a rigorous 3-pages-daily quota. For instance, from this 1998 interview: I sit down to write by hand, in ballpoint, on A4 narrow lined paper, after breakfast, and work through till lunch with a break for coffee and reading mail. Then I have lunch and watch Neighbours (invaluable). In the afternoon I read or take the dog for a walk or do something physically constructive (this summer I made a clavichord with my 16-year-old son – a delightful business for all sorts of reasons). In the evening I finish the three pages which is my daily task , or if I finished them in the morning, I do whatever journalism or reviewing or lecture-planning I have in hand. I spend Sundays answering letters; it takes me all day. The shed is part of - rather than being merely the location of - the writing ritual: It's quite comfortable in there, but because of my superstition about not tidying it during the course of a book , it's now an abominable tip. I write by hand, using a ballpoint pen on narrow lined A4 paper (with two holes, not four). I sit at a table covered with an old kilim rug, on a vastly expensive Danish orthopaedic chair, which has made a lot of difference to my back. The table is raised on wooden blocks so it's a bit higher than normal.
