by Rod Mengham and John Kinsella
This piece first appeared in the Bloodaxe Books catalogue advertising the Collected Poems of J.H.Prynne (1999), and on John Kinsella's Internet homepage. Jacket thanks Bloodaxe Books and John Kinsella for permission to reprint.
Long respected as a teacher at Cambridge University and librarian at Gonville and Caius College, J.H. Prynne is possibly the most significant English poet of the late twentieth century. A lyrical experimentalist, his work has mesmerised and attracted readers from around the world for three decades. It has brought some to Cambridge in pursuit of new and unread texts, it has inspired students to develop their own ways of investigating the processes of poetry, to question the prescribed ways of reading, and led translators such as the late and brilliant Bernard Dubourg to dedicate themselves to exploring the nuances and variations in language and potentials of "meaning" that lie in its structures.
Nearly Too Much (Liverpool University Press, 1995), write of the 'indeterminacy' and the 'avoidance of totality and closure' in Prynne's poetry and we might cite this as reason for the poet's rejection of his earlier, more "traditional"/linear material (not included in Poems).

An Introduction to the Poetry of J.H. Prynne by Rod Mengham and John Kinsella Long respected as a teacher at Cambridge University and librarian at Gonville and Caius College, J.H. Prynne is possibly the most significant English poet of the late twentieth century. A lyrical experimentalist, his work has mesmerised and attracted readers from around the world for three decades. Prynne's is a unique poetry. While being of a tradition that stretches back through Wordsworth, it is linguistically innovative and strongly in?uenced by poetic languages outside the traditional English poem - be they those of Ed Dorn or Charles Olson, contemporary Chinese poetry, or the theories of Martin Heidegger. Prynne's work is often referred to in semi-mystical terms as a result of its being difficult to get hold of. As Prynne has avoided mainstream publishing it has been assumed that he rejects the "general" readership, that his is a language of an informed and "alternative" clique. But it is the indifference of the mainstream publisher to "the work" itself that has been a problem for Prynne, and not the idea of availability. Actually, quite to the contrary, the affordable volume that can be read by anyone with an interest in what is going on in the poem would appeal to Prynne. What Prynne would reject is the easy path to comprehension.

Since I have spent more time with the work of J.H. Prynne, I am forced to revise my statement from an earlier post on ambiguity in Marvell and Prynne The
mower works now, related to nothing
but the hand and purpose, the fear of
collapse is pumped round by each linked
From Marvell: For Death thou art a Mower too.
Or the life to come, what I hear is the murmur
Of underground streams, what I see is a limestone landscape. For Prynne the landscape forms the basis of our condition: We are rocked
in this hollow, in the ladle by which
the sky, less cloudy now, rests on our
foreheads. The glacier itself is often a symbol in Auden of the power of nature, something I am sure Prynne would have been conscious of - think of the lines from As I Walked Out One Evening:
The desert sighs in the bed And the crack in the tea-cup opens Small flares skip down the coal face how can I refuse them the warm indolence J.H. Prynne, Sun Set 4.56

NEW! Review of J.H. Prynne
Furtherance by J. H. Prynne. The Figures, $14.
Reviewed by David Shepard
To proclaim J.H. Prynne the “most important poet of the 20th century” may not have been Randall Stevenson’s intent, but the subsequent furor over the misunderstanding of his words demonstrated Prynne’s significance. Given the century’s variety of poetic activity, it is unreasonable to select one poet as its best, but the scope of Prynne’s latest book, Furtherance , suggests he might at least claim to exemplify the period. In this intriguing collection of his last four published poems“Red D Gypsum,” “Pearls that Were,” “Triodes,” and “Unanswering Rational Shore”he employs postmodern techniques and ideas in a Modernist poetic project to depict the twentieth century in the structure and sense of his poems.
We can therefore read Prynne’s use of complex vocabulary as an attempt to recoup F.R. Leavis’s organic community and recombine a language fragmented into technical jargons. He reclaims this language for poetry and causes readers to incorporate these words into their vocabulary. This moves language closer to the organic whole Leavis believed permanently lost: by incorporating terms from each discourse, Prynne returns this knowledge to the public sphere from its sequestration in the ivory tower. At the same time, it also gives his poems the flavor of a modernist nostalgia for lost wholes rather than a postmodern acceptance of fragmentation.

Response to Futures by Ken Edwards
J. H. Prynne
Dear Ken, Here is a letter right out of the blue, for you as it will arrive and for me also as I come to be writing it, snatching in usual form my stolen moments from the over and over disturbances of earning a life. The thing comes about because by the most perfect accident my eyes fell upon your novel, Futures, which has I suppose been on the premises here for some while but which, I have to confess, I never exactly noticed before now. It took another accident of very advanced proportions to start me reading it; but from then on it has had my undivided and fully alert attention. Saluti: J 5th March 2000
